My wife didn’t want a huge sub woofer in our living room so I went with this one, since they are built in. The sound quality is good. I have a large, open living area and the sound bar performs well. The bass is good enough for my needs but audiophiles will want to look elsewhere. I had no issue connecting to my network through the app. The sound profiles work well, especially clear voice. I connected through ARC and it has worked well for the most part. I did lose connection once and had to reboot but this may have been an issue with my Vizio TV. The Yamaha app is not intuitive and needs some work. We have it sitting on our tv console and it looks great.

The first sound bar I ever had was a Yamaha. Several years later I upgraded my TV and decided to get a new sound bar. I tried a Samsung, returned it. Then got a Vizio, kept it a couple years then it started getting glitchy. Wasn't bad but not great sound. So I decided to go back to the yamaha. I love it. The built-in subs don't thump, didn't expect that any way, but it does give the bar a nice rich full sound. And the clear voice is way better than the other two bars. After a couple of weeks I added an 8" 100W sub to it. And that gave me the extra punch I wanted. Not only tv and movies, but music sounds great too. With alexa built-in I was able to get rid of the echo I had in the living room. The app is is pretty basic and doesn't really do much. But it works. I would definitely recommend it. Plus it won't break the bank!

Awesome!!!! I love this soundbar; it sounds amazing! It was easy to set up. I added a Polk subwoofer to it and I’m in Heaven! I’m so glad my brother-in-law recommended for me to purchase this soundbar. I’ve gotten a lot of compliments.

Aug4, 2022 ~130pm, i picked up my yamaha YAS-109 at princeton,nj bestbuy, .. no one else was there for pickup but me,, and when the staff went back to get it,, while waiting,, i hear a loud bang and crash in the back .. and i immediately thought is that my package and wondered ,, will i now get a dented box and sure enough it was , as seen in my posted photo .. this is essentially a lightweight package as a soundbar, and wonder that a simple drop ,, would could cause such a dent in the corner of the box .. and because of the stiff foam protection, it takes a lot of force to make that kind of dent .. however,, of course,, i have absolutely no proof it was done on purpose ,, it is just that it happened as i was there to pick it up .. but i bet bestbuy has video of what goes on in that back room area ,, that will show exactly what happened .. but i just am wondering .. so when i got home ,, i made a video ,, as i opened the box and the yamaha soundbar shows no damage,, and when i hooked it up ,, it seem to be working fine as of now .. if not for this pickup situation ,, i would have written a more comprehensive review of this soundbar ..

This was purchased as a Christmas gift for my Son and his girlfriend. I usually don’t purchase audio equipment without listening to it first, but this model was not on display. They live in a small apartment where a base box would take up too much room, so I went with this one because Yamaha is a great brand. The kids said this soundbar is amazing and has great sound and fits nicely in their apartment.

So let's be honest, most folks unless they are in a small space or apartment would not consider a 2.1 channel compact soundbar for their primary home theater or TV set-up. However at this pricepoint, this soundbar is still an attractive option with solid Yamaha sound and Amazon Alexa extension functionality. Why buy an Echo spot for $50 when you can get a real competent soundbar in that guest room, kitchen or office attached to your TV? A few negatives, this unit is deeper/thicker than most soundbars. This is due to the subwoofer exhausts on the back of the unit, but that's why the unit is so big. The remote is pretty low-quality with an IR sensor that you see the bulb on. Barely functional although it is well laid out, you have to literally point it directly at the soundbar with nothing obstructing it. I couldn't get ARC to work correctly from my Hisense TV. Not a huge surprise and it may be partially my TVs fault since it had issues with my Vizio Soundbar as well, but ARC works perfectly and auto-switches to my Samsung soundbar with the same TV setttings and connections. I don't hold this against Yamaha so much but I simply could not get audio over HDMI ARC from the TV apps to the soundbar which was very frustrating. I set it to TV and it wasn't as obvious if the settings were correct or not. I didn't love the capacitive touch button settings on the unit itself, and the lights show the level of volume from left to right re-using function displays. Some positives: The sound is excellent! Fantastic for a smaller room, bedroom, kids play room. HDMI passthrough works perfectly and is also 4K capable. Would be amazing for a dorm room for TV and music since you can stream directly to it with Spotify or Alexa. Includes Alexa which is a huge boon for any smart device for Alexa users. One less other Amazon device in a room. No video of course, but maybe one day they'll have a native app like the Portal TV. Set-up was actually very fast and easy despite a large update. It went through without an issue. Only works on 2.4GHz networks but my mesh network has both 2.4 and 5GHz on the same SSID. Includes a template and doesn't require additional hardware to hang off the wall, it just hangs vertically, but this also includes its size and profile on the wall (its kinda fat). Overall a solid sound bar, I'm going to try it with ARC on my Samsung TV and see if it does better.

