This light switch and the other outlet style plug has worked reliably for over 3 years. There would be occasional hiccups like power interruptions that cause the switches to restart, but they have never failed on me. However, you are at the mercy of your internet connection and if you happen to be away while the network crashes, you won't be able to communicate with the switches. The daily programs will continue to work regardless. Setting this up properly does require some networking knowledge and how to properly implement security. The switches both work on hidden and broadcasted SSID Wifi networks. Half of my switches work on the hidden SSID and the other half are connected to the broadcasted SSID. They do support security password keys, but if you want an extra layer of protection, turn on your router/basestation's MAC address control to enable only recognized and authorized devices access to your wireless network. I have assigned static IP address to these switches by way of their MAC addresses, to avoid IP conflict when power cycling happens to my router. This is the general rule for all of my stay-at-home devices. Update 2017 My eleventh switch will be arriving tomorrow. The first switch I bought in 2013 is still working to this day. All switches are still working reliably. Works perfectly with NEST thermostat, Amazon Echo and IFTTT. Update Dec 2017 1. The WEMO App first lets you name each switch and then allows you to set up "Rules" for unattended on/off times to a switch or a group of switches. So that a switch or a group of switches will turn on/off at a scheduled time. 2. The Amazon Alexa App allows you to first create intelligent named "Groups" of switches, such as "Exterior Lights", "Interior Lights", "Living Room Lights", so you can use voice control to address them in a meaningful way. "Alexa, turn off Living Room Lights" or "Alexa, turn off All Lights." 3. IFTTT will integrate all the functionality of your smart devices with WEMO and ALEXA (NEST and others too). i.e. The GPS in a smart phone can be used to create an invisible fence that can turn WEMO switches on/off as you pass in/out of its perimeter. My living room lights and exterior lights come on when I'm about half a mile from home. NEST can also sense I'm coming home and start cooling/heating the house. The are thousands of "recipes" ready to use. With these three Apps together, there are thousands of possibilities to automate your home if you are willing to experiment. These are just some of the ways I use mine. Update March 2018 1. Recently purchased the Wemo Mini Smart Plug to make the uplights in the kitchen cabinets smart. Set up was easy but I first had to add the switch's MAC address to my basestation before connecting to one of my home's SSIDs. 2. That makes twelve switches and all are active and functioning as you can see. 3. The Wemo App is very laggy, but luckily with voice activation, I rarely launch the app except to take screenshots. I use Alexa's voice recognition instead. The Mac version of the app needs to support higher resolution displays like the Android one does.

I have the wall memo switches along with the light switch memo switch. These are all around "great". I installed my Wemo switch in my master bathroom. I have my alarm set to go off Monday thru Friday. Through my Wemo light switch I set up a rule to turn on my master bathroom light a few minutes after my alarm goes off. I have it set to turn off shortly after I leave for work everyday. Through the Wemo outlet switches I have in my house they are set up to various lamps in my house. Again, all scheduled to come on at certain time in the morning while I'm getting ready for work. The advantage to all of this, I wake up, all these lights turn on on their own, and when I leave, shortly after they all turn off. I have the same thing set up in the evening, for certain lamps to come on when it's getting dark and then they turn off at a designated time. Bottom line is, it's just cool. I can use my iPhone, iPad, etc, to turn lights on and off from anywhere that I have internet access. Whether it's LTE or 3G or Wifi access, as long as I have access, I can control the lights in my house. The only down fall is this. When I first start the Wemo app, sometimes it doesn't recognize all of the devices. Some Wemo devices might pop up instantly, other's won't show at all. I've learned, on average, to turn the Wemo app on and just wait patiently. Within a minute, everything ( on average) will show up. If it doesn't, I force close the app and restart it and then wait the minute I just described. All of this can be a pain in the butt if your standing there waiting for the Wemo app to show your devices so you can turn your lights on. This, for me, is the only downfall to this device. With the light switch, you obviously have full control like a normal light switch. You just push the bottom of the switch and it gently rocks in and turns the light on/off. I suppose it's worth mentioning, my Wemo light switch, when you manually push the rocker switch squeaks a little like plastic rubbing on plastic. It's not a huge bother, it makes me concerned that it might be a little cheap, but I haven't had any issues. Install wasn't difficult for me. I'm comfortable with all sorts of home projects and computing projects, so this was a piece of cake for me. Green wire goes to Copper ground, the 2 black wires go to the 2 black wires running to your current switch and the all important white wire that goes to the Neutral (white) wire inside the light switch box. This isn't for everyone. I'm a "techy" kinda guy, so I love it. Some people it would probably not make sense to them or they would have difficulty with it (older folks that aren't into technology). But I've thought long and hard about how and where to implement all these switches in my house and have done so to the best of my ability. I would definitely recommend these switches to anyone who loves technology and home automation.

