The Speaker that Does it all!

THIS… IS the LG Sound Suite M5, LG’s next generation speaker that can do it all. The M5 can function as a standalone speaker to add sound to any room (able to be painted with others) or connected to your LG soundbar to complete your sound experience. With tons of features and plenty of sound, let's take a look at just how well the M5 performs.
Ok so taking this out of the box and right off the start, the M5 looks fantastic. Its sleek yet super modern aesthetic allows it to blend in anywhere and with a reasonable footprint, it is easily placed on any table (or mounted on your stand/wall). The speaker has a metal foot at the bottom and a sleek metal grill on the top with a cloth wrapping around the front giving it a super premium aesthetic. The fabric does a good job at hiding dust while also being easy to clean with a lint roller and a few rolls over the fabric. On the top of the speaker, you will see its 5 button touch user interface. It has the traditional volume up and down with a pause and play button, an input button and then a heart button. The heart button is a super neat ‘customizable’ button which changes to a preset playlist, content or feature with one touch. On the rear of the speaker is a power button, a usb-c port to plug into your other device for audio such as a PC/usb and a mic on/off switch for the microphone used when calibrating your room. Something unique that LG did was the inclusion of an adjustable RGB strip at the bottom which it uses to show
Setting up the M5 is really simple and straightforward. You are prompted to download the LG ThinQ app and create an account with LG which was effortless, followed by a quick pairing and poof! Done! My M5 speakers got an immediate firmware update that did take a few minutes, but otherwise, I was set up and ready to go in less than 10 minutes. LG using their top of the line Alpha 11 processor really shows in not only how these speakers respond to touch input, but in its near instant response from the app as well. I paired these M5’s to my H7 for a complete sound setup and honestly had no issues as the process was not only easy but really quick. The App allows you to control the M5’s rather easily for adjustments and enabling smart features such as its spotify connectivity. The cool thing about the M5 is that it will wirelessly connect to your newest generation (gen 5) LG TV wirelessly (2.4g/5ghz wifi) without the need for a soundbar as a hub. You can also use 4 of these in tandem (M5/M7) for any room with no other device needed, but must have at least 2 M5’s for dolby surround sound.
Ok, so this is what we are alllll here for! How does it sound? Well…Really good! It is a 1.1.1 setup, So 1 main speaker, 1 subwoofer (3”) and 1 ‘height’ (up firing) speaker that does a really good job at filling up a medium sized room when in tandem. I think that these offer a really well balanced sound profile with the 3” subwoofer, and with the app you get decent control over the sound stage as well with several different modes and a 3 band EQ. LG does have an ‘AI mode’ that auto adjusts the sound profile based on what it thinks the music is and to be honest it is really good and the mode I use for everything. I think that outside of a traditional theater sound, the M5 and M7 speakers work fantastic for adding comprehensive music abilities to a kitchen or general space that doesn’t revolve around a TV. The reliable connection and easy to interface makes me want to put these all over my house due to their great sound and fantastic reliability.
Wrapping this up, I was shocked to see just how good these speakers would be when not used exclusively for home theater use! Normally my wife is not too entertained by the new gizmos that I bring through the door, but having music this good in surround sound in the kitchen area while we cook has sold her on getting more of the M5’s. That's before we even get into just how good these speakers are when paired to my H7 soundbar. LG has truly hit it out of the park with these, making it effortless to recommend from a home theater standpoint, or a home audio. That being said, bestbuy has a great return policy so you are never stuck with a speaker that doesn't fit your home or your expectations. Until next time :)

Speakers came in perfect condition from my local carrier. Unboxing is straight forward and upon opening you immediately notice the incredible build quality! Absolutely beautiful design in my opinion that could fit into any household and keep the misses happy due to its aesthetics! I also really like the design because they can fit on almost any stand or any table and fit in to anything. We paired these with our LG soundbar and our 83” C5 OLED TV. Pairing was straightforward in the app where you can make multiple sound adjustments depending but if you are going to buy this high end speakers use the sound mapping it provides via the app to calibrate your specific living area. This makes a huge difference and in my opinion is something you can’t skip. For sound we used them as stand alone and a stereo pair and paired with our LG soundbar for atmos content. I sit really close to the left rear and while listening to music in stereo it’s full blast but I’m spacial audio that’s where you win. I love the ability to control the system in multiple ways… remote, app, or my OLED TV. Still some software glitches but I’m sure updates are coming. I recommend.

