I purchased this receiver to replace its predecessor, which was also a Yamaha, but was 12 years old and beginning to get glitchy. Its predecessor was a higher end version with a bit more functionality.
This receiver is really pretty much perfect. I chose it over the updated version of its predecessor because it is simpler. This receiver is very simple and straight forward to use - very easy to optimize sound quality, move through effects settings, control inputs etc. Per the description, it's optimized to drive a 5 speaker/sub woofer system, which is what we have, and it does that very well. Sound quality is on par with the more expensive receiver but I would say it's not quite as "deep". That's a tough characteristic to nail down, but it doesn't quite drive the edges (highs and lows) like the more expensive receiver. That said, it's a VERY minor difference and likely not noticeable by 99% of the human species (my wife can't tell). It makes up for that minor deficiency with sub-woofer performance and simplicity of operation.
The remote is cleaner the the previous version and has a more positive and direct interface over functions. The LED display is also very clear and easy to see across a large room.
Overall this is a VERY GOOD product, particularly for the ridiculously low price. I didn't give it 5 stars only because it's truly not perfect from an audio standpoint, which is the perspective of this review. If I was going strictly on audio value per $$ this would absolutely be a 5 star review.

Thought I was going to have a problem with this product in the beginning as it went into a mode that would not allow you to hear the audio when using as an AV unit. Then after a little research on Yamahas website it suggested to do a factory reset on it which I did and have never had a problem since. So if you buy this product and this happens to you don't give up, because I was literally two days from bringing it back to the store when I read that this does happen every once in awhile to these model receivers. Don't give up on it. Follow the instructions and read up on the awesome features that this has because there are certain ways to use certain preset features to make your listening and viewing experience top notch!

It’s a very sophisticated unit. Lots of settings. Lots of inputs. Very clear sound from it. 4k video improved the picture on our TCL tv. I’m 80. I had to read the instructions several times and looked up information on the internet about how to set it up. Videos on YouTube helped a lot.

This receiver isn't like the Yamaha receivers of 20 years ago, and that's expected.
The on screen setup is nice and the remote setup is quick. The programs for surround are well developed. Bluetooth connects quick and it reconnects fast every time
Output is clean and playback is accurate

This Yamaha 5.1 channel receiver is terrific. It is used in the den for music listening and movies. The Klipsch front speakers and Polk center, subwoofer and satellite speakers blow sound bars away. The hdmi inputs make tv and Firestick connections easy. What started as a reasonably priced receiver has turned into a fun listening area. The YPAO microphone helps tune speaker placement for the best sound for yourseating area. The Bluetooth receiver works great for listening from your devices. The usb port in the front is great for a flash drive full of your favorite music. This product has exceeded my expectations for home hi fidelity.

Bought as replacement for Sony STR-DH590, which decided to go into protect mode 30 days after warranty , after reading reviews it's a common problem, sorry I digress. I'm glad I purchased this Yamaha, sound is much better vs the sony. Highly recommend this unit.

An excellent value for the price! While the features are minimal, the software that comes with this provides a wide variety of surround styles. Big fan of the system allowing banana plugs for speaker wires!

Purchased this to replace an older Yamaha home theater receiver and found it easy to set up and configure. The included microphone and auto-setup even recognized and highlighted that I had connected the subwoofer with the connections reversed. It recognized my connected devices and named their inputs correctly. Great sound. Would recommend.

We purchased this as an "open box" item, and saved $110. The box was marked "slight scratches" but we didn't find any damage, and the clerk allowed us to open the box up inside the store, before we left. Easy set up. Good sound. And it has enough features and flexibility for our needs.

Some may call this an entry level receiver. It’s not. I looked at the Yamaha receiver above this one that cost more money and is their top of the line 5.1 receiver. It has more features that I wouldn’t use and the specs aren't as good as this one. This is a powerful low distortion receiver without all of the frills. I say it’s near the top in 5.1 performance. Clean pure sound with plenty of power. Power is not an issue. I had a 5 year old Yamaha that drank some water and the magic smoke left it's soul. It died. RIP. This receiver replaced it. This receiver is wired up to the same speakers and it is a world of difference. Awesome.

