Even if you decide not to use Webroot, it would be wise to use at least some form of antivirus on the system. Macs get viruses just like a Windows machine does, and increasingly more so as we move forward.

In fact, after it was downloaded, I got a lot of spam. Three Geek squad members tried to assist until finally I was connected to someone who was able to get rid of the spam

Spam is not caused by a virus and that is not something we protect against. It is best to contact your email service provider for issues with that. In regards to Apple products getting viruses, this is actually quite common nowadays because customers are under the impression that their Macs are safe, when they are not. We advise installing a security program on your Mac. The iPad and iPhone are much safer.