Amazing set of speakers. Each one is basically a 3 in 1. They have a front and up firing speakers and integrated woofer. The have the newest Dolby Atmos flex connect feature, that you can use to connect them wirelessly and in any place, they don't have to be either just front or rears, place then anywhere and they will be tunned accordingly. The first and main feature, is if you own one of the newest LG Oled TV series 5 (I have a C5), you can add them to the TV via this system (my TV got a firmware update for this, just FYI), and the TV will work as a center speaker and these can be used as additional speakers, i.e like rear surrounds. I did test that and works good, however since I have also the H7 soundbar that works with these, I ended up pairing them with it. The soundbar does its tunes and configures them correctly to where you place them. I did put them on the rear. And each speaker, like I mentioned are basically a 1.1.1 system. They fire to the front, and up (so the sound bounces on the ceiling and hits you as if you had real height speakers) and they also have an included woofer, and this was great, I was thinking I was going to have to buy their woofer to add it (they have one you can add), but it the bass was great enough and great for me. What surprised the most, is the height channels sounds, were great and distinctive, they usually recommend for best performance a flat ceiling, and unfortunately mine is slanted, but with its auto tunning with Dolby flex connect, it was great and I was amazed! With Dolby flex connect you can add more if you want, so I'm planning on getting another pair and put them on the side, instead of a woofer (plenty of bass as it is). Amazing solution from LG that lets you flexible upgrade your sound system and easily tune it!!!

A Modular Dolby Atmos Setup
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
This pair of LG Sound Suite M5 speakers are an absolute treat for my LG C5 65” TV.
These speakers are very unique in that when paired with a compatible LG TV, you can utilize Dolby Atmos Flex Connect (DAFC) directly through the TV’s software, independently of the Sound Suite H7 soundbar.
DAFC analyzes your room and then dynamically assigns roles to each speaker to create a Dolby Atmos layout. In other words, moving the M5 speakers behind you will make them function as true rear speakers. Move them to the front and it’ll recalibrate and widen the front soundstage. The TV speakers function as the center channel if you are running this setup without the soundbar. You can also run these in stereo mode, which makes them just all around great WiFi or Bluetooth speakers.
The sound quality on these is absolutely incredible. They are technically considered 1.1.1 speakers, and the onboard sub produces an amazing low end. They legitimately sound like you have a small independent subwoofer in the setup, and if you add the H7 soundbar then you are really in for an experience. I have this setup in my master bedroom and I’m honestly not sure if I’ll pursue the independent sub when it’s released, simply because of how good this setup already sounds.
Setup can be a bit tricky to figure out, especially if you are trying to use the app without the soundbar in the mix. If you are connecting these to the H7 soundbar, then the app is the way to go. If you have a compatible LG TV and want to utilize DAFC directly through the TV, you’ll need to go into your TV sound settings, look for External with TV Speaker, and then select the Dolby Atmos Flex Connect option.
The real selling point of these speakers and DAFC is how modular the whole system is. You can start with just a pair of M5 speakers and later add the soundbar or expand further. Since DAFC adapts to your room, you can use your speakers in different configurations, just remember you need two M5 speakers to run DAFC properly.
I’ll be honest, if I had to choose between a pair of M5 speakers and the H7 soundbar, I would go with the pair of speakers all day. Please don’t get me wrong, because the soundbar is a work of art, but having the pair of M5s and using the TVs speakers as a center gives a better surround experience and surprisingly strong bass on their own.
My one gripe, and the same is true for the H7, is that you can only select four colors for the LED in active mode inside of the app. These speakers could clearly support more, it’s simply an app limitation, and stuff like that tends to bother me more than it should.
All in all, this pair of speakers absolutely blows me away, and the fact that you can run DAFC with a compatible LG TV and bypass the soundbar is simply amazing. I’ve had some of the best soundbars and combos over the years, and this is without a doubt the best setup I’ve ever had. For reference, I’m running two M5s with the H7 soundbar on my LG C5 65” TV.

