Great Smart Lock without advertising it to others

When I installed my first Smart Lock, there were only a couple prominent players in this market. I went with August and along the way I installed a second August lock and also a Level lock. I also installed a Wyze Lock at my parents' place and they enjoy having it. I have installed a handful of the 1st Gen Wyze Cams at my parents' house. Then I installed a handful of the 2nd Gen Wyze Cams at my own house. So when I started looking for another smart lock for the door to my garage, I gravitated towards Wyze since I was already invested into their ecosystem and I was already familiar with their product at my parents' house. I was pleasantly surprised that I could get the Wyze products at Best Buy. They weren't available when I was looking a couple years ago. Nowadays, I look for the following in Smart Locks. First, I look for a retrofit kit. I don't feel like advertising that I have a Smart Lock from the outside of my house. Since the Wyze Lock uses your existing deadbolt and only replaces the inside throw lever, this means that you can still use your own key and the exterior doesn't give off any indication that a smart lock controls the lock. 5 years ago, August was the only player that fit my retrofit requirement, therefore, I paid quite a bit to have that functionality back then. This brings me to my second point. Wyze has a reputation for disrupting their markets with quality, affordable products. This Wize Smart Lock is nearly 50% of the price of an August Lock. Third point, what ecosystem does it belong to. It seems every time I buy a new Smart Device, I need to have a different app to control it. Neither August nor Level have expanded past the Smart Lock Market, but Wyze has expanded to several markets. That means that I can have 1 app that manages my Wyze Cams and my Smart Locks and that's a relief. I grabbed the Wyze keypad along with the Wyze Smart Lock because I like the convenience of keyless entry, but it doesn't mean that I can't lock the handset, just the deadbolt. Even the Wyze Keypad is less than 50% the cost of the August equivalent. So choosing the Wyze system was a no-brainer for me. Installation caught me by slight surprise. Even though I chose to set up the Smart Lock first, it started walking me through the Gateway installation first. The Gateway is a plug in adapter to bridge the Bluetooth and Wifi connections. It was a quick setup and it requires a 2.4 ghz network. Since I have a mesh network setup, I was concerned that I would have to temporarily disable my 5 ghz network, but the Wyze system handled it well. Installation of the lock was straightforward. The basic instructions in the Wyze app walked you sufficiently through the task, however, if you need more detail, the app is ready to provide you a deeper understanding of the process along the way. Installation went very smooth and setup in the application went quickly and easily. Automatic locking via timer works well. I set it for 5 minutes and it executes that well. Auto unlock is not something I desire at this time. I had this set up with my August lock at one point and if I came in through another door, it would still unlock. Or sometimes my phone wouldn't connect quick enough and I would be waiting several seconds before it connected. You can set one master key code and that works well. Then you can set several guest codes and set parameters or revoke the codes as needed. Overall, the Wyze Smart Lock with the added keypad is a great combination. The functionality is where I need it to be and the pricing is affordable. It's at a point where I am considering replacing my August and Level lock sets to Wyze Smart Locks.

A smart lock that makes sense!

Smart locks are a smart home tech that I resisted for years. There are lots of options now on the market but the Wyze is a fantastic choice and one I can recommend easily to anyone looking for a smart lock. Here's what I love about it. 1. Install was easy. This device works with your existing deadbolt. You replace the interior thumbturn on your lock with this device. Remove a couple of screws, install the mounting plate, then attach the Wyze lock. If you have trouble, the app will show you details on how to do everything. The magnetic cover on the Wyze lock makes it easy to change batteries if you need to. Total install time was less than 5 minutes, then I downloaded the app and finished the set up. 2. The app. The app was very easy to use. The set up process makes sense and the controls are intuitive. You can configure guest access for everyone in your family to access the lock from their smartphone. You can also set up a variety of alerts and settings--which are helpful and not overwhelming. For instance, I turned off the setting to auto lock the lock when the door closes (which is enabled by default). Making this change was in a place in the app that made sense...which is high praise considering how complicated some smart locks can be. The app also allows you to see a history of when the door was locked and unlocked (and by who if done with the app or the pin pad). 3. Add-ons. We also have a numeric touch pad to allow access without a phone. This is a fantastic add on and almost a must have to this product. 4. Keep your exterior aesthetic. This only replaces the inside of deadbolt, so it doesn't look like you have anything installed from outside. So why did I give it four stars instead of five? A couple little things. 1. Color. This is a personal thing, but the Wyze lock only comes in silver. It'd be great to have changeable faceplates/thumbturns or a choice of color when purchasing. 2. This is only the deadbolt control. If you're like me, you have a handset lock on your door as well. This means that you could potentially be locked out if the handset gets locked. For years our habit has been to lock the handset as we leave (because we don't have to use a key to lock it). Old habits die hard, so we may inadvertently lock ourselves out if we don't also have a key to it. All said, it's still worth buying this. It's easy to set up, easy to use, and does a great job.

