I was replacing a six-year-old Yamaha receiver with this one to gain support of some of the latest video features that were not supported by my old receiver, specifically HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. My initial setup was quite easy as I simply unplugged the speakers and HDMI inputs from my old Yamaha, and then I plugged them into this new Yamaha. I did not use the YPAO, as my system is in a small loft, and I knew what I wanted. My old receiver had scene capability, but I had never used it. After reading about it, I set up scenes to make input switching easier with the individual settings I chose for each input. Everything worked seamlessly. However, please be aware I am not a gamer, and I had no need for 4K/120 Hz. I only have a 5.1 setup. I also have not used MusicCast. This receiver upgrade improved both my sound and my video. What's good about this receiver? The features for the price are good if you only need 5.1 (or 5.2). What's bad about this receiver? I hate the tiny display. It is impossible to read from across my very small loft (about eight feet away). You simply must set up the scenes and use them with "blind trust." I wanted a Yamaha RX-V6A, I just did not want to pay for it for my limited needs. If you have a larger room, want great 7.1 sound with Dolby Atmos, and you have the cash, I recommend buying the RX-V6A instead.

The sound quality is excellent. The setup was easy once you figure it out. They should include the owner's manual with the product. The display is pretty small but ok. I haven't had any issues with the receiver getting hot. I'm satisfied with this purchase. It's only been a week but I'll update my review if problems show up.

Replacing an eight year old Yamaha AV Receiver in a 5.1 system. This unit really has transformed our listening experience. We use the MusicCast app combined with Amazon Music (but there are many music options). The app allows us to select and play whatever music we like, no matter where we are in the home. Instructions for setup of MusicCast are incredibly bad. Just be forewarned that the Receiver has a combination of two regular dials and what look for all the world like labels affixed to the from of the unit. They are not actually labels, but buttons, and you must press the "label" for "Menu Connect" to setup the app. I had to talk to 2nd tier support to get this explanation, it is not in the feeble documentation (and pro video reviewers have been stumped too.) For whatever reason, the sound is far, far superior to our old Yamaha. More dynamic and clear. I think part of the reason may be the YPAO automatic room calibration feature that we did not have on our old unit. It really works. But Yamaha has also clearly upped their game for their lower end units, like using a High Slew Rate Amplifier that was not on our old unit. It just shows in the sound quality. We do NOT use the video inputs on this unit, we have our TiVo and Roku going directly into our LG CX 48 TV, then we use an HDMI cable to feed the audio into our Receiver using EARC. This was pretty much a disaster until we got both a firmware upgrade from Yamaha and one for the TV. Now it works amazingly well, enveloping our room with amazing TV sound. And we don't have to worry about all the new HDMI standards that may or may not be implemented properly.

The most important criteria is sound quality. This unit has the best. Easy setup, HDMI eARC and Optical are superb. Pandora via musiccast is a dream. The only negative is that it does not support youtube music streaming.

Replaced an old Onkyo TX-NR 747 which was slowly dying. Connected to Klipsch RP-160M front, RP-500C center, RP-500SA Dolby Atmos Surround rear, R-10SW sub-woofer. Most time consuming part was plugging in speaker wires and HDMI cables. First - download and read the manual before plugging it in. I saw all the complaints about the length but if a 77 year old can do it surely you bright kids can. I already own a Yamaha WXA-50 small amp with a huge crisp sound and had already installed the “Music Cast” app on my phone. Installing the app will solve half the setup complaints that I read in other reviews. Plug in the speaker setup Mike in the center of the room or near where you will be listening. Will ask to start speaker setup. Will cycle through signaling each speaker several times and save settings and you are done. Is not that difficult. You can go back into settings and fine tune to personal preferences, but automatic is really pretty good. I put the remote in a drawer and use the phone app for all streaming and stored music. Really happy with the sound. Room is 22’ by 22’ with 10’ ceiling and sound fills the room.

Got this as an open box item for $368 dollars. I think there was a mistake because there were speakers included which I didn’t need. Replaced my Onkyo TX-NR646 because it would randomly drop audio and it’s was a major annoyance. The clarity of this unit is amazing. I notice a difference in the surround speakers as well, they are more active if you will. Had this receiver for a month and it has had zero issues. Running Klipsch 820f floor speaker for fronts, Klipsch center, Klipsch bookshelf speakers and Klipsch 12” subwoofer. I was a little worried this wouldn’t be powerful enough because it was less powerful than my Onkyo, but now I have no worries. Definitely recommend.

