A surprising new sound from Keith Urban

I originally purchased Keith Urban's "Ripcord" for my sister as a birthday gift, who is a big fan of his, but upon listening to it for myself, I was pleasantly surprised about the new sound that he has going here (well, minus the guest appearance by Pitbull, who I can't stand). Gone were most of the rock leaning guitars and heavy drums...and in comes EDM-inspired loop drums along with pop-influenced beats. Now, would I call this album "Country?" Not at all, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing because most of the material on this record is surprisingly solid, catchy, and musically diverse. In fact, I'd even recommend those that normally listen to pop music to check this album out, because there are many tracks on this album that rely on this genre the most, aside from the EDM genre, as I previously mentioned. There is also a very nice 80s feel to this album as well, largely thanks to synthesizer heavy tracks like "Gone Tomorrow (Here Today) (the keyboard heavy bridge is awesome in this track) and "Your Body" which sounds similar to Taylor Swift's song "Style" as well. Moreover, "The Fighter" which features the always wonderful Carrie Underwood, also gives off a 70s Diana Ross disco sound as well...which is great. In summary, before I listened to this album, I really wasn't a huge Keith Urban fan, but now that I have, I am interested to see how his next album will sound. I do, however, like a few of his older tracks, such as "Better Life" and "Days Go By"...but just might pick up a copy of his "Greatest Hits" as well.

I was SO excited to find the CD that was the last one in the store....only to find out when I got home the CD case was not only cracked, but looked like someone had stepped on it. I held my breath that the CD itself was not damaged and it wasn't, or I would have been very upset! I understand that these things happen, but I paid full price for damaged goods. ☹️ I will recommend people to Best Buy, but will warn them to carefully look over their purchase. Same thing goes with my new laptop....thought it came with a CD player and it didn't, sooooo be very very careful when purchasing items there!

Keith has great hooks, harmonies and guitar/banjo playing! I don't listen to a lot of country, but caught him on A.I. singing "Wasted Time". I previewed the other songs online, and ended up buying the CD. I've bought over a thousand CD's, but only about 15 were country, so this shows how good of an album this is. I will now have to check out Keith's back catalog, I know he has 21 #1 hits, so I'm looking forward to seeing how he got to top the charts that many times!

Huge fan of Mr. Urban, but this one leaves me wanting more. Tracks like "Blue Ain't Your Color" and "Boy Gets A Truck" possess the kind of songwriting storylines that I have grown accustomed to coming from Keith. But a few of them incorporate way too much pop and/or dance music for me to rate Ripcord any higher. No matter what direction his music takes in the future, I will continue to support him and buy his albums. He is a great musician!

Keith Urban is trying to do too much. He is a country icon, but doing hip-hop and pop stuff on this new effort isn't his bag and won't broaden his appeal. A successful artist hates to just stick to what he does best, but when it comes off as blatant pandering to find an expanded audience, he should re-think the approach. Still, there are a few good ole great country pop tunes that work as well as anything he's done before.

Keith Urban is one of the most talented entertainers in the industry. He writes and sings and plays a mean guitar He is a wonderful husband and father I have watched many interviews with him and with Nicole. I have read many articles and it is wonderful to hear the wonderful understanding they have for each other's career Keith. Urban is the best I enjoy his older songs as well as his new ones

Keith Urban crushes this album with a lot of new music experimentation and direction that work. I believe this is his best album to date. Keith is a musical genius and of course an excellent guitar player although he dabbled with the bass on this record. Checked out "Wasted Time", "John Cougar, John Deere, John 3:16", "Sun Don't Let Me Down", and "The Fighter". One of the best album releases of 2016 so far.

This is good material in general with a few standout pieces. The radio releases are great, the rest of the album is solid and entertaining. I still like to have the physical cd. I rip to my phone later. This cd didn't stay in the player as long as some do but it's still a solid piece overall and recommended.
