Hitchcock's music is still fun, weird and smart

Robyn Hitchcock's new self titled record is a reassuring set of songs that shows that Hitchcock, at 64, is still committed to making good, fun poppy rock. The songs are fully fleshed out. They remind me of Hitchcock's late 80s and early 90s work in being catchy while retaining his quirky, smart distinctiveness. Hitchcock is engaged and mischievous. On I Want to Tell You About What I Want he takes his time, telling us that we think he's a thug and that we have "cannibal overlords" before telling us that what he wants is "world peace" "socialismo no machismo", that the only God should be the God of L-O-V-E" and that he wants "a non invasive form of telepathy." On Virginia Woolf, he's oddly jolly in paying tribute to suicidal writers. On I Pray When I'm Drunk, Hitchock does a nice job staying within the country song form. With decent variety, the good songs keep coming on Robyn Hitchcock.

Robyn Hitchcock has been making music since the 70's starting out in his first band The Soft Boys, and this release definitely one of his best. His guitar-based psychedelic pop encompasses the ‘60s British Invasion and Barrett-era Pink Floyd
