This is my third purchase of a My Passport External Hard drive. Third purchase, because I really like it and have gotten additional ones to use. I like that I don't need a power supply for this, and only need to plug it into my PC, laptop and/or Smart TV! Western Digital makes good dependable products. I've gotten Seagate before, and have had them go belly up on me, but the WD products have been reliable. I've recommended this external hard drive to my friends and family as it is a good small size, and better to have multiple backups than to lose your precious data. Also, this is the perfect size to take my videos on the go!

My backup drive for my Mac's was running out of space and I had quite a few Best Buy bonus points because of a large purchase so I looked to see what was available. This particular model was on sale so I went for it, knowing full well I'd have to reformat it (it came, of course, formatted for Windows.) I had a little trouble getting it reformatted -- no fault of the drive, just that some parts of OS X's disk utility were a little less intuitive than I'd expected. Sorry, I don't remember the particular sequence of steps needed to accomplish the task, suffice it to say it can be done with a little perseverance.

Although Cloud storage is good to have, It is still a very good idea to have a personal storage like this with you along with your laptop when you're about to go for vacation that you expect capturing a lot of photos or videos because some of the most beautiful parts of the US is also some of the worst places for digital communication including internet which cloud based storages relies on. I am very happy that this USB 3.0 compatible portable hard drive has shown me data transfers as high as 80 megabytes per second from my micro SD cards of my devices like phones and cameras...

The price on this drive at 119.99 was excellent. The drive is about as thick as 2 boxes of cards together and not much bigger than a deck of cards. I use it to store videos, and to backup the harddrives for my new laptop, my wifes laptop, and the desktop. The 3 of those took about 700gb. Now I have all kinds of room remaining to store other things. I actually plan to keep two backups for each device every couple of months I will overwrite an older one, Just in case the newest and greatest virus should hit, I'll be prepared. The price of the drive and remembering to get a backup is cheaper than buying a copy of windows

I have used WD My Passports in the past, and I feel comfortable in knowing that they are solid performers in saving my photos, etc. on an external hard drive. One important piece of advice I received years ago, after another company's external drive failed on me is: ALWAYS SAVE YOUR IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS TO TWO EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES. That way, if one fails, you've got a back up. I purchased two WD My passports (4TB) to replace the two I'd been using (2TB) that were running out of space. I'd purchased those older passports several years ago, and the new units (which doubled my storage capacity) cost about the same.

This HD is an excellent option for someone that needs to have their info available on the go. I travel all the time for work purposes and the portable drives are a great option, they don't take much space to store in my luggage, they don't require a power cord, you just plug to your PC with the USB cable and if you get them on sale is not that expensive. The WD passport comes with security added, you can password protect your drive.

I've been using WD drives for years now and haven't had one fail on me yet. Their products are tried and true, and able to withstand hard use such as when editing high quality video footage or rendering robust effects, layers at a time. I'm just hoping for a Thunderbolt version at this price point, but I imagine that fructifying years down the line. A man can dream can't he? Oh, and drive speeds are up to par as usual. I think even those this USB 3.0 is similar to the previous model from 2011, the speed may be perhaps incrementally faster, but I could be stretching it a bit.

I have many external hard drives and this WD model is not a good one. Might be an odd case of a defect but it started lagging from the first plug in for a live backup session and failed shortly on high end MSI machine running Windows 8.1. This drive has powering issues and it has been previously reported. It has indexing issues, issues with identification, startup and initialization leading to fatal errors and eventual crash. USB interface and address assignments fail, can't recognize, can't format, can't properly partition. I would not recommend this drive.

Performs as expected doesn't necessarily mean performs as I would prefer. Each manufacturer and each product has their pros and cons, and at some point, sacrifices have to be made in the selection process. After owning both Seagate and Western Digital portable hard drives for backup, my last four have been WD. The WD My Passport series have served the purpose for which they were purchased. In all fairness, I would have given my WD device a 5 star rating, but I'm waiting for a continous backup option. Although I have it setup to backup daily, it takes only 2 clicks to "Backup Now".

I've had this hard drive for about a month now. I know that's a short amount of time for reviewing a hard drive, but there's a reason why I buy Western Digital besides the value. I has this 500GB Western Digital external drive that I have had for a good 10 years, and that thing has been dropped several times, and it is still going... Anyhow, I got this one to use with my PS4 Pro, and it was quick and easy to set up. So if you are looking for a compatible drive for your PS4, you can definitely go with this one.

