I wasn't quite sure what to expect going into this because how far can you run with a story about Jack the Ripper? Turns out, though the Ripper though a constant threat shadowing the people of White Chapel (at least in this season), it isn't really about him. It's about the men trying to keep order in the very rough streets of White Chapel. Matthew Macfayden wonderfully plays Edmund Reid, the moral center (despite everything) in a place that's sorely lacking. Also fantastic is Jerome Flynn as Bennet Drake. As a side note, the language used in the series fascinates me - there's an almost Shakesperean quality to it.

Great new bbc show. The acting is mostly superb, with a few odd physical choices. Set in the aftermath of the Ripper murders in Whitechapel, British detectives solve crimes, afraid that the Ripper may strike again. If I had to come up with a complaint, Jerome Flynn (Bronn from Game of Thrones) is underutilized at times, and frankly the episodes featuring his character more tend to be the better and more exciting episodes of the show. Also to Game of Thrones fans, lots of actors from that show show up as guest stars here.

I am a HUGE fan of the BBC series Sherlock so when I find another BBC series I find myself giving it a try. This one is a HUGE surprise. I was expecting the worst (hating it to the point of turning it off half way through the first ep.), hoping for it to be at least entertaining enough to not regret buying it and at best I would be looking forward to the next season. This show went well beyond that!

A gritty version of "Murdoch Mysteries"

"Ripper Street" does for London ca. 1890 what "Murdoch Mysteries" does for Toronto a few years later, albeit with a much grittier tone and visual style. Well-done mysteries with social underpinnings, a solid cast (except for the American guy) and good production values make this a keeper. I'll definitely get the subsequent seasons.

Derivative of other BBC shows, but it grows on you

This is a show that draws on a lot of other BBC shows, and while I thought that would make it unenjoyable, it has not been so. The leads are very strong, as is the scenery and art direction. I'm not a fan of shows that have 'mythologies' associate with them, and Ripper Street has that. Too many obscure references to back stories without payoff.

If you enjoy these period time piece shows/movies of the late nineteenth century, then you'll enjoy Ripper Street. It reminds me a lot of Sherlock Holmes. There's drama, suspense, humor, and more. I found it well acted and believable. I can't wait to watch more!
