It's dependable and well-built but the preloaded software is annoying.

Large storage capacity, but it would have been nice to know that the pre-installed software is no longer supported before I purchased this external hard drive.

The HD is easy to use and seems to work fine. I do not use the WD software, so can not offer any evaluation for the software.

It had issues doing the back up on WD software would not show up or would take hours longer and not complete. I ended up doing cloning of drives with a Samsung program to match with the SSD from them and completed in 1/5 the time.

Quick USB 3.0 transfers, the software is kinda archaic so use another program to your liking. Compact and sleek looking.

Storage devices works quite well by just plugging it in and utilizing the copy paste features. WD's software management platform that it advises you download to manage your backups never seems to work for me.

My IMAC has a slow hard drive and runs slowly, especially launching software. I put all of my software including the operating system on the SSD and it runs like a racehorse. I left my documents and extensive collection of photos on the IMAC harddrive.

Unit works great with my Surface Book 2. The security lock software is a tad unpredictable and the drive will lock out for no apparent reason. Other than that, a solid product.

Easy to use and setup. Drive is pretty fast. Back up software is very intuitive, however, software will only work on Western Digital external drives.

It offers a lot of storage. It has A good write rate. It offers a lot of storage. I don't like the software that unlocks the drive. I like that I can play media on 1 of my smart TVs but hate that it can't be read by my other smart TV. One of my lap tops will not write to drive even though I have installed the software that came with the drive. It worked once allowing me to write files to drive, however it never has since. On that computer. And now its locked on that computer. Because that's my primary computer this is extremely annoying.

Tons of storage and easy to hook up, but dealing with the software interface upfront made it more difficult (at least with a Mac). Ended up deleting and reformatting to use with Mac. Then it worked just fine. Sleek design if anyone is focused on that.

The drive itself is compact and a good drive. The colors are nice and bright. The software is faulty. When the WD software is installed on my computer the floppy drive spins continually. When the software is removed the floppy drive stops spinning. Someone else said that their card reader is continually accessing when the software is installed. The older software does not do this. But the older software does not recognize the newer drive. I contacted WD and they don't know. So I use the drive without the WD software. The latest software on the WD web site does the same thing. The software is the reason I gave it a 3 star, otherwise I would give it a 5 star.

I tried downloading the software for this drive, and the back-up software would not download. I couldn't even get it to download from the website. I had to call customer support 3 times before they came up with a solution. After my second phone call to them, they were supposed to call me back, but they sent an email stating my phone number wasn't correct. So I had to call them again. It just wasn't worth the effort.

It's alright but I don't really like the native software for security. I have issues with it working on my Macbook air. It takes a while for it to recognize and allow me to unlock it but it's very portable. Does not require any other power source other then from the USB. For a desktop solution I would suggest getting something else but for traveling, it would be good.

This model works well with older windows 7 and new windows 10 computers. I personally don't like the look but that's just aesthetics and the price was right - cheaper than BestBuy exclusive WD model "easystore" with same specs but lesser security. No logic to me why Best Buys "Easy Store" model with same specs is MORE money especially since most references say the easy store model actually has less security features and maybe was supposed to be the less expensive model. In any case this one does what it's supposed to do. I use other backup software though because I dont like that wd software does not have "regular" explorer browsing of files. Cobian is still a decent freebie or I use Windows backup if I don't want/ need non-proprietary file access. Its also quite fine to use simply as external storage with or without automated back-up.

Transfer rate is good once you get past the very beginning of the disk. Latency seems high as my one software program that constantly does a very large number of writes to disk doesn't work with it because it can't keep up. I think it's due to the use of USB3 instead of eSATA but USB3 most PCs have and probably higher Max transfer rate while eSATA less common. This software should probably be used with an internal drive with a different connector type. Would be nice if the company wrote the included software to work for Linux. My review might be a little harsh 4/5 since the drive does what it claims from what I can tell. However, I'll use the slower drive speed at the beginning of the disk as an excuse. Would be nice to review this drive in a year as reliability is my main concern.