Great Wireless Speakers for LG's Sound Suite Setup
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
We have two of these paired with a H7 soundbar, all part of the LG Sound Suite. On their own, they sound great, but lack a bit of bass. We could go a bit larger and get the M7s, but for us, they’re the perfect size - any larger and I’d feel they’d be a bit too large for where we like to place them. Of course, the brilliance of these is their support for Dolby Atmos FlexConnect - allowing you to place them just about anywhere and use them for immersive movies paired with your TV, or music. Inside, speakers are positioned well, with an upward firing driver that really does help direct sound and add to immersion in a space. Self-calibration and wireless playback means it’s very easy to place these. You just need to plug them in and it’s a simple process to pair them from LG’s ThinQ app.
Design-wise, they are classy and understated. They have a clean look with fabric covered screens and a metal, perforated top. A few controls along the top help these work as spacial speakers for music, something akin to most other whole-home speaker setups.
When paired with our H7 soundbar, these M5’s challenge our traditional 5.1 setup for quality of depth and immersion. LG also offers the W7 sub, which we may add for maximum flexibility in our living room as these FlexConnect enabled speakers allow for a much cleaner look. No more giant receiver, no more audio cables and difficult placement of rear speakers. We were able to place one M5 to the side and one behind and still managed to get amazingly immersive, balanced sound. Dolby Atmos’s FlexConnect really feels like the future of home audio, especially for TVs. It’s just very flexible, allowing unusual speaker placement and more or less speakers than you typically can do with traditional setups. The slight downside here is that you’ll be buying into a somewhat LG-specific system, but I feel the sound quality as part of a living room setup is worth it at the end of the day.
__ Overall __
These are slightly larger than expected, but I’m happy to have chosen these over the M7s for our space. The M5 is a little smaller, but perfect for filling out our system that includes the H7 soundbar. On their own, they lack bass a bit, but sound quality is good, as is build quality. I’m just slightly more careful not to get their fabric screens dirty. I’d recommend them to anyone hoping to utilize FlexConnect specifically... and especially if paired to an H7 soundbar - which I consider the hero of LG’s Sound Suite speakers.