    Beware of security flaw

Once you llnk this to your home network it is NEVER erased. I had one of these and then gave it to my friend who lives 5 miles away. Even though he linked it to his network, once he got outside and the phone app launched it communicated with the Belkin Cloud server. Guess what ? He could see all my other Wemo devices I had in my home and control them. The light switch retains the old network and password. Belkin knows all about the flaw but have not corrected it. You can NEVER sell or give the switch to someone else once you link it to your network. The next person will have access to any other Wemo devices you own. it took Belkin 3 weeks to fix this.. You would never know this is going on. The only reson i stumbled onto it was i hlepd hookit up in my friend's house. Then we went out to dinner and we launched the Wemo app on our phones. i was shocked to see all of my devices on his phone and I could still see the switch on my phoneplus all of my own devices. The 2 networks were linked and crossed. Never buy a used on off of Ebay. The switch memory is never erased. You really cannot sell it to someone else either unless you have no other Wemo devices. it was by accident that I discovered the issue.

Installation for the Wemo Light Switch was fairly easy. After turning off my switch at the breaker, examining my current wiring, I determined that my setup met the needs for the Light Switch. You must have a ground wire AND neutral wire for installation. This is outlined in the instructions that came with the Light Switch. Also, the switch that you install this on must be a stand alone. You can not have two separate switches that work on the same light. Our living room switch was perfect for this and I now have the ability to turn on/off all four ceiling lights via the switch itself or thru my phone. Wemo has the ability to turn on/off the lights at certain time frames, or you can integrate with other Wemo components (Sensor) to have this switch on/off. My favorite is the integration with IFTTT. I have a Withings WiFi scale, so when I go to take a measurement in the morning (upstairs), my living room lights will automatically turn on, ready for when I head downstairs. This kind of automation is exactly what I needed. Anyone looking to add some automation to your house, I would recommend this product.

Belkin Wemo Products Are Good, But Not Great

I have standardized my smart home's switches on the Belkin Wemo line of products based upon previous positive experiences with Belkin products. I have also based all of my smart home usage around Amazon's Alexa voice controls. Unfortunately, I had just made my first purchase of 5 Wemo switches shortly after the Spectre and Meltdown issues were discovered. All of the Wemo devices stopped responding to Alexa (or responded very unreliably to Alexa) for about a week while Belkin applied patches to their servers that bridge their app and the Alexa AI. I was very frustrated that Belkin apparently did not have highly available and redundant servers in place for this functionality. Since that initial customer service pothole, the switches have performed acceptably. Often, there will be a 5 second delay between my command and Alexa's action, but the "Belkin Wemo is not responding" response is definitely less common these days. (Maybe once every 3 weeks or so.) I do see that there are firmware updates to the hardware pretty regularly. Obviously, the technology is still maturing, but Belkin seems to be making strides to improve their products. My initial concern was that the switches that I had decided on, and of which I have now installed 15 (switches, dimmers, and mini smart plugs), would become obsolete. I didn’t want to have to rip them all out and start over with new hardware! Luckily, it seems that Belkin is able to make their improvements via prolific firmware updates. In a nutshell, I'd say that the Belkin Wemo switches are decent and that it seems that Belkin is making efforts to continually improve them.