YAMAHA YAS-109 Soundbar with ALEXA I was pleasantly surprised by the easy setup and the very nice sound that the YAS-109 produces. It beats the sound of any flat panel TV I know, for a reasonable price. I switched back and forth between my TV, which advertised its superior sound, and the Yamaha YAS-109, and it was night and day. This significantly elevated my TV sound and recreate a movie theater experience in our large guest bedroom. Add in ALEXA features, the ability to play playlists from my phone, and App access to Spotify, Amazon Music and a few others sources and I feel like I got a bonus goodie bag along with a straightforward soundbar. SETUP: The Yamaha leaves a nice impression right out of the box. While it’s not especially heavy (7.5 lbs), it has a nice, modern, rounded design that sits fairly flush (projecting only 2”) from our wall. It looks great either under or over a wall-mounted TV. It will mostly disappear from view except for the small LEDs which confirm input or sound control changes. If your TV is still on its stand, you can simply lay the Soundbar in front of it. I did that during some of my pre-install period In the box is the 35” x 5.13” x 2.13” Yamaha Soundbar (measurements assume wall mount orientation), the small remote, a thin optical cable, power cable, a useful mounting template, and instruction guides. There are no mounting screws or HDMI cable, which you may need in order to exploit all the Yamaha Soundbar’s features. The VERY SIMPLEST SETUP: Mount on the wall or lay the Soundbar on a counter under your TV. Find the Optical Jack on your TV and connect the provided optical cable to the Soundbar. (Make sure you pop off those tiny protective shields at each end of the cable). Plug in the Soundbar to an outlet. Turn on your TV and go into your sound setting where you’ll turn off the TV SPEAKERS and select AUDIO SYSTEM or something similar. Turn on the Soundbar, increase the volume and you’re ready to hear movies as the director intended. There are a variety of sound fields, voice enhancement and subwoofer management. Play with the remote and modify sound all you want. But, there is a lot more with a little added effort. The FULL FEATURED SETUP: Do you want ALL those other voice managed and connection features in the YAMAHA YAS-109? Download the Yamaha Soundbar App from the iOS or Google Play store. You can connect ONE streaming or set-top box or game console directly to the Soundbar (HDMI cable). Connect your TV (ARC Input if possible) to the Soundbar with an HDMI cable. In order to use ALEXA, you need to either use the Ethernet connection or use wireless to connect the Soundbar to the internet. [I found that I needed to unplug my ethernet. I may talk to Yamaha about this.] PERFORMANCE: Because I like to have my new equipment playing within minutes, I did my VERY SIMPLEST SETUP and was watching a movie while I learned about enabling the more advanced Yamaha features. This is a nice sounding Soundbar, with a balance of sound which projected itself into the room. It was very difficult to tell where the sound was coming from at times, because it nicely filled this large bedroom location. Clean voice (which could be brought forward with the CLEAR VOICE button), detailed treble and rich bass. This is a great improvement over the TV’s best sound. The settings allowed a choice of sound fields, which I generally ignore. But, Yamaha is not over-the-top with its digital processing, so I found myself experimenting with all of them. I was really shocked by the bass. There is no extra bass module, but there is definitely extra bass when it’s called for by the program. Surprised me. Nicely done, Yamaha. I began the FULL FEATURED SETUP by downloading the Yamaha Soundbar App from the Apple store. I allowed the iPhone App to find the YAS-109 using my home wireless which needs to signed into upon initial install. This was fairly fast and new FIRMWARE (2.72 dated 2019-12-25) was installed. The APP provides all of the features of the remote control. But, the remote is limited to the sound fields, input selection and overall sound level as well as a separate subwoofer level. The phone APP opens up the world of the Internet and ALEXA. I found that I could directly select music from my iPhone music library, or select Spotify, TIDAL, etc, or go back to the TV output (remember to connect ARC output from the TV) or choose the device connected via the HDMI input of the Soundbar. I could request (using my voice) that ALEXA play music, and it offered music from the Amazon Music play. I could even specify (by voice) music selections. If I chose to play “My Music” the App let me survey my iPhone’s Playlists and select a song from my collection, directly. This was all fairly easy to master. Spotify Connect relies on the App on my phone, but the music is playing beautifully on the Yamaha Soundbar. The YAS-109 doesn’t work with Google Assistant. Although I primarily use Google Assistant to control lights. locks etc in my house, I wasn’t limited in any way using ALEXA to control the YAMAHA and call up music as I wanted. Those other ALEXA type features like weather, traffic and the news reports are all here. I will need to go explore some more. SUMMARY: Whew. Lots of features going on here. I wish Yamaha covered this more completely in the instructions, because I had quite a few trial and error moments which better instructions might have lessened. If you’re a novice looking for a simple Soundbar, the Yamaha YAS-109 can be quickly and easily set up. Don’t let my extended review frighten you away. You’re going to love it. If you see the usefulness of ALEXA and want to add a really great voice-controlled music source to a room, this Soundbar will easily outperform many standalone wireless speakers while practically disappearing in the room. And, who doesn’t want to be able to ask their TV wall to give them the weather or traffic on command? The price is nice and the features go on and on. Recommended.