As a photographer I used to carry a 1TB HD all the time to immediately backup photos while on the road. I often found myself deleting old photos to make room for new ones. This 4TB drive alleviates that. My only gripe if you could call it that is it's heavier and bulkier than my old HD. Weight even the slightest amount is important to a photographer like me who carries all the gear whose total weight his or her back can sustain on hikes. But I can't deduct a star for that because it's probaly a limitation of physics. So just be aware there's a bit of capacity-vs-size/weight tradeoff.

I go through a lot of drives, as I use them for high res digital video files. I bought this as a last minute drive for on set as I was running out of space on my regularly used LaCie drives. This drive has been very reliable and at an above par speed when connected to a workhorse computer. I must say that I am pleasantly surprised by the quality of this product. I don't plan replacing my regularly used brand (LaCie), but I will start to sprinkle in a few of these among my lower cost jobs as the dollar to performance is very good.

Quiet; fast; unmounts on its own

In general, this is a quiet and fast drive. I use it to back up data on my iMac (currently running macOS Mojave). However, if I leave it connected for a day or so, it will un-gracefully unmount itself (this may be a driver issue or related to the WD app). Repeated instances of this can corrupt the directory. Thus, I have to remember to unmount it after I back up or restore data. Knowing that (and the workaround), I find the drive a decent value.

I bought 4 of these before I found one that was not defective, but once I did I have had no problems. I recommend if you are not going to use the software that comes with it to re-format the drive immediately. If you plug it in and it is clicking just take it back. This is the first sign of failure. I have 3 other My Passports (older models) and have had absolutely zero issues. Most reliable of the competition and good price.

Needed large capacity portable back-up for offsite archiving in case of disaster. The 4TB capacity was great as every accumulating family videos and photos exceeded prior 2 TB device. Data transfer went smoothly, but as expected given the amount of data, took a while. While USB 3.0 capable per specs, transfer speed limited by USB2.0 on computer. Key question is how well it holds up over time; have had one portable back-up in past suddenly go dead after a few years despite low back-up frequency (this is an offsite back-up to the back-up).

First thing is, the price. I got this portable hard drive for only $100 which is really low considering the storage of it is 4 TERABYTES. But besides the price, this hard drive is built with PURE beauty along as durability. I accidentally threw my backpack which had the hard drive sitting in the front pocket across my room having it hit my wood flooring hard yet it still runs like it was right out of the box. I also love the fact that it comes with software to lock the hard drive and keep it secured.

I must admit that I haven't used this drive a lot yet, but I like the sizes - both physical and electronic. The faster USB 3 interface is the primary reason I opted to buy a new drive at this time. And, if buying a new drive, I figured I might as well go big. The only disappointment so far is that, unlike in prior times, there was no storage/transport case included. As prices of mass storage devices have come down, they've learned another way to squeeze you for an additional $15-$20 - make you buy a case, or put your purchase at risk.

A 4TB external hard drive gives on a lot of real-estate to perform a lot of tasks. When I get the time to deal with the hard drive, it will house a version of Linux, and will be used full time 24/7. This is my preference for using these external hard drives, since I'm not crazy of having to deal with Windows. I've installed a free version on a USB connected hard drive for years, and since the external hard drives are not turned on and off very often they seem to last much longer just running constantly.

As a desktop support technician, I was thinking about to purchase a storage device which I can carry on my pocket or backpack. So it will be very convenient to transfer data or backup user's profile, even install some software packages. This portable HD comes with 4TB volume, but only costs close to a 3TB drive. You really can't beat the price; It is really a bargain!! To operate this device is so easy, because it is plug-and play. Even a regular user can use it without any problem. The only thing I need right now is to get a protecting case for this little guy.

It’s not exactly crimson red, it’s off red like a weird dark pink. It’s quite small and emanates an odd whirring noise once synced to the PS4. The main issue I have with this is the included short usb cord has to be tussled with to get recognition in PS4 devices setting and don’t unplug while using it or transferring files! It helps stretch my PS4 memory which is the 1st priority & it does takes some data a while to complete processing. Worth the money I paid for & delivery was quick.