These WeMo light switches are high quality, attractive units that will look great in almost any home and allow you to seamlessly add wireless control functions to existing lights in the home without the need for special wiring and bulbs. Installation is straightforward (just remember that you can only install for lights controlled from just one switch - multi-pole switches cannot be replaced with a WeMo switch). The switch is controlled from a simple app which also allows you to set rules for when lights will go on and off. I find the rules especially useful, and there are some thoughtful triggers such as linking times to a certain number of minutes before or after sundown. My switches have been bullet proof, but some users have reported issues. In general, I think the consistent updates to the software running each switch are continuously improving reliability. That said, I did run into an issue where an upgrade to my wireless router broke the WiFi functions on these switches. Downgrading the router fixed the issue. The potential compatibility issues are the only reason these don'y get a 5/5, but from my limited time with them I can confirm that Belkin is working constantly on improving them. In addition to the app, Belkin has added support for "Internet of Things" control service IFTTT, so the number of triggers are potentially limitless. Not only can switches be triggered by IFTTT events (such as turning on lights when you get close to home), but the switch can also trigger an IFTTT event with a long press. This allows you to do things like have a long press on a single switch turn all the lights on or off. One more big plus - these work seamlessly and really well with Amazon Echo / Alexa systems. "Alexa, turn off the lights .. "

These switches work better than some of the competition like smartthings. Unlike most other HA systems WEMO works when your internet is down from home. As far as price very competitive and I think less expensive since there is no hub to buy also. And easy to setup and make conditional rules. Some wannabe programmers poopoo them due to the lack of an api, but these guys want a gadget not a reliable tool. It dies integrate with IFTTT so you can do quite a bit more than what the app includes, making it play well with other devices from other makers. With IFTTT the light switch becomes 2 switches with a long press you can have IFTTT do thing like send a text or make a phone call. I have the bedroom switches programmed with a long switch to call family for help in an emergency, and the back porch and front porch light switches programmed to call my phone so I can find it when I misplaced it, there are dozens of things the long press can do. The Amazon ECHO can control WEMO with natural voice commands and fairly fluid commands. My entire house uses WEMO, I removed Smartthings due to continual server issues on their end making it impossible to use often times. So WEMO is a great solution 4 WEMO Switch - 4 Insight - 16 WEMO Light Switches - 1 WEMO Link with 2 bulbs - 4 WEMO HD cameras - 1 WEMO Motion - and lastly 2 WEMO Makers. And I love them all

This item is an awesome convenience to your wireless networking. Installation is a flash, it does not require a rocket science nor a book of wisdom to apply to common sense. All wires are colored and marked to connect to the respective colored wires. The beauty about this product is that you can program it (really not a programming but rather setting the timeframe to turn on/off at specified time, of course if you wish to call it programming, which contradicts my perception about the programming idea, which involves more complex set of setups and properties) to turn on/off at specified timeframe. The switch can be installed in the mix of other switches just as it shown in the pictures I uploaded, or you can install it individually if an individually available socket is feasible. Hahaha. Do to it as you wish, as it looks good to your eyes. It's all good. It cost me $14, but if you're going to pay $55 for it and then bungle it up, it might be a painstaking mess. Do your best, but do not substitute it with your worst! 7ou can't go wrong with it. This item goes along with you. It does not go against you.. Hehehehe

The premise of this switch is fascinating, control your lights remotely and in some circumstances, with your voice. I recommend you get, or either own, Amazon Echo or Google Home for the full experience. Other than having the ability to turn lights off remotely (say when you're on vacation) the real magic is being able to turn on/off the lights with your voice. The set up is pretty straightforward. The installation is easy if you have any do-it-yourself know how. You just need to turn off the power to the switch and unscrew some screws. The one big caveat is the white wire (when you get the packaging you'll know) but you are required to have a white wire (neutral) in your switch box for this to work. It's my understanding if your house is less than 20 years old, you should have one. Mine were unused and wrapped tightly in the back of the switch box. Once it's installed, it's pretty easy to setup., You download the app and run through it's pretty straightforward set up. The app is clean and easy to understand and for the most part, the set up was painfree. Although I did get hung up on connecting it to Wi-Fi, but that was before I realized the importance of the "white" wire. Once set up, I linked it to both my Amazon Alexa app and Google Home app and voila. Voice activated lights. All I say is "Hey Google, turn the lights on in the kitchen" or something close to that, and Google turns the lights on. Of all smart home tech, I put lights at the top of the list of must-haves, right below thermostat.