I have been curious about what soundbars can bring to the table. It has been a while since I have invested in an entertainment system. Don’t get me wrong, we have fairly new 4k TVs, but the last time I purchased a sound system it involved a slew of speakers and having to run cables all over the room. I have loved the idea of one speaker that could simulate a surround experience. To start with the sound is not going to be the same as having a full surround, it comes about 60%-70% of the way there. Now, the benefit here is the ease of setup, very compact, and the price is more reasonable. Setup was pretty straightforward, plug into ARC port on the TV, then we plugged in our 4k FireTV stick into the soundbar. We had also tried to connect one of our AppleTVs. The AppleTV we have here is not the 4k version and that worked without any issues. Not the case with the 4k FireTV. The connection was simple enough, and sounds were great, but we had issues with the screen flickering black sporadically when watching content on the 4k FireTV. I tried different cables, restarting the stick, and nothing was working. I finally happened across a site that said to try adjusting the color depth. I had to bring it down to 10 bits and voila flickering ceased. After that, we have not had an issue whatsoever with the soundbar. The FireTV stick takes over controls for the soundbar so I can just use 1 remote to control everything. Being able to stream music from Spotify, and Amazon Music is great since we use both services. Music sounds amazing from it. Movies and TV shows sound great as well. We have the soundbar connected in our bedroom and it does a good job of separating and simulating that surround sound. We were watching a movie recently and I could have sworn the insect noises in the movie were coming from outside of our window, I had to pause the movie to verify that it was the movie. My only issue, and it's more if a nitpick is that the bass is a little lacking. There is a way to adjust it, and we have done so, but I think we will have to try to see about connecting a separated subwoofer to the soundbar. The soundbar does have built-in subs, and they do offer a little rattle when watching action movies, I was just hoping for a bit more. I could easily recommend this soundbar to anyone looking for a relatively inexpensive way of increasing their home theater experience. Just make sure to adjust your FireTV stick if you come across the flickering issue. The music streaming, Bluetooth connectivity, sound quality, and ease of use make this a very strong choice.

