VERY GOOD A/V RECEIVER

It's the best receiver I've ever owned. It has a large number of audio (including phono) and video input/output connections (HDMI, RCA, optical). Connects to my home Wi-Fi network. Love that it has Bluetooth and AirPlay. Great sound output. Love that my smartphone can be used to control it with the Yamaha app. Despite being replaced with the RX-V6A, which is really just the same receiver with an updated look, it's still supported by Yamaha with firmware updates. Definitely worth the investment.

This receiver has helped simplify the set up in my home theater room. I always had several different devices with different video formats that caused a lot of cable switching or changing inputs on multiple devices to get the picture. This takes the different input types and converts them nicely to HDMI. In addition there are 2 HDMI outputs which is perfect, because I have a projector for family movie nights and a separate TV for other times. The output can playback both at the same time as well.

This Yamaha receiver is amazing. I had previously updated my home theater system with a Polk center and floor speakers, added bose rear speakers with a polk 600 watt subwoofer, but kept i thinking about a new reciever. I found this yamaha receiver, open box and drove an hour to get it. I simply setup the receiver and turned it on without adjusting the speakers. The stars wars movie sounded like the cinema. Not: The ARC setup with my Samsung Q80T was automatic,

I am 2 weeks into enjoying my new Yamaha RX-V685 7.2 ch receiver that I have connected to my Bose Acoustimass 10 V, 5.1 system. I'm very pleased with the performance so far. Better in some ways than my previous Bose Lifestyle 535 complete all in one system. Have not listed to too much music yet but with 4K streaming movies its very good! Only complaints (they are minor) is the size of the remote, lack of full paper owners manual, and the somewhat complicated settings/adjustment screens. I'm now looking for any fine tuning suggestions from any Best Buy/Yamaha moderators or members of the community. Thanks!
Here is where I stand with my listing area and speaker locations:
1. Listening area is in the basement with these dimensions: 18
ft. X 18 ft. and a 9 ft. high ceiling. Carpet floor and leather
entertainment style seating.
2. Front and center speakers are mounted on the wall to the
left, right, and top of TV with Bose brackets. Rear surround
speakers are mounted from ceiling with Bose bracket.
3. Bose AM is positioned on the front wall (TV wall) but with the
opening towards the right hand wall corner. For added bass
response.
Here is what my settings are so far on the Bose AM:
1. LFE control is turned to max.
2. Bass control is tuned to 50% (middle)
3. LFE wire is connected to receiver "sub 1" port.
Here is how my receiver is set up:
1. Front L & R, center, and rear L & R are all set to 80hz
crossover and speaker size to "small".
2. Sub is set to "on" & "normal phase"
3. Speaker distance from listening position is 13 ft. for Front L,
R, and center. 10 ft. for rear L & R. 15 ft. for the AM (sub).
4. Front L & R are set at +2db, center is at +3db, rear L & R are at
+10db (needed to get good surround sound), and AM (sub) is
at +6db.
5. Equalizer is off, treble is at +4db, bass is at +3db, and "extra
bass" is off.
6. Receiver is running on Dolby digital surround mode.
7. Receiver Ohms setting is at 8.
Sorry for all of the excessive details here, just wanted to be complete in my explanation.

This is easily the best receiver I've ever had, and I've had some much more expensive "high-end" brands. This one just does everything I need it to do. The stereo separation is fantastic. Sound is incredible. Plenty of power. The controls are easy and intuitive. Plenty of inputs for all my devices. The speaker configuration is done on my TV screen, so it is really easy to adjust and fine tune. I'm using this in a large room with a vaulted ceiling, and it is more than up to the task. I love it.

Due a recent lightning strike at our house, I had to replace all of the receivers in our house (3 of them along with a lot of other electronics). Even with Whole house surge protection on the Breaker panel, the strike still fried a lot of electronics in our house. Prior to the strike, I had Yamaha, Onkyo, and Denon Receivers. I opted to replace all of them with Yamaha receivers this time. I bought 2 of these (RX-V685), and 1 cheaper model for our master bedroom (don't watch much TV in there but I had in-wall surround speakers, I needed powered). I hated the Denon receiver. Didn't mind the Onkyo stuff. I just liked Yamaha's easy to understand User interfaces better so I went with Yamaha this time.
I had the 2017 year model (681) of this receiver before in our TV room in the basement and it was nice. I must say that I really like the newer year model much better. The on screen Menu/UI is much more user friendly than their old one. The setup was super easy. I was able to do almost everything I wanted without even having to read the owners manual, that's how intuitive they made the UI. The YPAO auto speaker setup automatically detects when the mic is plugged in and it's basically 1 click on the remote to get the sound setup going.
I also really like the Yamaha iphone app, where I can control everything from my phone. You can also independently control the 2 zones with the iphone app too. I can be grilling some dinner on the back deck and listening to my music outside, and our little boys can be watching the Croods for the 2,432'nd time in the Living room. All of this can be done from my phone app.

