I had to purchase a special tiny screwdriver to remove it. The battery cover slides on and snaps in place firmly just like any other remote now. I threw away the tiny screw since it served no purpose other than to make it impossible to open the battery compartment. This example of Whirlpool engineering has me worried about the air conditioner. I hope the worker who designed the remote didn't get involved with the air conditioner at all. As it is, I will think long and hard before I buy anything Whirlpool again.

The first time we plugged it in, it sounded like a freight train on any setting. Maybe it was a lemon. We returned it the next day. Best Buy took it back, no questions asked!

Also the economy option which saves energy works great! I'm glad I went with the whirlpool brand! Definitely a good air conditioner!!