I really like this lock. Got it for my parents home. Codes are easy to setup. Love that it can be set to auto lock and that you can use current keys. Did not give it 5 stars because you can't lock or unlock from anywhere. I also have the Wyze doorbell.

    The mounting bracket is cheap

The mounting bracket is cheap and broke while attaching the the door. It consistents of thin metal washers that block the eye holes into the deadbolt. Someone could walk up and jerk your deadbolt on the front and it would tear it right off. Then they could manually open your front door. Who thought that was a good idea?? Such a simple thing disrupts the whole integrity of the lock. Returning asap.

Nice retrofit style smart lock upgrade

I have a smart deadbolt I got for my front door and liked the ability to go out with out my keys so much that I decided to upgrade my side door as well. One thing I didn’t like about the other brand I had is that it doesn’t seem to line up perfectly and the door doesn’t always unlock right unless you put pressure on the door as you use the deadbolt. This setup doesn’t replace your whole lock, so it is better/easier to install. Installation took around an hour, but I also got the keyless pad so that was part of the reason. My install location didn’t really have a good place for the keypad so it took a bit to install. Operation of the lock is easy and smooth. I only really cared about the keyless entry but I’m liking all the smart features. I especially like the ability to manage everything, including the lock status without going to the door. Our side door is in the garage and its nice to not have to walk all the way out there to check if it is locked. I do use the auto-lock feature, but my kids don’t always shut the door properly, so it can’t lock itself if the door isn’t fully closed. This lets me verify everything quickly and easily. I really like how thoughtful the developers were and created things like “trash mode” so that you can set up an autolock feature and still do quick things around the house without worrying about getting locked out accidentally. The geofencing feature is convenient so I don’t have to pull out my phone or type in a code, but since I do have the keypad, its less necessary. My biggest complaint for the device is the gateway. I understand why they have one and the additional features they can have because of it, but it wasn’t convenient to find an outlet that wasn’t already in use that was close enough to the door to get a clear signal. I found that the connection was a little week between the door and the gateway so it really had to be pretty close. Since this was on a garage side door, my options were a bit more limited. Overall I like this unit and would recommend it to a friend.

We recently replaced our previous front door "smart lock", with a different brand's smart lock system. So far, it's working well for us and we are beyond pleased. Which is why, when this Wyze Bluetooth and WiFi Enabled Smart Lock became available, we decided to give it a try, this time on the entry door leading from our house into the garage. There are comparable similarities between the smart lock we now have on our front door, and this Wyze Smart Lock. Both have their own app which lets you monitor activity and customize the smart lock's settings. The Wyze App allows you to give remote access to family members via assigned personal keypad codes, as well as, get notifications of when the door has been opened or closed. Features that provides an additional sense of security. Setting up this Wyze's 'Gateway' and installation of the smart lock itself was familiar, since we'd done much the same procedure when installing our other smart door lock. As long as you take your time and follow the step-by-step instructions in the app, it's a relatively straightforward process. Adapters are included to use with your existing deadbolt's inner latch mechanism, as this Wyze Smart Lock works with your current lock and keys. A feature that my husband likes, but which I do not, is the auto lock/unlock feature. I'm just not at all comfortable using that, even though it theoretically should be unlikely to get locked out of the house without a key, because the Wyze Wireless Keypad would allow entry as long as you know an access code (and the batteries aren't depleted). Based on my own experience, I will say that I'm quite impressed with this wireless smart lock technology, and the level of home security I feel it provides.

The Wyze wifi smart lock enters into the crowded market smart locks and, in my opinion, it succeeds! It is nice to be able to use your own existing lock. Nobody really wants to change out keys for existing doors in their home. What is even better is that the lock, from the outside, will appear to be normal to the average viewer. The build quality of the lock feels very robust. It is metal and has a nice weight to it. It is battery operated by four AA batteries. Those are included in the package with the lock. Also included are various mounting hardware items. The package also includes a plug-in wifi adapter. I was worried at first because the package doesn't include instructions for the install. It simply points you in the direction of the phone app. Once the phone app is downloaded and your Wyze account is made the app walks you through the complete setup of the Wyze smart lock. I had no issues during setup of the wifi adapter or the lock. The two communicated together with ease. The only hiccup I ran into was during the "calibration" stage, where it instructs you to open and close the lock manually. After a few attempts the lock passed calibration. A firmware update was available after the setup was complete. That only took a few minutes. Now, I can unlock my door with my phone or my key! The app has some really cool features as well. There is a history of all the lock/unlock events. You can even set rules for the lock. For example, if you wanted the lock to unlock automatically when you arrive at home you could make it do that! This is a great lock with great features! If you are looking for a smart lock, look no further, the Wyze lock is where it's at!

