    Good Equipment

The equipment is good, basically flawless except on one point. On every device I have connected the hard drive, I have waited for the drivers to install before completing any task. However, once the time comes to disconnect the drive, I am unable to do so as it gives me an error message saying that the device is still in use. I have close every application via my device manager, the task bar, etc. Nothing is in use. So I end up having to disconnect the device without ejecting it first. Which scares me regarding file corruption. Other than that, I think the only other point that I would add to the review is that with the cost of this device, I would think that even a small case would come with it as it is not a 'heavy duty' case in itself.

I bought this item to back up a 4TB raid array I have. I bought a 4TB passport a year ago to hold full computer backups of all computers in the house. Why buy this to back up redundant disks? I back up to these 2 Passports each week, then disconnect them and place them in my Go bag. In case of fire, I grab the bag and go. I've got everything ready to restore to new equipment if needed. The Passport is very simple, is added to Windows as a mapped drive and any back up program can copy files as can drag and drop. Works like a charm and data tests good each quarter thus far - no bad backups. Just what I need them for. Highly recommended.

I like these small portable drives because they are small enough to take anywhere, have more than enough storage for most things, and they have low power requirements. I purchased this drive to store my movie collection on so I can take them with me when I travel. 4TB is more than enough for my collection plus music. The drive is fast, it uses USB3.0 so movies never lag, and copying to or from the drive is blazingly fast. It draws power through the USB cable so I didn't have to carry an extra power adapter. And, it fits in any backpack or briefcase computer bag. I prefer Western Digital drives because they are inexpensive and reliable. This one does not disappoint.

    Not intuitively obvious

I have several older models of Western Digital, and NEVER had any problems with any of them. With this new model, have had FITS on even trying to implement its "features". I forcibly just created a Folder and copied my data into it as backup. On older versions, the "Unlock.exe" was obvious and easy. With this new one, you WILL have to read the manual to figure out what to do. Why can't WD make it intuitively obvious, instead of needing to "install this, install that, do this, do that". I had to print out the manual of 40 pages and go over the manual as I installed WD. K.I.S.S. Why is it so difficult for vendors, software AND hardware, to figure this out??? Not that hard to figure out.

Tons of extra space for my xbox1

I was looking for some extra space for my 1tb xbox1 as every game has to be installed and they are usually huge (like 40gb+) and so it fills up fast. I wanted at least a 2 or 3gb drive and when I saw this 4gb for only $30 more than the 2gb it was a no brainer. I've always used WD for external storage and knew I couldn't go wrong especially after all the good reviews. I transferred most of the games I don't play frequently over to it to free up as much as possible on the internal drive and freed up almost 500gb. Data transfer speeds are great with USB 3.0 and I think I was getting about 180MB (not mbps) transfer rate. And I see zero difference from playinh games from this drive vs the internal one. I highly recommend this drive due to its size, speed and cost.

I have had this for about 9 months now and it is still working like a dream. The transfer speeds are okay via USB 3.0, and the size is small enough to throw in my bag. I use this to back up a few of my larger form factor external drives and it’s nice to have this tucked away on top of my desktop. The only con I have is the USB cable included is rather short and so placing the unit on top of my desktop impedes on one of my fans. It doesn’t prevent cooling significantly, but i wish I could have a bit more length in the cable

    Drive is good/Software not good

The drive itself is compact and a good drive. The colors are nice and bright. The software is faulty. When the WD software is installed on my computer the floppy drive spins continually. When the software is removed the floppy drive stops spinning. Someone else said that their card reader is continually accessing when the software is installed. The older software does not do this. But the older software does not recognize the newer drive. I contacted WD and they don't know. So I use the drive without the WD software. The latest software on the WD web site does the same thing. The software is the reason I gave it a 3 star, otherwise I would give it a 5 star.

    My files are gone

I bought this mypassport because I had too many files in my computer. I went to go use it one day and I was unable to access my files. I have now lost all my files which is two years of work. I call the company and they send me the info for data recovery which cost almost $1000. So they sell me something faulty and I'm the one who has to pay to have the data recovered. They should be the one paying for my lost data. Now I am losing money from the lost files. I only had it a few months before it stopped working I am very unhappy with this purchase. Worst decision I ever mad when I bought this.

Having had this external drive operating off of my 1TB Dell computer now for about a month I'm pretty pleased with how it's performing. I won't give it 5 stars at this point since I have no idea of its durability. The one point I do notice is that periodically as I start up the computer I get a note from the Western Digital drive saying it didn't backup things fully or it had problem and didn't fully complete the back up. This is not every time so I gather that many of my backups, which are scheduled hourly, are fine. I will know more more the 1st time I have to recover something from the backup drive.

