The door sensor wouldn't register that the door was closed, so we opened and closed the door a bunch of times. Eventually, it registered that the door was closed, and the microwave was able to start. It started with a clicking noise for 3 seconds and stopped.

Whirlpool was contacted and a factory authorized repair center technician was quickly dispatched. The problem was diagnosed as a failed magnetron and the part was ordered. It's been a month now with no indication of when the part will arrive. I rate this as very poor manufacturer support.