I'd like to kick this off with how much I enjoyed not having to get a sub woofer when it has built in subs and powerful ones at that! At first glance I was confused because the setup seemed almost to easy for me not to have another piece of audio equipment to pair with my device. Then I played some tunes from bands that usually stand my test for quality audio. I played some Elvis of course and I could hear the orchestra in the back, I played some Paramore and the 3-D sound was amazing. I didn't get to go to the Red Rocks show so this was an awesome feature to discover. The 3D feature fills the room in a different way, there isn't a way for me to describe how funky you ears feel at first and then you realize it's because it sound like the sound is coming from every angle. That brings me to the Bluetooth process which didn't take long to set up at all. The game room we have in this office is clean and neat so we wanted something that will compliment the room but still give great sound when company is over. I am astounded by this sound bar because I have had Yamaha speakers in cars but never in my house for TV and leisure. I don't need a sub woofer in this room but I predict that i'll be spending more time up stairs than I do downstairs now. So I might opt in for the sub just to spoil myself! I hope you enjoy it as much as I am.

Out of the box the sound bar has a heft and feel of quality that you would expect from a company such as Yamaha. On the sound front it delivers the depth of sound that you just don’t get from your TV set alone. Not having a separate sub, it won’t have the wall thumping bass if it had one, though you can add a sub if you need/want that. Though I’d like to have seen Bluetooth 5.0 (it has 4.2), streaming music was always consistent and stable. This is gonna be the bedroom, dorm room, or living room sound bar where the big booming sound is not needed or allowed for movies and music. The app, though it could use less steps to go here or there, really shines in my opinion. You can control and change everything within the app and not need the remote. Turn the sound bar on or off, change the settings, control the volume, sync the music on your device and control Alexa. Though I’m not the biggest user of Alexa, set up was extremely easy. Using Alexa, the sound bar detected me saying Alexa from 25 feet away. You have the ability to have Alexa always on or only listening when the sound bar is on. This is a huge plus to me for privacy reasons, and it’s easily changed in the app. Overall, this Yamaha sound bar delivers a solid value that doesn’t break the bank, but gives you depth for music and movies.

Sounds great! The base does a great job for a stand alone soundbar. Alexa works surprisingly well picking up your voice from wherever in the house. Bluetooth works great and connects easy and fast, pleasantly surprised how stable the connection is while walking around the house with the phone in my pocket. ARC hdmi (awesome). If you want the base that only a subwoofer can give you, then should probably get one. All around a great package soundbar...did I mentioned the price?!! Great price for what you get!

I’m hard of hearing and it’s hard for me to enjoy conversations, tv programs, or video games because I’m constantly missing some sort of sound that enriches the activity. When we set-up our house a number of years ago, we installed a 7.1 surround sound set-up in our living room simply for the purpose of enhancing my ability to hear simple dialogue in TV shows. It helps, but unfortunately, I can’t have that large of a set-up in every room of my house. That’s where this Yamaha sound bar comes into play. The sound bar is compact in size (only 3-feet in length) and it can be wall-mounted or set-up in front of your TV screen. Even though it’s only provides 2.1 channels of audio, the sound bar produces quite a powerful sound and it’s perfect for medium-sized rooms. The sound bar also supports most major audio codecs. The sound bar has a super quick set-up, but does not include an HDMI cable. It does support connection through an HDMI-ARC port on TVs and if you don’t have that port on your TV, you can use the included optical cable for audio. One downside to this particular sound bar is that it only works on a 2.4Ghz network. This isn’t that big of a problem for me because I have a dual-band wireless router in my home, but I feel like we are in a time that devices shouldn’t be limited to only 2.4GHz networks. Another weird outdated piece of technology that this sound bar has is that it utilizes Bluetooth 4.2 and Bluetooth 5.0 is the ‘new’ standard. One of the biggest features of this sound bar is that it is compatible with Amazon Alexa. Even though Alexa isn’t my virtual assistant of choice (Apple’s HomeKit is my primary virtual assistant ecosystem), I do have a couple of Alexa-compatible devices in my home. So, I connected it to Alexa and didn’t have any issues with using Alexa through the sound bar. This is a great option for a 2.1 sound bar. It’s moderately priced and has a lot of nice built-in features. People who want extra sound for their TVs will love adding this sound bar to their set-up because it’s so easy to install and it has a lot of extras with it.