I have a bunch of games, many I never got to play because of the PS4's standard 500GB hdd, picked this up and have installed most of my collection, now I can play any game I like without having to worry about space. Also, the good thing about using an external over upgrading the PS4's hdd is that it won't leave a digital fingerprint on it preventing you from using it on another PS4. Say your console dies, or you want to take your games over to a friend's house, all you need to do is safely remove it and then sign in on your PSN account on that other console. It's as simple as that. The only down side is you can't back up your saves on it, you'll either have to save them to a thumb drive or the Cloud via PS+. Totally worth it though.

I have been using WD My Passport hard drives for years. Now they make 4 TB drives. I remember when the biggest was 500 GB. They have all worked without one ever failing. 4TB hold my entire collection of photos and all my music. I back the same data up onto another WD 4TB drive just so I know I will never loose this priceless data. All with the added safety of not being on some Cloud and encryption/password to keep my data safe. Best external hard drives on the market. Highly recommend.

Speeds top out at about 110MB/s. The size of the drive was larger and heavier than expected. Is not a deal breaker though. Comes with usb cable and has preloaded software on on the drive, but I did a format and trashed the bloated extras. Heat dispersion is comparable to the rest of similar drives and gets hot as expected. If you are looking for something more professional, consider custom enclosered hhd with heat dispersion as this will become hot during continuos use. The price per TB is hard to beat with this model. Affortable alternative to portable ssd's and transfer speeds are satisfactory. I wish a 8TB capacity drive was available, but this is the best 4TB you can get right now.

It offers a lot of storage. It has A good write rate. It offers a lot of storage. I don't like the software that unlocks the drive. I like that I can play media on 1 of my smart TVs but hate that it can't be read by my other smart TV. One of my lap tops will not write to drive even though I have installed the software that came with the drive. It worked once allowing me to write files to drive, however it never has since. On that computer. And now its locked on that computer. Because that's my primary computer this is extremely annoying.

I purchased this for an amazing price, I think it was on sale but even if not, the price is very reasonable. I picked this up to use as an extended storage for my Ps4 Pro, and it works amazingly. Just plug it in and the Ps4 formats it. Then BOOM, instead of 1 TB you have a little under 5 TBs. You can load your games onto it, and play the games directly off of the external HD. You don’t have to reupload the game onto your console before playing it. Loading speed for the Ps4 seems a few seconds faster as well. The upload sped for the HD seems fairly decent as well. Can’t beat the usability of this for the price. So far so good after almost a month of use.

I was looking for a portable drive to back up my family photos and videos. My library has grown over the years, and the need was there for a larger capacity drive that is portable and can easily be stored in a safe spot. I own 2 other WD drives and was happy with their performance. This time I decided on a smaller footprint with portability and found this 4TB drive. It connects for fast transfer rate via USB 3.0. It comes in several colors; I chose the black model since that was the one in stock. To protect the drive when not in use, I bought the hard shell case. It fits the drive nicely and has room for the cable and additional thumbdrives if needed.

The product is nice, Colors are great, matching color USB cords. I am not a huge fan of the USB3 micro fan as the connection is not sturdy and slight movement and it disconnects. (not the drives fault. The lower Rating is due to Failure after 7months of use. It is failing Quick Diagnostics and intermittently works. I have created a RMa. I like the fact that WD still offers Advance RMAs as you can clone or copy your drive if it is partially functional.

I purchased the WD - My Passport 4TB External USB 3.0 Portable Hard Drive and couldn't be happier. Photography is my hobby and I needed an external hard drive to store my photos for backup. I've lost photos with a computer crash in the past and don't ever want to lose photos again. I use OS so I had to reformat the hard drive but that was easy to do with the instructions provided. I would recommend this device to any one looking for a large capacity external hard drive. It's fast when looking for photos and compact. The price is right was looking at a smaller size but for $20 more and decided to purchase the 4TB, I'll have more than enough space.

I purchased this for my PS4 as an external drive. While it stores my games effectively, once connected the PS4 develops a lag in the game. Most likely this is due to the drive going to sleep or an overall slow USB connection between the PS4 and the drive. To get around that, I disconnect the drive when I'm not playing specific games. While not ideal, it works for me. The rating is not specifically on the drive. I have another one that I use between my PCs and it works great. This lower rating is specifically on the use case for the PS4.

I haven't been using it for very long but thus far, this external HD has worked great. I am using to hook up to an Xbox One X for extra game storage space. As soon as I hooked it up to the Xbox, the Xbox recognized it, did a quick format and I was off and running. I would however recommend the 2yr geek squad plan in case you ran into any issues. As I say, I have had none with this and expect to have none but I have been dealing with HD's for years and occasionally you might get one that goes bad well before you expect it to, just happens infrequently. I have had pretty good luck with Western Digital in the past.