Sterile Sounding, Excellent as Surrounds

This review will closely mirror my H7 Soundbar review as the M5's were sent with an H7 Soundbar for evaluation
PROS
Amazing Dolby Atmos Flex Connect
Nearly infinite placement options
Superior looks compared to predecessor
MUCH more appealing than their S95TR predecessors
CONS
Sterile / No Soul Sound
Mono drivers best suited for surrounds
Little help from bass radiators
Must have an H7 Soundbar or LG TV to use DAFC
No direct Amazon Music streaming support
LG ThinQ App
The LG ThinQ App is not my favorite app, but it does an excellent job of taking products from across LG's entire consumer products line and combining them into one, common app. LG has done a good job at making uncommon appliances all easy to use and configure with one app, instead of forcing users to use multiple apps for each of its product lines. They should get a tip of the hat for their efforts. Not to mention, the ThinQ app works equally well on my Android 16 devices as well as my iOS devices.
SET-UP
The M5's are set-up and configured easily with the ThinQ app. Set-up and firmware updates are easy to complete and pain-free. Upon first opening the M5's, I tested them solely as a stereo pair with no soundbar. Once plugged in and their firmware updated, they easily "talked" to each other and without the soundbar, magically figured out I was wanting them set up as a stereo L/R configuration. It was slick. An immediate prompt verified my desires and after a somewhat lengthy programming, they were up and running without issue. It was slick how they worked and calibrated themselves.
SOUND QUALITY
Like I said above, this review will closely mirror my H7 review, the sound from the M5's is sterile and has no soul. They aren't overly bright, nor are they warm and rich sounding. Judging speakers is 100% subjective as what one person likes, another may despise. To each their own. While I don't despise the sound quality of the M5's, I'm not taken aback by it either. The M5's would not be my first choice in a stereo pair for music listening, nor would they be my first choice as a L/R pair in a surround system. However, they work great as surround channels in a DAFC system, providing just the right amount of ambience where, frankly, the M7's would be overkill.
DOLBY ATMOS FLEX CONNNECT
I think a little explanation could be needed when implementing a DAFC system, as it took me a bit of research to wrap my head around it.
Alone, the M5 speakers will are not able to be used as a DAFC system. They can be used as a stereo pair and tied together easily with the LG ThinQ app, but in order to implement them in a DAFC scenario, buyers must either have a compatible LG TV with DAFC built-in or the H7 Sound Suite Soundbar, or both. If you have a compatible LG TV, the TV becomes the brains of the DAFC system and serves as the controller. It will "reach out" to the M5's and determine their placement and positioning and do the math and configuration of your system. Likewise, if you don't have a compatible LG TV, you must have the H7 soundbar to have a DAFC system. You can hook an H7 soundbar to any TV via the e-ARC HDMI port and let the H7 become the brains of the DAFC system. It will take over the role of the controller and configure your system.
I tried the M5's with a compatible LG TV and with a non-compatible Hisense TV using its e-ARC channel and found that either way, DAFC performed equally with the only difference be the quality of sound from the TV's internal speakers versus a dedicated soundbar.
CONS
I don't like that by default, the M5's cannot be used a destination source for Amazon Prime Music streaming. They are only compatible with Spotify Connect. I don't use Spotify, so for me, it is demerit for the M5's.
Secondly, I'm not a fan of the sterile sound produced by the M5's. It's not offensive by any means, they just lack soul. There's no warmth, there's no musicality. As a set of surrounds, they work perfect, but I would not use them as a stereo pair for streaming or as my main L/R channels in a full DAFC system. Again, evaluating speakers is totally subjective and I fully admit that I'm snobby when it comes to listening.
FINAL THOUGHT
Would I recommend the M5's? Yes. They work great a set of DAFC surround channels. That's how I have them configured in my system. I initially tried them as standalone L/R stereo pair and then used them as L/R channels along with my H7 soundbar. They didn't cut it for me. But they work perfect as an inconspicuous set of surrounds.
Configuring them in any scenario is pain-free and some of the easiest I've ever experienced. Anyone that's configured surround systems in the past should be absolutely floored at just how easy and accurate the Dolby Atmos Flex Connect system can be set-up. It is truly game changing. You literally place the speakers where you want them, plug them in, and using the room calibration tool in the ThinQ app. It plays a series of music and within seconds configures the positioning, crossover, delay, placement, etc. Just, Wow!

Purchased these M5 speakers alongside the H7 soundbar and the larger M7 speakers and believe I like these even more than the M7 especially for the price. I placed these in my small room and even just these 2 speakers alone sound clear and have subwoofers in the back which allowed for enough bass to be happy without disturbing the rest of the house. Connection was easy to setup and I really like how you can play music and hook these up stereo even over airplay. These also connected to the TV very easily and calibration was great to create an immersive atomos experience. I would definitely recommend these especially if you enjoy listening to music or what a easy surround system for your LG TV.

This speaker completely changed my home audio game. The spatial sound is incredibly immersive—it really does feel like the audio is flowing all around you, especially with Dolby Atmos content. I was impressed by how much punch the bass has for a speaker this size, and the vocals stay crystal clear even at higher volumes. Setup via the ThinQ app was straightforward, and I love the 'My Heart' button for instant access to my favorite playlists. If you have an LG TV, pairing two of these for a wire-free home theater setup is a no-brainer.

Easy. Versatile. Sound Very Good. Wireless? Yes!