I upgraded from an older 5.1 avr so I could utilize 4K pass through and not have to send four hdmi cables through the wall. It works great for that purpose as long as you don’t require 7 channels. If you think you might scale up, get the V6A, but if you’re sticking with 5.1, this seems like a steal. I’m not using the wifi or musicast for the rear channel, but I am using the musicast app to play music off the NAS/ethernet and its sounds great. I paid a lot of money for a network player not so long ago, and it’s amazing what you can get that functionality out of the box with a receiver now. The DAC probably isn’t as great as you get with a standalone, but it’s a serious bonus for an AVR, imo.

A spontaneous purchase, I wasn't interested in a 7 speaker setup. Download the Yamaha setup guide for calibration. Simple design on the front panel grabbed my attention as well as eARC compatibility and future firmware upgrade to 8k video pass through. I've had a good experience with the time I've spent with it and I am not an audiophile but want something more than a bland soundbar.

Recently upgraded to the popular LG CX65 OLED so I needed a receiver that was 4K compatible. I’m not much of a gamer at all so I tried this receiver out since it was less than $500. Had problems from the get go. Downloaded MusicCast app and it couldn’t even help me connect the thing to my wifi despite the instructions (or lack thereof) told me to do. Only instructions in the box are the “easy” set up instructions that are mostly just illustrations. I had to consult the very user-unfriendly Yamaha website and Reddit in order to get to several basic settings (Airplay security, 4K display settings, so forth). Ihad to turn off and turn back on the thing several times after I set it up because it would get frozen and wouldn’t let me switch inputs. Switching inputs is also a pain unless you figure out how to use/program the Scene buttons, which the remote has instead of just buttons labeled after the HDMI ports or given device names like SAT/Cable or BD/DVD and so forth. That was one of the many things I had to figure out online. Sound was pretty good but again hard to tinker with unless you do research. To top all this off, this receiver also didn’t get along with the LG tv and would keep switching back to my PS3 (yes I still have one) when I would use the Scene buttons to select my cable box. The only way it would stay on the cable box input was if I used the up and down input buttons to scroll through all the inputs and land on the cable box one. It also didn’t work with my Nintendo switch; just put sound out but no picture on the tv despite me trying different cables and inputs. After that last straw, decided to return it and spend more money on an Onkyo and I’m glad I did!

It looks unbeliavably good too! I am powering a polk elite system with this and wow the sound is so crisp and clean and powerful. I have two ES20’s powered by 2 channels, a single channel for the center and the remaining 2 channels used in a bi-amp wiring configuration powering a single ES60. There are also two subwoofer pre-amp outputs one of which im runnkng to a Klipsch 10”. No regrets here at all. This receiver does not break a sweat and im using it primarily as a stereo recoeber and not for home theater.

What a great buy. Far out performs my previous Sony receiver. Really appreciate how well it handles the multiple HDMI devices and am a big fan of it displaying the settings menus on my TV. That makes setting up sound preferences easy from normal viewing and hearing distances. Remote work well with it and the Scenes options makes customized settings for different devices or entertainment a blessing.

Easy to setup, connections are ok would rather have the connections you just push in and it catches the wire for the speakers, insted of having to loosen and wrap the wire around the terninal then tighten down the screw head. The system has enough power to give good sound it also has different srttings gor the type of sound you wish to have. Sound like hall, movie, music ect.

So far so good, HDMI 2.1 and eARC enables the receiver to stream 'losssless' FLAC audio. This can't do Dolby Atmos or simulated Atmos, but I don't care. Setup was pretty easy. I bought this as an open-box unit, and the remote control was missing, but the BB sales rep set me up with a new one, and made it worth my while.

Penomenal AV receiver and sounds very good. Reviews saying it is hard to set up are confusing to me. I disconnected an older Yamaha AV receiver, labelled my wires, and easily connected. I recommend capitalizing upon all of the features by using HDMI connections. The balance for sound is very pleasing, when watching TV, movies, etc. I have a fussy year - am a trained musician and apreciate good steroe systems. This is a very good receiver - I am loooking next int Music Cast Speakers for other roms tofuly capitalize on the network features.