Our household is slowly being converted to all smart door locks. Why? Because we're tired of having to worry about whether we locked the door or not, and tired of having to worry whether we left the keys in the house or not! With a smart lock you remember either your app, or remember your PIN. Having installed a few smart locks already, installation on this model was a breeze, minus the time that I mis-read the instructions and had to back-track a few steps - not the fault of the documentation IN THE LEAST - rather, mine - it was hot out, and I was rushing. The big difference with this lock versus others that I have installed is that it is not a door knob/handle - it only interfaces with the deadbolt. You will need to have a working knob/handle (regardless whether or not you use a lock in said knob/handle) in addition to a cut-out for a deadbolt in the door/frame. After installation I was able to use the app to access the door all I wanted - now to install the keypad (sold separately) so I can just punch in a numeric code!

Wyze wifi and App enabled Smart door lock is an affordable smart door lock that works great! I replaced my 8 year old keypad door lock and I am never going back. First, installation was super easy. This fits right in with your existing deadbolt on the inside and connects to the wifi via the included gateway hub that plugs in to any nearby outlet. Once that is connected to your wifi, easily accomplished in a couple minutes through the step by step on the app, you then connect the smart lock to the gateway and you're in! From the app you can adjust the settings how you want such as locking or unlocking from the app, how long to wait before the lock auto locks, location settings so the lock knows when you get home to unlock for you, and the ability to unlock remotely. You can lock and unlock through the app, track when the lock was locked or unlocked, and know your battery life. It comes with Duracell batteries that I'll swap out for rechargeable when dead. The battery location is just under the cover which is held on magnetically so you can just pop it on and off so easily. If you forget to change the battery and they die, you can still lock and unlock manually and using your normal key. Another option I highly recommend is the separate keypad for those times you can't or don't feel like pulling out keys or pulling out your phone or are not connected location wise for the door to open for you. As far as location tracking to unlock for you, I found that a very neat feature. So far when I have gotten home, by the time I walk from my car to the front door and go to grab the handle, it has either just unlocked or is unlocking. Its really cool. Everything feels solidly made, easy installation, multiple ways to lock and unlock and for a very reasonable price. Win! Love it. Highly recommended

I was ecstatic to have acquired this lock. Installing it was a breeze. It comes with universal pieces to fit your current deadbolt. All you have to do is unscrew your current deadbolt lock, add the universal piece that fits your deadbolt and insert it on the Wyze lock. The Wyze lock then goes over your existing deadbolt. The Wyze gateway takes up one outlet which wasn't a big deal but it was cause for some concern. I was worried that somehow someone could perform a man in the middle attack and gain access via that gateway. Worrying about those concerns, Wyze as a company, and the negative reputation they've acquired during the cusp of Covid-19, I had to make sure that all was well with the company before allowing mechanical/automotive control over the lock in my home. My concerns were addressed when I saw their publications about the security surrounding their devices and I was relieved to see the transparency. Albeit it still scares me, I enjoy the lock opening and closing itself automatically. As to the auto unlock feature, it doesn't always work. I've been trying to 'jingle' the app when I get close to the door to see if it makes a difference and it takes up to 20 seconds while I'm at the door in order for it to open. It's a huge game changer because I live on the second floor and going up with groceries can be a pain if both of your hands are taken by bags and your phone is in your pocket. It was a bummer that the feature, in my experience, isn't always working. Regardless the lock works wonderfully, I would still recommend this to anybody with an already existing Wyze army of devices. It's seamless and easy.

This is the easiest way I have ever automated anything in my house. I open the box, put the components in and is functional within minutes. I hardly even used the manual. Hardware installation is very basic and it easily adapted to our 30 year old lock. Just take the back off, and replace it with the Wyze lock. The screws included were too short for my thick door—but hey—this lock system is flexible enough that my previous long screws fit just fine. App set up is easy too. At first I had questions like, did I install it right—because there seems to be some weird clicking when I turn the lock. But I just followed what the app guide told me, especially at calibration, and the lock works perfectly. I don’t even know how it does it—like lock automatically when the door closes. I guess that’s the magic that happens at step-by-step calibration. This is such a great addition to the door and I don’t know why I only got this now. Maybe because I thought it will take too much to set it up—when it is actually so easy. I can leave the house without having to lock the top—and it gives me peace-of-mind that the house is locked because of the auto lock feature. Also, gone are the times I second guess if I have locked the door, because the app is there and I can see if I did lock it—and remotely lock it if I miss it. Luckily (lockily?) I haven’t missed locking it—but I guess I will never have to worry about that from now on. No-brainer product. I definitely recommend.
