Easy Setup and WiFi Upgrade, App Could be Better

I have been using the Yale Assure Lock 2 at home and with my family for several weeks. This is my first smart lock, even though I have upgraded nearly everything else in my home to something 'smart' over the past several years. The lock is easy to setup, out of the box you have the external keypad, the rear compartment/driving mechanism that holds the battery and (optional) WiFi module, and a variety of striker plates and attachments so you can fit everything to your door/door frame. Fitting to my (wooden) door and door frame took a little over an hour, most of the time was spent making sure the lock was able to open and close smoothly. I probably could have got it done faster, but this is my first time ever installing a proper door lock and I was a little extra cautious. The lock works as either left or right locking, which is nice. The Yale lock uses 4xAA batteries (included) and the WiFi module slots in easily above the battery compartment. I like that the WiFi module is separate, it means you can (theoretically) upgrade to a better/faster WiFi module or open standards (should a module become available) without losing your lock. Once installed, the rest of the setup and use is all done via the Yale App. The app isn't bad, but my initial experience was not great. It randomly crashed twice on my iPhone and there were some odd bugs where trying to add users or unique access codes/PINs failed. It has been a few weeks now and things have stabilized and across my partner and kids we've had no issues and hard to isolate why the app was misbehaving. I like that everyone can have their own code, you can also set 1 time codes for guests, etc. Worth knowing (not that I used it) but the Yale App also has a standalone function for AirBNB in case you plan to use the lock that way. There's no backup key option, if the battery goes flat, you can use a 9V battery to temporarily power the lock. I have mixed feelings on this and kind of wish I had the key version - because who really carries around a 9V battery? Given the minor app issues I experienced I can't give it 5 stars. I like the lock and trust Yale from a security point of view. I have now shifted the lock to our garage side access door and now plan to get the keyed version for my front door later this year.

The lock is great otherwise but will not pair with Apple Home which was the main selling point for me. I’ve contact support but have not heard back. I’ve tried everything I could find online, different devices etc, no go. Hopefully a future update will correct the issue.

I have been using the Yale - assure lock 2 for a few weeks now. The version of the lock I am using is the key-free touchscreen lock with the wi fi module. When I first opened the box, I thought to myself, this thing might be more complicated than I want to tackle. Don't worry, it really is simple to install. I think what made me think this was going to be complicated was the fact that this lock comes with multiple adapters to fit different size doors. One you eliminate the parts you don't have to have to work on your door, instillation is extremely straight forward. first things first, you do have to have an opening for a dead bolt lock above your door handle. Just remove the existing dead bolt lock, find the adapters that fit your particular size door and follow the included instructions. Once installed, download the app and follow the instructions to set up your wi fi enabled door lock. You will set a master pin and go through the process of connecting to your wifi and you are pretty much set. This lock is also bluetooth enabled and will use whichever connection is the best when you use the app to lock or unlock the door. Along with the master pin, you can create additional unlock pins that can be assigned to individuals. If you have kids or a housekeeper, you will be able to determine who is entering the house by know what pin is being used. This lock will also prevent you from giving out extra keys to individuals that you want to have temporary access. Remember, keys can be copied. You can always delete their access code. I have not had any issues with the lock and am seriously wondering why I didn't install this lock five years ago when I built my house. It is really a great product.