Bought this as a present for my stepmother who could not make out the tinny frequency range of a flat panel TV, especially for voices, though it could get fairly loud. She was sure she did not want the boom and eyesore of a separate subwoofer, so finding a soundbar that did a good job projecting the midrange frequencies of most vocalizations was the task at hand. This one made her very happy, letting her hear conversations effortlessly at moderate volume, even without using her hearing aid. While the bass is full enough to fill in most TV programs, someone wanting weighted punch and rumble for special effects would do well to add a separate subwoofer via the existing port. Setup was easy with straight forward instructions and the necessary connectors included. There's nothing complicated in daily use, which suits her fine. The attractive slimline design fit easily below the screen. Bonus points, it has Alexa, which she had been wanting to try. It, too, was easy to set up and call up music, her main interest.

I bought this soundbar for my bedroom 42' Panasonic TV. The soundbar was easy to set up and provides crisp high-fidelity audio which is a significant improvement over the TV's built-in speakers. The built-in 3" sub-woofers provide plenty of body shaking bass - there's no real need for an external subwoofer (but its supported). With ARC support the soundbar can be controlled with the TV's remote (on/off, volume). My disappoint is in the Alexa integration - the description said "Easily control your sound bar, music, smart devices, set alarms and more with Alexa built-in" so I anticipated that it could replace my Echo Dot. Erh Maybe. While you can control the input, volume and power, the unit itself does not seem to have Alexa built-in. Yes, the soundbar will pick up my voice commands, but Alexa would respond from my Alexa Echo in the other room. I could never get Alexa to speak through the soundbar without pairing it to another Alexa device (like the Dot I was hoping to replace).

Are there better sound bars out there? Of course, but for a bit over $200 you'd be hard-pressed to find one that sounds better than this. I just laid out almost 3 grand with tax for a flagship TV so my wife limited me to what I could spend on a soundbar. I've never been a big fan of preset EQ modes, I'd rather have a true 5 band equalizer so I could fine tune the sound to my personal preference but it seems that's the way of the soundbar world these days. I'm 62 yrs old and not a big fan of thumping bass, so although the bass is by no means weak, this soundbar does the trick for me. I prefer balanced sound up and down the spectrum. I found the best sound mode (for me) for music by testing the 6 different modes while playing 'David Gilmour - Wish You Were Here / Live at Pompei 2016' on YouTube over and over again. The treble was remarkably true and super crisp for the acoustic guitars in the beginning, the vocals were clear and when the drums came in mid-way through the song the bass was just right using sports mode with the 3D surround function turned on. And by the way, this soundbar has some serious kick to it when you crank it up with no discernible distortion to speak of . My built-in speakers will never wear out because I'll never use them again. Watching television the TV mode with clear voice turned on worked quite well for me. I could keep the volume low without straining to hear dialogue. So there you have it, from an old man's perspective this soundbar is serving me quite well. It was money well spent and was just what the doctor ordered to enjoy the excellent PQ on my new TV now with the enhanced sound it was crying out for. I haven't tried it on games or Blu-ray action movies as of this writing, but from what I've heard so far I'm sure it will perform quite well on those mediums. Even if some time down the road I sneak back to Best Buy and buy a more expensive soundbar, this excellent Yamaha YAS-109 will always have a place on a TV somewhere in my home.

Really good sound from this bar. However I needed to take it up a notch. Accustomed to feeling a bit more bass utilized the subwoofers sub out jack and use 2 - 12inch Klipsch 400 watt powered subs to increase the impact of the bar. Happy to say that the setup is so so much better. Lastly I bring down the bass on the bar and let the subs do the work. Then the bar speakers sing with mid and highs for a good overall sound in a compact setup that pleases me

I purchased this soundbar for a 65” Sony x900f tv. It was easy to hook up since my tv has an ARC port. All I needed was a high speed HDMI cable and I was good to go. The soundbar is compact and fits nicely under the tv. It is small but it has big sound. It greatly improved the sound quality for everything from movies, sports, games, music, etc. It also works with Alexa and Spotify. The price is also extremely reasonable. Very happy with this purchase.