Taken as a whole, I think my title more or less says it all and can be used for a quick general take. I really like these speakers, individually, but even more as part of a more complete system. That said, there are some pros and cons, as well as some use case and compatibility things to think about.
I like the design and look. Black. Clean. Modern. Some would perhaps say plain, but that is perfect for me. I think they would easily fit in with most people’s setups. There is also an optional ambient LED light along the bottom, that, while not really my thing, is done well. It is limited to only 4 colors for reasons I do not fully understand. They are well-built and feel good in the hand. Size-wise, again, they are “small” enough (although bigger than I originally expected) to easily find a location to be placed, especially given the nature of how these can be used.
The main concern, or at least a main concern for most, is how they sound. Personally, I think they sound quite good. The sound signature is fairly balanced, and covered, but if there is anything lacking it is slightly in the low end. I do not find this to really be an issue, as I am looking to use these as a larger part of a surround system for tv and especially movie content, where I think they really excel. I am not running my full setup yet, running 2 M5s with the H7 sound bar, but right now I could not be happier with what I am hearing. Loud, punchy, and immersive. I am waiting for the sub in the Sound Suite line to come out, as well as “contemplating” adding larger M7s, or more M5s, to the mix, but I am not sure I even need them.
I do think they also serve well as independent (no voice control) speakers for music, podcasts, or the like, and most people will not miss a beat, but a very select few may be looking for more from them in that regard.
Now, for me, as important as pure sound may be, ease of use and setup may just be as equally important. As someone who has put together quite a few surround systems together over the years, I can’t truly tell you how much work it is to get equipment, run wire, hide wire, place, calibrate, well, everything. It is a process. This has gotten better over the years (equipment), but also worse with some vastly better tech (Atmos).
Here, I could not be happier. Being able to not only do things wirelessly, but to also have the flexibility on speaker placement is something I was really looking forward to as well as appreciate. I can’t express how much better an experience this is, over the “old ways.” That said, the ThinQ app is not the best, but it does what is needed and does get you there. I had some brief issues with the initial connectivity and updates. Not really an issue for me, and could have BEEN me, but worth noting. Overall, though, everything went smoothly, it all talked to each other and was really kind of neat. And fast. And EASY.
That said, I do feel like I also need to briefly note setup also depends on your setup, sort of, for DAFC. If you have a compatible LG TV (C5 or G5, 55* or larger?), these can be set up directly there for the DAFC. They can also be set up via the H7 Sound Bar for the DAFC if that is part of your system and have a different TV. I would say just give it all a look beforehand.
Ultimately, I am really happy with these speakers, as well as the entire Sound Suite line. They look good, sound good, and are ridiculously easy to set up, individually, but especially as part of a larger surround system. Based on performance and ease of use, I think the value is there.

Awesome Companion Satellites for the Sound Suite
|
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
These M5 speakers make great companion speakers for the new LG Sound Suite Dolby Atmos Flex Connect system. It's one of the first nearly fully wireless Dolby Atmos systems that only require a power cable. Right now, the H7 hub sound bar still needs an HDMI cable for eARC but an update later this year should fix this.
As part of the Sound Suite system, the M5 is definitely worthy of your consideration if you want a premium soundbar with surround Dolby Atmos system.
My thoughts on this speaker are more focused on its capability as a remote speaker, since they've supported this for awhile, two rear speakers that can be used standalone or aggregated for music throughout the house. The main difference is that LG Sound Suite supports 2 more satellites currently and will eventually not need any cables to an LG TV. Check out the infographic from LG to see how it stacks up in terms of features.
One downside of this system as a standalone speaker is that it doesn't have Voice Assistant support, so it doesn't act like a speaker/mic but you can use those voice assistants on your phone and then broadcast to one or all Sound Suite speakers. Not a total showstopper but something you should be aware of.
These little satellites do look and sound great however, They even have a woofer and sub. You must use them in pairs or paired with an M7 because the M5 are mono speakers.
The main issue I ran into was pairing these to WiFi. You need to do this for updating and to control them via the app, but thankfully, DAFC is configured independently from the H7 soundbar OR directly to an LG OLED C5/G5 (2025 and newer) using Wowcast. LG recommends using the 2.4GHz band by disabling the 5GHz/6GHz bands on your main SSID, or preferably, setting up a 2.4GHz only SSID for IoT devices and connecting the speakers to that network. Its a good practice to keep anyways since a lot of IoT smart devices can only use 2.4GHz, but I only had issues with the M5, the H7 has a better WiFi radio or firmware and can connect to 2.4/5/6GHz SSIDs. Hopefully LG improves this process on the M5 with some firmware updates, which occur right after you connect to the network. If you don't connect within 5 seconds, try disabling 5/6GHz bands and try again. Or setup a diff SSID with just 2.4GHz, dont spin your wheels, the connection is fast (5s or less) if it can negotiate that SSID. I ended up connecting directly to an older WiFi6 Ring Pro Eero node and that worked, which then allowed me to switch back to my WiFi7 Mesh network after connecting and updating firmware.
I'm happy with the M5 speakers and will consider adding 2 more later for front or mid-front channels. Sound Suite is for real and should be high on the list for anyone who wants true wireless Dolby Atmos using Flex Connect.