I purchased several of these switches to control ceiling fans throughout the house using 3 different Amazon Echos. While it has only been a few weeks all has gone as planned. Either voice command through "Alexa" or a tap of the switch toggles the power to a fan as intended. The setup was intuitive and fairly quick. All of the 10+ Belkin Wemo items we've purchased so far required a firmware update once connected to our wifi but this was done through the wemo app on my iPhone 6s. The wemo app is free and makes setting up these switches painless. Instructions are clear and easy to follow for someone that knows nothing about electricity. One consideration when deciding if this switch will work for your project is that this device must be the only switch controlling power to a specific outlet. We wanted to use the switch to control fans that could be toggled on or off from more than one place in the house. To do this I had to do a Google search and quickly came across a step-by-step guide to disconnecting and bypassing the extra switch. I would only recommend this for use when what needs to be controlled is hardwired (like a ceiling fan) or because you like the look of the switch. The Wemo Insight switch requires zero wiring and monitors power consumption. The Insight switch is great for floor and table lamps, indoor christmas lights, etc.

I haven't dabbled in smart home stuff too much yet, as I can't determine which standard I want to use. I had a need to have my outside lights come on at dusk and shut off at dawn, and after reading reviews I decided to give the WeMo switch a try since it works on WiFi and doesn't need a smart hub. Be aware that this switch takes up a fair amount of space in the electrical box. I was installing it into a double switch that had a dimmer next to it, and I ended up having to move the dimmer to another location (it's a three-way switched light) so that I could fit the WeMo switch in the box. After moving the dimmer I got the WeMo in without indicent, and once it was installed it only took about 10 minutes to get it up and running (took a little over an hour to install it, since I had to move the dimmer for the other light to another spot). The app was a little confusing at first, but after reading the instructions I figured out what I was doing wrong, and I now have my outdoor lights coming on at dusk and staying on until dawn. There are a ton of options in the app for on/off times and triggers. All in all very happy.

Preface: I believe this is the older model but it’s lower price and at the time we purchased- it was the lowest price around - even beat online pricing. We also use Wemo’s LED bulbs in & around our ENTIRE home, even one in our back porch light fixture that takes normal size bulbs. Our front porch light, however is a different story and if we were to use a Wemo bulb would have required installing a whole new & different fixture. Wemo’s Light Switch was the solution. Instead of swapping a fixture - we installed this and that way we were able to keep our special fixture. Thinking of doing the same kind of swap for other areas so we can use our Wemo bulbs for other things. As for the device: works great, program multiple on and off times, set it for auto sunrise & sunset and automatically adjusts throughout year as day’s get shorter or longer.

I never write reviews but I have to write one on this device. I purchased the light switch for outside lights to my home. Install was easy. Had to rearrange my switches and purchase a new faceplate as I have 3 switches. I am not a handyman but this was not difficult As noted, getting everything back into the switch box may take some patience.Once you understand how "rules" work, that is easy too. Great that it adjusts to sunset and sunrise times. Working like a champ. I liked it so much I went out and purchased 4 Wemo switches to control lighting while out of town. Worked very well also. Lights go on when you program them. No more "Aren't our lights supposed to be on?" when you return from vacation late at night. In fact, I am finding we are still using them even though we are home from vacation to turn certain lights on at sunset. I also like the idea that firmware is updated so as Belkin improves the product, your device's firmware can be upgraded without cost. I am a tech guy and this is one the best tech purchases of the year. Now the only question is durability; how long will it last?

More than 50% of our home is covered by automated lights. However, in our kitchen, builder chose to install 4 pole CFL lights and I had no option to replace to automated lights without changing the entire ceiling casings. Since I was using Hue lights for rest of the house, I was not ready to use WeMo yet. Anyways Echo recently announced that they start supporting WeMo which I thought is interesting. I bought it from local BBY and installed it and connected to my iPhone and Echo, voila no more worries about leaving kitchen lights on at nights. Now we can simply tap on our smartphones or ask "Alexa" to turn off kitchen lights at night saving a trip downstairs! Installation is pretty simple. I am a electronics/electrical experienced person. If you are scared of working with electrical outlets etc., get it installed by a pro. Safety first! As far as the product specifications or features concerned, everything is working as claimed by manufacturer. We are happy with the product. I would have replaced more switched with WeMo, but sadly rest of the switches I need are either two way and/or dimmable.