Not perfect, but I'll still give it 5 stars. I needed this unit so I could use the surround sound speakers built into my house. I'm using this with an Apple TV (4th gen). I have the Apple TV hooked up to the HDMI1 input, and then the HDMI output to the TV. The 5 house speakers are directly connected to this receiver. The only issue I had is that the Apple TV could still not control the volume directly - I needed to train the Apple remote to control the receiver directly through IR. This was a pain as this receiver is installed in another room just behind the TV. I use an IR extender to wirelessly extend the IR signal, and now all works well, and I can control volume directly in the TV room with the Apple remote. This unit replaces an old Kenwood stereo receiver that I had for 30 years. I hope this lasts as long. The 5.1 channel sound is a nice upgrade.
Another nice thing about this unit - you get an onscreen setup menu, which allows you to fine tune each speaker - useful as one of my speakers is blocked my a plant, so I can turn it up a little to even things out. Very nice.

The Yamaha - 5.1-Ch. 4K Ultra HD A/V Home Theater Receiver is a wonderful central component to a home entertainment system. It is an especially versatile device for anyone who is interested in the incorporation of both modern audio-visual (i.e., HDMI) and classic (i.e., RCA analog plug) components. There is a tremendous amount of flexibility as to what you can "hook up" to it. I have so many things running through it that you'd probably think I'm making this up (Tivo/Cable TV, Roku, Apple TV, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows 10 PC, Windows 10 Laptop, Stereo Turntable, 2 Stereo Cassette Recorders, CD/DVD player, Blue-ray/DVD Player, and I might have missed something). The way I did this is by adding a couple of HDMI 3-way switches and 1 analog 3-way switch to manage the whole thing and expand the component's options. There are a variety of input jacks on the back of the component, and that gave me the idea to "max it out." It even works. My only issue with the system is that the way the remote interfaces with the various component selections is somewhat confusing at times, especially when switching between HDMI and analog devices and navigating setup-type options and menu items. I still have some "learning curve" to master some of the inputs/outputs, especially the digital ones that I haven't used yet. I also would have liked to have a little more treble in the sound, but it's still great for most people. Anyway, this was another "great buy" from "Best Buy," and I would not hesitate at all to do it again. In fact, I wish I had bought two of them so that I'd have a setup in a couple of rooms. One other thing...it was lots of fun setting all of this up and making it work. For most people it would be much easier to set up because it already has more than enough options without adding switches, etc. This is a hobby for me, so don't get scared off.

I was looking just for a basic 5.1 channel receiver with good sound quality and decent power. I am not at all sorry that I chose to purchase this unit. It has very good quality sound, plenty of power and is relatively easy to set up. Yamaha has an excellent reputation for making good equipment, and this receiver is yet another reason why.

I have a 5.1 setup in my family room. It delivers good power for the size of the room which is about 14x19. Easy to use and setup. The output is 70 watts per channel. The way the product was displayed was confusing to the output so hence why I am clarifying.

Great for my needs. Run my bedroom TV system through this using my pc as the HDMI video source. Hooked up my TV via the Toslink audio and this receiver runs a pair of Bose 901's with ease. The sound is crisp and vibrant. This was a very inexpensive choice for my needs. After a year, I'm quite happy.

Yamaha receivers are simply the best! Easy to connect and operate, and those are important issues! The sound quality is fantastic as well. Love my Yamahas!

Yamaha fit the bill very nicely. Inputs for my DirecTV, Apple TV, and Blue Ray. Easy to rename all the input sources to match those names. Slight difficulty in establishing sound options by source type but after an hour of plunking around figured out how to do it. Nice unit pushing clean sound.