*It's worth noting that the context of this review is with the M5 wireless speakers as surround sound satellites, in my case, as side-firing speakers when paired with the LG H7 soundbar and the LG C5 TV.*
I could wax poetic about my childhood dreams of one day setting up my 'man cave' with surround sound. Actually, when moving into my second house, I was super pumped that the partially finished basement had a couple of audio connectors installed in the drop ceiling, but alas, I never explored those.
When paired with the LG H7, the M5 wireless speakers are a treat to the ears. They perform well, get plenty loud, remain balanced with good quality through low volumes and high ones alike, and they look great. Also they're all wireless, which is pretty sweet. But, you really need to put the work in to be able to sit down and watch that first film in gorgeous surround sound alongside the amazing display of the LG C5.
When setting up my C5, I struggled to get the software 'switches' flipped where everything worked the way it should. I tried forums, the [very limited] instruction manual, the ThinQ app's AI assistant...I got there, but it took work.
And that was foreshadowing my experience for configuring the H7 and M5 speakers in a surround sound configuration. Again: they sound great. But it took longer than I care to admit to get these things functional. The answer, by the way, ended up being the ThinQ app, but even that wasn't a homerun and took its own kind of troubleshooting.
So, in terms of the 'goodness' of these speakers, understand that my experience is two firing at me from either side while the H7 serves and the center speaker.
What's maybe more interesting is, are these speakers worth an individual, separate purchase over any other speaker? Broadly, I'd say no.
While the ThinQ app effectively makes these smart speakers, if you don't have a compatible TV, there's no sense in making the investment. The reality is, all three pieces is going to run you $1500 (the speakers are $249 each, plus $999 for the H7). That's a big commitment on top of the C5 (or possibly G5) display that you already went into debt over. Add to it a less-than-ideal configuration experience, and I'm a hard "maybe" when it comes to this system. And certainly as a standalone speaker, it just wouldn't make sense.

I had been looking for a new sound system for my man cave. The room I have set up is not normally shaped and it’s not possible to set up rear speakers in the normal positions. I was very intrigued by this flex connect system and thought this new technology might be the answer I was looking for.
Out of the box, these feel like very solid and well-made speakers. They have a cool design that would blend in to most homes. They are a little bit larger than your typical rear speaker, but they are not overly large by any means.
I have 2 of these M5 speakers paired with the new LG H7 sound bar. Once you get the main sound bar set up, you can easily connect these as rear speakers in the app. I believe they can also be connected to any of the 2005 LG TV’s as well without having to use a sound bar. Once all of the devices are paired in the app, these can be set up using the flex connect system. Meaning that you should be able to place them just about anywhere in your room, and once you go through the tuning process in the app, it will figure out where the speakers are placed in your room and tune them so that you will get the best immersive experience possible.
In the app you simply tell it what speakers you want to use as part of your flex connect system, and then select to tune it to your space. It will then play some audio tones through all of the speakers for about 20-30 seconds to tune the speakers and create a map of where things are placed in your space. It will even show a cool little map of where it believes the speakers are in your room, and I found it to be pretty accurate.
Once I got everything set up, I put on some good action movies that had Atmos sound to test things out. I found these speakers did a great job of enveloping you in complete 360-degree sound. It filled in a lot of the gaps from the rear as well as high and low as well that the sound bar could not fill in as easily. Watching movies with helicopters flying around, or during a heavy rain storm with thunder and lightning really sounded like you were in the middle of the action. For my space I have to have one speaker basically right behind me, and another one was off to the right-hand side. The flex connect system did a great job of managing the audio and it sounded perfect in my space. I thought the speakers sounded good and even added a little more bass to the system that I wasn’t getting from the sound bar. Its not like a subwoofer, but it definitely made the sound a little fuller than just by using the sound bar alone.
So, if you have a not so usual space that you are looking to fill with some amazing, immersive, Atmos sound; the flex connect system might just be the answer you are looking for!
