Synopsis

The Chronicles of Riddick
Vin Diesel returns as the nocturnally gifted antihero Riddick in this sequel to the 2000 cult item Pitch Black. Riddick, on the run from the law and evading mercenaries eager to claim the price on his head, seeks refuge on the planet of Helion, only to discover he's walked into a world in chaos. Helion has been seized by the Lord Marshall (Colm Feore), leader of the Necromongers, a race of bloodthirsty warriors determined to wipe out humanity throughout the universe. Aereon (Judi Dench), leader of Helion's "elementals," pleads with Riddick to join them in their fight for survival; Riddick agrees, hoping to fill out some of the blank chapters in his history along the way. As he plots his battle strategy against the Necromongers, Riddick becomes reacquainted with Kyra (Alexa Davalos), whom he knew as a girl but has since grown into a strong and beautiful woman eager to join him in the fight against the Lord Marshall. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Riddick
Vin Diesel's Riddick character gets a new lease on life in this third film from writer/director David N. Twohy. Katee Sackhoff and Bokeem Woodbine head up a group of assassins out to kill Riddick, who lures them to a desolate planet when confronted with a hostile alien species. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi

The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury
The Chronicles of Riddick: Dark Fury picks up where the original Pitch Black left off as Riddick is pitted against a ruthless bounty hunter in this animated prequel to the big-event summer movie The Chronicles of Riddick. Vin Diesel returns as the voice of the mysterious hero, with Keith David and Rhiana Griffith also reprising their roles from the first film. Directed by acclaimed animator Peter Chung (Aeon Flux, The Animatrix: Matriculated), this 30-minute direct-to-DVD feature promises highly stylized action and dynamic visuals that are sure to amaze and delight. ~ Jeremy Wheeler, Rovi

Pitch Black
In this science fiction thriller, a spaceship is transporting a disparate group of people to a far-away galactic outpost called New Mecca. Mechanical failures cause the craft to crash-land on an abandoned planet that has three suns and no night. The only member of the crew to survive is junior pilot Carolyn Fry (Radha Mitchell), while the passengers who climb from the wreckage include a police officer (Cole Hauser) and the prisoner he's transporting, Riddick (Vin Diesel). As Fry and the other survivors survey the abandoned dwellings of the desert world while trying to decide what to do next, one of them is killed by a mutant creature living in an abandoned mining site. The vicious and bloodthirsty mutants, who live underground, have killed all previous inhabitants of the planet; they cannot stand sunlight, but research reveals that the planet has a total eclipse every 22 years, and the latest one is due any moment. Pitch Black was directed by David N. Twohy, who also made the sci-fi cult item, The Arrival. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Disc One: Pitch Black Unrated/Theatrical 5.1 DTS-MA Dark Fury Non-Anamorphic 5.1 Dolby Pro Logic Extras Disc Two: The Chronicles of Riddick Unrated/Theatrical 5.1 DTS-MA Extras Disc Three: Riddick Unrated/Theatrical 5.1 DTS-MA Extras UV Codes for: Pitch Black Unrated Extended 5.1 Dolby Digital The Chronicles of Riddick Unrated Extended 5.1 Dolby Pro Logic Riddick Unrated Directors Cut 5.1 Dolby Digital My first issue is this, the ONLY Directors Cut you get is the Unrated version of Riddick. I have Pitch Black and The Chronicles of Riddick Directors Cuts on older DVD releases. I know from watching these movies, and expecting scenes, which never appear. These 2 movies are Unrated EXTENDED editions and NOT Directors Cuts. My second issue is when I used my UV downloads and added this collection to VuDu, Chronicles is 5.1 Pro Logic??? Yeah, sounds strange to me also, and I still haven't figured this one out. Overall an excellent purchase for any fan of the genre, story, or Vin...and priced very well...but KNOW WHAT YOU ARE BUYING.