This is a really great sounding Receiver for the money it does Excellent 7.1 and the IOS is really well laid out and very functional !
You really cant beat this receiver for the money.
But one warning if you are buying this for the Atmos it will do Atmos at 5.1 In my case I had a 7.1.2 - the 2 are the extra Atmos speakers so I really needed a 9 channel Receiver to utilize all the speakers I had.
But again this receiver will do 7.1 beautifully,

At first I was very frustrated with this unit because every time I had the volume at a semi high volume it would cut off saying to check sp wire. I did so many times, reran wire, check continuity on all of the wires and everything seemed to be in working order. Yet the unit continued to cut off on my. I was about to swap it out with another when I decided to check the speakers one by one. Low and behold my two front speakers were showing no continuity. They would put out sound but once it was turned up they would cause the amp to shut off. (fyi to check your speakers too if you get a check sp wire error) But after unplugging those speakers this system cranks up all the way with absolutely no distortion and sounds amazing. Plenty of power with no sacrifice to audio quality. I am beyond pleased with all of the options that this receiver gives me, especially the dolby atmos, which is the main reason i decided to get another receiver. The music cast app could be a little better with the navigation and yes the remote buttons are very flat. You have to look at the remote every time you go to press a button, otherwise you will be pressing the wrong one since it's so hard to tell which button you're on. But i use my harmony remote 99% of the time so this is not too much of an issue for me. Just when i was doing the initial set up. I hope to have this receiver for a very long time.

Sounds great. Always happy with Yamaha. Mid-tier price but the features rival what you get with some of the sub $1K models. Very happy so far with it.
One call out. Make sure you have decent HDMI cables. Had some issues with HDMI and ARC capabilities. turns out it was the cable after hours of trouble shooting. Save yourself some headache and get a decent set of cables.

This is my 2nd Yamaha receiver. I bought Yamaha RX-V683 7.2 Channel receiver in Nov 2017 also from BestBuy and I love it so much. I had upgraded from a 14 year-old Kenwood receiver and it was a HUGE improvement. I loved RX-V683 so much, I bought this one as a 2nd receiver for my apt. I was a bit tempted to go buy with another brand because there was a great promotion but at the end, I landed on this one.
I must say that I have not used all of its fancy functions. I have not tried the Internet or the bluetooth or the MusicCast. I normally use it in the old traditional way, straight from the cd player or blu player source to the speakers. I don't use the HD ARC connection so I cannot tell you about those features. But from what I've read from the reviews on the Internet (and I have read hundreds of reviews on all brands of receivers), Yamaha stands out to be the best rated receiver brand and most people (99%) enjoy its features and there are fewer complaints compared to other brands. I use it for movies and music and I love the sound. I use it with Klipsch speakers. I wouldn't dream of buying another brand. I play music sometimes 12-16 straight hours, the unit is on all day and it doesn't even heat up, only lukewarm after 16 hours of operation. Yamaha receivers are built like a rock. That's all I can say.

This is my second Yamaha receiver owned first one for 20 years never had a problem sold to update to 7.2 ARC receiver. Yamaha produces a quality product. Receiver has plenty of power to run any size speaker and has many sound field options for a mid price receiver. Easy to hook up and operate.

I was amazed at the difference it made in the ease of use and improved quality of sound in my home theater and outdoor music system! I'm 67 years young and not electronics savvy so I was very happy with how it simplified the overall operation of going from zone to zone. I would definitely recommend!

The surround sound is great, it actually sounds like you are in the conversation rather than watching a scene. The YPAO setup was effortless. The Yamaha phone app controller for the receiver is so easy i hardly use the remote control.

Upgraded receiver to get 4k passthrough. Setup was very easy following detailed instructions in the owners manual. Of course I wouldn't know that I'm a guy and we don't use owners manuals.
Easy to use and sounds great, haven't rattled the walls yet, that's still to come.

I replaced an older AV receiver which still seemed to have more years left unfortunately it died 2 months after the service plan expired. This unit sounds better, is more interactive and has apps to assist in setup. Still to early to tell if I'll ad that "5th" star but like I said so far so good.

Have this receiver setup to Bose Acoustimass speakers with HDMI-ARC input/output from Samsung Q80 TV... connection setup was easy as I was replacing an older Yamaha receiver (no ARC, Bluetooth, WiFi connectivity, etc) but essentially same rear connections.. getting the ARC to interface with the TV was frustrating but eventually I got it all running seamlessly and through the TVs universal remote.. Bluetooth connects to smartphones, laptop, iMac with no issues.. there are more advanced functions that I don’t utilize but this has been great so far.. very responsive sound through Bose speakers and connected sub drivers great low tones..
