Happy with the Yale Assure 2 Bluetooth Smart Lock

This is the first smart lock I've ever purchased, and overall I like it so far. It was easy to install, not much more difficult than a traditional deadbolt. Opted for the bluetooth-only option, because it shouldn't have hacking vulnerabilities that may come with Wifi-enabled devices. I also like that it doesn't have a physical key backup...if the battery dies you can just touch a 9V battery to the bottom so that you can enter your passcode, gain entry, and then replace the batteries. The black color matches our doorknobs/hardware. I like that it has auto-lock and un-lock features based on your phone location, although my one complaint is that these features don't seem to work seamlessly every single time.

MODEL REVIEWED
YALE - ASSURE LOCK 2, KEY-FREE PUSHBUTTON LOCK WITH BLUETOOTH - SATIN NICKEL
MODEL:YRD430-BLE-619
HEADLINE:
EASY AND WELL MADE BLUETOOTH DOOR LOCK
OVERVIEW
The ASSURE LOCK 2 is a basic (in a good way) Bluetooth Door Lock with keypad and wireless entry. Having installed more complicated “everything” locks it was nice to get a kit that was focused on the lock first and bells and whistles second. The Yale lock is first and foremost a great lock. It is very heavy duty with extra long screws for added deadbolt security. I like that it takes easy to replace AA batteries, which can be replaced in seconds, instead of charging brick that takes 6 hours to charge. It was easy to install, just like replacing any deadbolt lock.
PROs
• Well built
• Everything is included you might need for hardware
• Focus on Lock First
• Expandable for more advanced options is you want
CONs
• Square pad is a little industrial looking, but fine.
INSTALLATION
Really, there was nothing to the installation, it was really easy. There is even a handy guide and ruler, that has you check various measurements in your door before you start. In my case I was replacing and existing lock, so it was all good to go.
APP SETUP
The Bluetooth setup was really easy. I also did not want to install the “smart sensor” that tells the app if the door is open or closed. After the app was set up, it found the lock and updated the firmware which only took a few minutes. Then I went to my user profile and changed the pin code to what I wanted for my lock, saved and was all set.
In my case, I’ll probably only use the app for changing the code or creating a guest account. I could have it auto unlock the door when I get close, but I’ll just use a code as half the time if I’m working in the garage, I put my phone down somewhere else.
SUMMARY RECOMMENDATION
If you just want a good dependable lock without all the bells and whistles, then I highly recommend the YALE - ASSURE LOCK 2. If you want the advanced features like WIFI for Google or Alexa, you can optionally upgrade with an optional smart module when you are ready.

This installed fairly easy & I prefer these type of locks because you can still get in using the doorknob, the lock this replaced locked immediately behind you & had no doorknob. I would’ve preferred the touchscreen version but this one works fine, the numbers don’t light up but they’re easy to push. We did not have an existing deadbolt hole so we had to make one. This is designed to fit in existing deadbolt hole. Separate codes can be created for family or friends. Plays a cute little tune when it opens. We have the same lock in touchscreen Nest version & this works just as well minus some features. No key is needed to enter. It looks good too. Wifi module is available separately. The only thing I wasn’t impressed with is that we have this installed on our detached garage entry door & I tried to unlock it from inside the house using the app but was unable to do so. It seems like you have to be outside a few feet away or right in front of it to unlock using the app. That was its only issue though, nice to have the added security.