At first glance it seems like the plot of "Riddick" closely resembles that of "Pitch Black". It seems like there is only soo much you can do to place a mass murderer in a situation where his "surgical shine job" gives him the edge. While I am on that subject, in pitch black he tells jack that he got a surgical shine job while in prison that gives him his vision abilities, then in Riddick, we find out that supposedly the "furyons" which are his people have his eyes inherent to the race... just a plot hole I noticed... Now back to the review. While from watching this movie, it does explain what happened after "the chronicles of riddick" with a decent amount of flashbacks, I wish they had left him as the leader of the necromongers and had the whole movie take place during and expanding on said flashbacks, that way this movie "riddick" could come out as the next movie in the franchise. Im sure the studio had its reasons for doing so but it just leaves me wishing they expanded on his time as leader of the necromongers. Overall I enjoyed the movie and will watch it again in the future, if you are a fan of the franchise... its worth the buy. P.S. the box set is great.

Having all 3 Riddick movies plus all of their director's cuts AND the animated film in the same place for a great price is awesome. The movies are fun and exciting, giving today's action heroes a run for their money. The picture and sound for the primary movies are excellent but it is very disappointing to see the animated film Dark Fury not in HD. SD features have LONG outstayed their welcome in an HD world and DO NOT belong on a bluray unless the movie's too old for the format and a quality source for an encode on the special features can't be found. Dark Fury came out only about 10 years ago. Very cheap on universal's part. But other than that I'd recommend this to anyone who likes action, sci-fi, or good storytelling.

This set was worth getting at the price. Not only do you get the extended, unrated cuts of the entirety of the Riddick series in great HD transfer, but you get their Digital copies and a fair bit of extras. As someone who missed out on some of the epic deals they did for Terminator last year with its Collection, I made it up for getting Die Hard and Underworld's collections. This year, it was Riddick, Lord of the Rings (Extended), and Alien with their complete sets. Usually, getting them in one set's a good price. This one sweetens the deal and it is easily a must have for a subtle sci-fi series that highlights a solid character.

For those unfamiliar with the Riddick series, the first movie is a sci-fi horror/creature film in which the titular Riddick happens to feature alongside a cast of mostly likeable characters. From there the series changes into more of a sci-fi epic hinting at greater things to come before going back to it's roots for the third movie in favor of a smaller scale with a focus on other characters again. Overall the series is worth a watch if you are a fan of science fiction as there is nothing else quite the same as Riddick and the universe imagined in the films can be quite interesting.

If you are a fan of the Riddick movies and don't already have them on Blu-Ray, this is a good way to grab all of them at once and get them on digital HD UltraViolet at the same time (except for the animated short, Dark Fury - you don't get a digital copy of that one). One drawback is that you do not get the movies on DVD, in case that is important to you. Otherwise the videos look very good, and if you haven't used UltraViolet's service in the past it's gotten much better. You can link with Flixster and VuDu so you can watch your collection on your iPad, PlayStation, Android, etc. I used to hate UltraViolet but it's starting to grow on me.

I picked this up for $35 on sale and it was a bargain for 4 movies on blu ray. I did not own any of these on blu ray so it was a good deal. A couple of nit picky complaints...only the 3 major motion pictures have download codes. The codes are both UV and iTunes. The animated straight to disc has no code. But, all 4 movies have their own Blu-ray Disc and all the extras from the DVDs. There are no DVDs in this set. For the completist or blu ray fanatic, this is the set to get. I gave it 4 out of 5 because of the lack of the 4th download code and DVDs.

OKAY...I WILL BE THE FIRST TO ADMIT IT....RIDDICK ROCKS...EVEN FOR AN OLD GUY. THIS IS A STRAIGHT UP ACTION FLICK WITH A CHARACTER THAN NO ONE BUT VIN DIESEL COULD PLAY. HE GETS TO BRING A LITTLE MORE LIFE TO THE CHARACTER WHILE STILL PLAYING THE ANTI-HERO AND EVEN MANAGES TO GET THE GIRL - ONLY THING THAT ANNOYED ME WAS THAT THE DOG DIED! PREDICTABLE...MAYBE...BUT IF YOU'RE A FAN...WHO CARES...AND ON TOP OF THAT THE DOOR IS OPEN FOR ANOTHER MOVIE. HOPEFULLY WILL SEE THEM EXPAND ON THE STORYLINE AS WELL AS THE HISTORY AND FATE OF FURYAN - MAYBE YOU CAN GO HOME?!