Was looking for a wall switch that would both integrate with my Smartthings Home Automation Hub AND with my Wemo smart outlets. Simple installation (remember you MUST have a Neutral for this to work) and setup w/ the Wemo App equally simple. For this switch, I have it controlling my Patio Light and it's connected to Smartthings and the Patio Door Sensor. Here's how it works. When the Slider Door is opened (only after dark) the Light will automatically come on and stay on until either the door is closed (w/ 15 minute delay) OR sunrise. Alternately, just tap the switch and the light works as w/ normal switch. Now, IF my motion detector OR smoke alarm goes off, then the light (along with all my other Wemo / Smartthings lights) will come on. Even if the network goes down, it remembers its schedule. As you can see, the possibilities are endless. Just the Wemo alone gives you control at home and away and allows for timers and such. Integrate with other smart devices and the possibilities are endless.

Bought 3 Wemo Dimmers September 2017 one of the units recently failed. Called Wemo Technical Support as the dimmer has a (3) year warranty https://www.belkin.com/us/support-article?articleNum=24620). Wemo refused to honor their own warranty even after I had proof of purchase from Best Buy. Tech support said when I bought my dimmer only came with a (1) year warranty. This is not true as researched this product and waited for its first release. Check out the link to their warranty page. Very disappointing Belkin wont honor their own warranty. Use this switch to control heat tape on the roof of our vacation home. Instead of having the heat tape on 24/7, which was generating enormous electric bills, we now can turn it on remotely only when we know there is snow on the roof (as seen via a security camera). FYI, the electrician connected this switch to a "coil". The coil bears the high amp load of the heat tape. When the switch is on the coil gets activated, which in turn activates the heat tape. Likewise, when the switch is off the coil is deactivated and the heat tape turns off. This was a great option for us to turn the heat tape on and off from our primary residence (or anywhere else, for that matter). Giving 4 stars only because we have only had it for a few weeks and not yet sure of the long term effectiveness...

Product works great and set up and install were straight forward. It does help if you’re familiar with wiring but if not, everything is color coded and labeled very well with good directions. I put a dimmer and two regular wemo WiFi switches in a triple gang box and it was a tight fit due to the size of these switches. They are bigger than regular switches and regular dimmer switches as well. Set on the app works well and is simple to navigate. Just wish it worked with Harmony remotes but as of now, it doesn’t. You can use it with Alexa and control the Wemo and Harmony hub with your voice but I would like to be able to control it with my remote too. Not just voice or smart phone. Biggest reason to choose this setup over Phillips Hue was the ability to still use the switches manually like normal switches. They work great.

I don't know much about electrical wiring, but the instructions given were concise and accurate. I was able to get 3 of these units installed in less than 5-8 minutes apiece. Just make sure that you have a neutral wire available. The software setup took another couple of minutes and everything was good to go. Ninety percent of my home lighting is controlled via Control4 Home Automation but I wanted to try these on a couple of circuits that did not have Control4 applied to them. These switches are $50 a piece vs. $200 for installation of a single Control4 switch. While they cannot be accessed and automated via the Control4 system, they provide a nice and inexpensive way to gain a semblance of automation. The circuits I applied these to are infrequently used circuits like the roof plugs for Christmas lighting, secondary garage bay lights and garage door soffit lights. I was able to set schedules for each switch easily. They work!

I purchased this switch to operate an indoor ceiling fan. Prior to installing this switch, I had no experience installing any kind of electrical swith. The installation lasted about 35 minutes total. That includes switching off the power at the breaker box to having my helper turn it back on and making sure my home didn’t explode. The install was pretty easy as I had the wemo video playing on my iphone as I went step by step. The most difficult part for me was fitting all the screw caps back into the box after making all the connections. In regards to functionality, when I use the physical control, the switch has been 100% reliable. However, this is what i took a star off for, the switch does sometimes miss an Alexa voice command. I do not believe it is an issue with the Echo Spot since other lights in the group almost always respond. Thanks for taking the time to read my review and I hope it was helpful.
