This is your typical external hard drive. It is easy to install and no special talent is needed. The only reason I got it was it was on sale. If another one had been on sale I would have bought it.

Found the drive to be extremely slow. Used for system back up. Took hours and hours to do backup and to upload data to new MAC. Not worth time and frustration.

Firmware Upgrade corrupted Router boot sequence.

I bought this R7000 after my previous Netgear AC1750 Router died. This one worked for less than 1 year and 10 months then hung up during a Firmware upgrade via their Nighthawk App. I didn’t interrupt the process, it simply screwed up all by itself. This corrupted the firmware code that controls the boot sequence. Now it is stuck in what's known as a "Brick" mode. It’s a $200 “brick” that cannot do anything. Doing factory resets every way I find on the internet doesn’t fix it. The power LED just flashes white after an incomplete boot. After searching the internet and the Netgear Support group, I find that this seems to be a common Netgear problem, and there is no simple solution. I had to download the firmware file to my Windows Desktop and manually install it using a Windows tftp file transfer process via the ethernet port on the router. I have limited experience using this type of file transfer, so it took me more than 2 hours to finally get the router firmware loaded and get it running again. Of course, this process brought it back to factory default mode, so I had to then reconfigure its’ SSID Network name, security settings, and password all over again. I do NOT recommend Netgear products.

I have two of these. One works fine. The other chugs along, making weird noises while taking forever for files to be transferred to or from it.

My passport external hard drive doesn't work

My Passport For Mac 2tb External Usb 3.0 Portable Hard Drive - Black does not seem to want to operate correctly. It tells me that it is unable to back up my hard drive and when I go to the prompts, it doesn't help me set up so that it works. I shouldn't have to pay to have someone set it up, it should be box "ready"! It says, Time Machine couldn't back up to 'My Passport for Mac', and when I ask for details it says, "...an error occurred while creating backup folder'. I select backup disk, "My Passport for Mac" and an hour later we go through it again. Meanwhile I have no assurance that it is backing up, because it isn't.

Just over a year of very gradual and careful use and the hard drive completely corrupted. My wife is a wedding photographer and also edits videos so all recent projects we needed to work on are gone along with our own personal wedding photos. Worst part is Best Buy charges $50 for diagnostic, minimum $200 for data recovery if they can do it in store and anywhere from $350-$1200 if they ship to Geek Squad. Absolutely horrible treatment of Elite Plus members.