Discreet with a Multitude of Features

Smart locks seem to be becoming more and more prevalent and I feel like we are finally getting to the point where they are now becoming a must buy. This lock by Yale has finally been able to give us a nice discreet appearance with all of the smart features you could possibly need all packed into an app with an easy to use user interface. Firstly, right out of the box you can tell it is a quality product as it is not made of simply cheap plastic and has that premium feel. I love the look of this lock as it is extremely discreet compared to the multitude of other smart locks out there. I think this is predominantly due to the key-free aspect of the lock as it eliminates the cylinder, which is preferred for me personally as it results in a more secure lock. The touchscreen works extremely well and the branding is nice and discreet. The ability to tap the logo on the lock to light up the screen is a nice feature to have at night as well. After getting it unboxed the installation was a breeze! I have installed a couple smart locks at this point and some are much easier than others and I will definitely say that this lock is definitely at the top of the list for ease of install. Then getting the app downloaded and connected to the lock was again just as easy. Again, the ease of setup always seems to be a major hurdle when it comes to smart devices to which I really feel like Yale has focused on this, both when it comes to the actual door hardware and software component within the app. After the quick setup I was finally able to play with the app some and discover all of the things that this lock allows you to do. The first thing I have to mention though is the user interface of the app as it is extremely straightforward and allows you to quickly get to what you are looking for. The features on this lock are all here including your basic key-free access which can be through the keypad, through the app (both on your phone or smartwatch), with voice assistant, and also through the auto-unlock feature which in my opinion is the most convenient and seamless as you don`t have to mess with the keypad or the app. Also within the app the ability to see if the lock is locked or unlocked is a feature that provides peace of mind both when at home and away. The final item I have to mention is the ability to setup temporary codes in the app as this is extremely helpful when you may be out of town or away because the app also provides a log that allows you to see when those temporary codes were used or you can even receive alerts as well. Overall, the discreet appearance of this lock along with the multitude of ways to unlock and lock the lock really set this smart lock apart from its competitors. The ability to provide temporary codes and see an activity feed of not only those temporary codes, but all activity is also a much appreciated feature. I don`t really know what else is left to be desired of a smart lock and for that reason I would not hesitate to recommend this smart lock!

A Wonderful Product With A Serious Issue

This is one of those reviews that is somewhat difficult to write. On the one hand, the Yale Assure Lock 2 Key-Free Wi-Fi Deadbolt is absolutely wonderful. It works exactly as it should, is extremely well-built and engineered, constructed out of the highest quality materials, and is quite aesthetically pleasing. But on the other hand, the app and software are dreadful, almost guaranteeing the set up and installation will be absurdly difficult. However, I did not get this for the app/software, so I will focus my attention on its functionality, durability, and looks. But I must point out at least one more major flaw in the app. The app contains a notification function. This is supposed to notify you anytime the deadbolt is opened or closed. However, the only time this worked for me was when the Yale app was actually opened on my phone. If the app is closed, I received zero notifications. So if someone were able to somehow unlock the deadbolt, I would never know if the app was not up and running on my phone. There are a million different manufacturers of exterior house doors and lock systems. I guess it would be unreasonable to expect that there would be one, and only one, set of measurements to use when cutting out hole patterns. Some use 2" holes, others use 1 3/4", and others use whatever they feel like coming up with. This sometimes makes buying and installing new door locks and deadbolts a nightmare. Thankfully, the Yale fit my door perfectly straight out of the box. As far as the hardware installation goes, installing the Yale Assure was surprisingly quite easy. If you have ever installed a deadbolt before, this will be a piece of cake. The most important part is simply making sure everything is lined up and straight. The last thing you want is a crooked panel. Although the app and Door Sense software are insufferable, connecting to wi-fi and pairing the deadbolt were surprisingly easy. So, after getting it installed and connected, it was time to actually try it out. This is where the Yale shines brightly. I am able to lock and unlock the deadbolt from anywhere. If someone comes home or wants to visit and I'm not there, all I have to do is unlock the door from the Yale app. If, for some reason I forget to deadbolt the door when I leave, I can use the app to lock the door. It is that easy. I can't describe how wonderful it is to NOT have to carry door keys around in my pocket any more. It's such a step of freedom. I don't have to search for keys, I don't have to worry about leaving the house key in my jacket pocket which I happened to leave on the coat rack at work...I am truly key-free. AND, if I happen to leave my phone somewhere, not to worry, all I have to do is enter the entry code I programmed into it, and the deadbolt opens right up. It's wonderful! Final Analysis: If Yale can overcome the major deficiencies in the software side of the Yale Assure Keyless Wi-Fi Deadbolt, it will have a product that is absolutely top-of-the-line, both in function and looks. Although I was tempted to rate this a lot lower, my decision to give it 4 stars is based solely on the looks and functionality of the deadbolt. In spite of the app issue, I would still, without hesitation, recommend the Yale Assure Lock 2 Key-Free Wi-Fi Deadbolt lock to my friends and family.