I’ve always wanted to try a smart lock and have considered getting a few in the past. The Yale Assure Lock 2 seemed to fit the bill for what I wanted out of a smart lock and the final result is good, but I had a few bumps along the way. I’ll present my overall verdict on the Yale Assure Lock 2 first and then go into detail if you decide to stay for the full review. Let’s go!
The Yale Assure Lock 2 comes in a few versions, the one I reviewed was the Bluetooth variant with a physical keypad in satin. The fit and finish of the deadbolt and the keypad look top notch and the locking mechanism is smooth and sturdy. The keys feel great to press and installing the optional DoorSense allows you to program the door to auto-lock after you close it. The instructions in the box do not match the instructions on the app, so be careful when drilling your holes and taking measurements. The Yale Access app needs an overhaul as it’s old and buggy. Installation may take a little work if you don’t already have a deadbolt or have a non-standard deadbolt as I did. Overall this lock has a lot going for it but may be a bit expensive considering that an additional wireless module is needed in order to truly control this lock remotely and use all its functions.
I was excited when I received the Yale Assure 2 and started my installation, only to become less thrilled after finding out that my deadbolts did not have a strike plate cut out, only a single hole install as some contractors like to do for speed. After finding some wood chisels and forging the area for the strike plate that is required to install the Yale Assure 2, I was finally ready to get it mounted and activated.
I followed both the installation on the Yale Access app and the paper manual that came with the lock, only to find that the 2 differed. For instance, the DoorSense magnet stated it needed a ⅝ inch hole on the paper manual, but on the Yale app, it stated a ½ inch hole. Well, it turned out to need a ⅝ inch hole. Make your own measurements before trusting any of the instructions as they may be off for you as well.
After removing my existing deadbolt and carving out a place for the strike plate of the new lock, I was able to screw everything in and get the unit mounted on the door. The mounting and installation of the actual keypad and deadbolt are fairly simple and for standard doors, this shouldn’t take very long. You can also mount the DoorSense without drilling, but I wanted to have a flush installation, so I took the extra time and went that route.
After getting everything mounted and inserting the included 4 AA batteries, the Yale Access app will find your door lock and guide you through the setup where it does, well, nothing really. It sets up the door to allow you to unlock and lock it via Bluetooth via your phone and that’s it. You’ll have to venture out into the app on your own to set up different PIN codes for different people, only to have the app crash or throw up error messages for reasons I still don’t understand. Setting up the DoorSense module took 3 times before it actually stated it was activated and didn’t just decide to try to lock itself when the door was wide open.
Okay, so eventually after restarting the app a few times I was able to set PINs for different family members and set up the DoorSense to automatically lock after the door was closed for a set period of time. That feature is stellar and I really like knowing at least an attempt will be made to lock the door when my kid leaves for school because she won’t make any attempt. You may have better luck with the Yale Access app, but I don’t find it fun to use and tend to avoid it when I can. Instead, I set up Apple HomeKit to control the remote lock/unlock of the door when I need to do it myself. This brings me to my next gripe.
This is not a cheap door lock by any means, so when Yale limits its functionality of it by not providing the WiFi module in the box it makes me a little sad. Please note that a few features, like being able to remotely let someone in when you’re not home and remote monitoring of your door are not available unless you buy an additional WiFi module that installs above the battery compartment of the lock. This isn’t a deal breaker for me, but it may be for some people, especially those that want to fully automate their door lock. Even in my small rancher, I’m unable to operate the door from the backyard or my master bedroom. This is due to the limited range of Bluetooth and the wireless module would fix this issue.
There are a few other weird omissions from Yale, such as not providing a rechargeable battery pack for the unit and not being clear about how to open the deadbolt if the batteries die when you’re away. I’m still not sure how to get in, but I’m thinking it may involve shorting out some pins that are at the bottom of the keypad. I honestly don’t know, but I should probably find that out before it does happen. I’m going to assume the lock will chirp or give you some sort of indication that the batteries need to be replaced, but again the Yale Access app really didn’t cover that during the installation.
Overall the Yale Assure 2 does a good job at being a lock with a keypad that has a few extra features provided by its Doorsense technology and Bluetooth connectivity, but if you’re wanting a truly automated door lock I’d go ahead and get yourself the model that comes with the wireless module as you’ll most likely end up buying it for this lock in order to fix some of its shortcomings.

Seems to be good quality. Easy to install. Convenient. Find it better than using a key. I did it difficult to see the numbers at night until you push the first button.

Perfect Solution for Simple Smart Lock

Works as advertised. Just be sure to check the specifications to ensure you get the features you want. This lock does not have wifi so it does not work with smart home services. It also does not work remotely using the app. If you only need something for local access, this is a great choice. One more note...installation was easy but you have to read and follow all of the directions. It is easy to put parts in upside down or not adjust for your door which will cause problems later in the install.

This product is fairly easy to install and set up. I've had zero issues and nearly two years and I'm a big fan of this lock over others that I've tried. The auto unlock when you near your home is a wonderful feature

Replaced my side door garage door with this new lock. Easy to install and it’s my 3rd one. Control each lock in your nest Yale app. Can’t go wrong.

The lock was very easy to set up it has a premium feel to it and overall I'm satisfied with the purchase. The only thing that I didn't realize is that in order to use the smart functions like being able to use your Google Assistant and notifications about when the door is open and closed you have to have a Wi-Fi module that is sold separately in order to get those features. I did buy this lock on a deal of the dale sale as well.

Works great. Instructions need to be followed CLOSELY! One complaint: App had some difficulties loading software updates and had to be attempted multiple times. . Once properly installed, you’ll love it.

This lock replaced the yell assure lock with the built-in Wi-Fi connection. Repeated problems with that lock. This is the simpler version that does not require as much battery power to operate which means batteries last much longer. It’s a good luck. The Wi-Fi was nice but changing batteries every 3 to 4 weeks was irritating. This one did not get four stars because I had to call customer service to get it to work when I installed it. Yale does have great customer service with real people who know how to answer questions and get problems resolved. it was also a tremendous price on this lock

Got this Lock to put on my bedroom door and the assembly wasn’t too bad. The directions could have been a little more clear but like I said it wasn’t too bad. I specifically bought the Bluetooth enabled ones in case my Wi-Fi was ever out that way I could still get in my room. The only problem that I’m having is the code and when I try to type it in though it doesn’t let me into my bedroom sometimes, but it does have a really neat feature where once you get into a certain perimeter of your bedroom, where the lock is either your phone or your Apple Watch will unlock it, which is a nice Feature.