Yale is likely the best brand is smart/electronic locks. The new Assure lock 2 does not disappoint. I have the WiFi enabled version in Satin. Setup and Installation: Overall, the set up is easy and the directions are easy to follow. Am I an advanced installer so for me I was done from unboxing to completion in less than an hour which was nice to see. Fortunately, I did not need to make any modifications to my door which makes a huge difference. They include extensive guides and videos to help you through the process. I did feel like the measurement guides and instructions could be more clear/better designed. Otherwise, I commend the easy process. Functionality: Pros -Easy to add users -AirBnB function if needed -PIN or direct access -Simple to use Cons -There is a sensor for auto-lock that detects the door is open or closed. I deducted a star for this because I went with the flush mount system and the lock inconsistently auto-locks the door. When I check the app, it shows the door is open or closed but for some reason it does not consistently auto-lock and now it doesn't at all. -If your door has the slightest offset the motor does not have the power to add a little extra force and you will have to hold it tight and assist. There should be improvement here. -There is no NFC communication so you have to GeoFence the auto-open which I don't prefer Yale constantly tracking my location. Design: Looks great, I enjoy the light up numbers. Inside portion is definitely better looking than most but still larger than some of the other brands. Overall: I would recommend this lock but there are some issues that could be improved on. It would also be nice to have included z-wave.

The Yale Assure 2 WiFi smart lock is a welcomed addition to my home. Not only is it a very functional smart lock, it is visually appealing too. Installation is fairly simple with basic tools if your door already has a dead bolt. If it doesn't, there are very clear instructions on how to make the necessary holes to install the lock. Fortunately my door was already provisioned with a dead bolt so Installation only took a few minutes. It actually took longer to setup the Yale smart lock in the app then it did for me to install it. This smart lock doesn't have a lot of bells and whistles, but it does everything you really need it to do, and it does it very well. The WiFi part allows you to unlock the door from anywhere, as long as you have your smart phone. One minor drawback to this lock is that there is no key for this lock. If your battery dies, Yale gives you and ingenious way you can unlock it from the outside if you run into this situation by using a 9 volt battery. This does allow you access, but how many of us carry around a 9 volt battery? Likes: 1.) Aesthetically pleasing to look at 2.) Easy install 3.) Companion app easy to use Dislikes: 1.) No key if battery dies.

It is so great having both security and ease of access rolled into one lock. I have a two year old child that has learned to use the locks and has taken to locking me out in the garage a few times. Luckily, I have had my keys on me the few times he has done it so I was able to get back inside, but I knew it was only a matter of time till he did it again when I did not have my keys on me. Enter the Yale Assure Lock 2, since I have my cellphone on me way more than I have my house keys, this was a great way to ensure that my son never locked me out again. Since the Yale Assure Lock 2 has wifi capabilities, I can use my cellphone to unlock the door or I can use the keypad to unlock it. The lock was very easy to install and if you can change a lock, you can install the Yale Assure Lock 2. Connecting the lock to my wifi was also very simple and straight forward. The whole process only took me about 20 minutes start to finish. I love having the peasce of mind knowing that I will never have to worry about getting locked out of my house or forgetting to lock the door on my way out ever again.

I installed this lock on my front door where I currently have a high security deadbolt (medeco, like Yale, also owned by Assa Abloy) on it with a keyed alike locking handle set. With my current lock, if we exit out of the front door and don’t carry a key, we would have to ask a family member to lock the deadbolt, the bottom handle set locks automatically. I was a bit concerned that this deadbolt wouldn’t work, as my front door requires a slight push (from the inside) to get the door to align so the deadbolt can latch into the other stationary door. It ended up working fine, the height and width of the deadbolt that slides into the other door is not as large as the Medeco deadbolt I replaced. Installation: Installation was easy since I was replacing a deadbolt. I simply removed the old one and installed the new lock. I didn’t install the DoorSense sensor, I would have to drill 2 small holes into my door and have this big white sensor on the inside of the door. Besides, it’s not like we often leave the door open unintentionally. Setup: With the lock installed, the app downloaded, I was able to get the lock setup. It went smoothly for the most part, I setup an account with the Yale Access app, the Bluetooth connected easily and I was able to add the lock to my “house” in the app. Initially, I did not have the Wi-Fi module installed. Without the wifi, I found the lock’s features weren’t really useful. For example, if I program the lock to notify me when someone locks or unlocks the door, I would have to be close enough for the Bluetooth to be connected. Usibility: The Assure 2 has many features and settings, smart alerts, auto-lock, auto-unlock, door ajar sensing (need to install sensor), and more. It’s also compatible with Apple HomeKit. I use the auto-lock feature, where if a family member fails to lock the deadbolt, it’ll automatically lock within the set time (2-30 mins) and the Smart Alerts, where you get a pop-up message on your phone when someone locks or unlocks the door. These settings need to be done with you physically close to the lock via Bluetooth connection. The auto lock feature works fine, while the Smart message didn’t work well for me, it seems to work only if I’m near the lock. I shared the unlock code with my family, they can simply unlock the door with the pin. I can also set it where the lock automatically unlocks as I walk up to the door. I can also unlock the lock using my Apple watch. If my family members wanted these features, they would need to download the app and setup their own account and login. I can probably just have them log in and I log into their phone, using my profile. After installing the Wi-Fi module, I can lock and unlock the lock from anywhere in my home or away from home, I don’t have to be within Bluetooth range. By the way, the Wi-Fi module operates on 2.4Ghz Wi-Fi band only. Conclusion: Overall, the lock is convenient to have in some ways, the biggest convenience is that we can lock the deadbolt without taking a key with us. In my situation, if no one else is home when I arrive home, I would have to carry a key for the handle set lock anyway (or enter via garage door), so swapping out the high security lock for the doesn’t make the most sense for me. Pros: 1. Smart lock, easily lock and unlock the door with your own custom code. 2. Smart notification features (door left open, someone locked or unlocked door). 3. Auto-lock after 2-30 minutes, in case family members forget to lock the door 4. Auto unlock if you’re nearby the lock. 5. With the Wi-Fi, I can unlock the deadbolt from anywhere. Cons 1. Notifications didn't always work.

The Yale Assure Lock 2 + Wifi by August smart deadbolt is not my first Yale, or August product. The original Yale Assure lock was one of the first smart home products I purchased when I bought my home, and has worked reliably for about 6 years now. One of the great unsung features of the Yale locks is they take regular AA batteries (4 of them). This may not seem like much, but it's a huge boon to not have to keep a supply of different sizes of lithium batteries on hand. Trust me, if you use a lock that requires those strange batteries, they will inevitably die on you at the worst time. With AAs, you probably already have some on hand to keep your lock operating smoothly. The charge drop off is also more gradual in my experience, so you can usually tell the lock is nearing battery replacement time even before it gives you the heads up through the app or with the audio warning, just from the sound of the motor. The new model the Assure Lock 2, improves the aesthetics on both sides of the door, while including a Wifi module that brings the Yale lock into the August app for easy connectivity via your phone, Samsung Smartthings, or other smart home ecosystems. Install was very easy. The Yale Assure Lock 2 completely replaces your existing deadbolt. While this might seem more daunting than products which only replace the inside part of your deadbolt, it actually doesn't introduce much more complexity and the hardware install only takes about 10 minutes for someone moderatly handy. The addition of the included door open/close sensor fixes the most ccommon problem that I have had with my first gen Assure lock (that lock required some non-standard programming with my Samsung Smartthings system to get it to work with an external door close sensor). The door close sensor is either extremely easy to install (you can just mount it to the surface of the door itself and leave it visible inside the home) or you can drill a small hole just above the deadbolt strikeplate on your frame to completely hide the sensor. Setup of the lock as a smart home product was exceptionally easy. There is a QR code included to set the lock up in your Yale app, and once set up I am able to control it via my Smartthings system (which has an August integration), the Yale app, or the August app. The Yale app goes through all the programming and calibration steps for you. If you haven't taken the leap to a smart door lock yet, definitely take the leap! My first smart lock from Yale made it so I never had to carry a physical key again, or give a copy friends or family when we were out of town. This new lock is an improvement on the original in every way.

I have 2 of these locks. Installation for both of them was difficult for the professional installer. The help desk had to be called for each installation. Having said that the lock itself appears to do exactly as promised. Easy to connect to Wi-Fi and it looks very nice. I’ve only had them for about 3 weeks so we’ll see what happens. Expect to do YouTube and maybe call Yale while installing. Not a quick install.
