I have never owned a Roku streaming box before now, but I have had plenty of experience with the Roku 2 and 3 prior to purchase. I was buying this for use on my bedroom TV, which I don't watch all that often. I limited my budget based on this use case which brought me to 2 options. The Express or the Stick (it was on sale at the time, so same price). My TV is older and doesn't doesn't have USB ports to power the Stick, and its HDMI ports were on the side. This would make the Stick protrude well beyond the edge of the TV, and it would require wall power just like the Express. For these reasons I ruled out the Stick and went with the Express. The Express is a very small device - no bigger than a roll of quarters. It comes with double sided tape so you can mount it anywhere - I stuck mine to the bottom edge of the TV. I hooked it up using the provided HDMI cable and wall charger. Setup was pretty easy - you need to have a computer nearby to login and activate the Express before you can use it. I was able to add my HULU, HBOnow, and Sling accounts from the web browser on my computer. I could also pick a few of the free streaming channels I like through the browser, and it would automatically add it to the Express. However, I had to add my Nettflix account directly on the device - not an option through the browser. This was a more time consuming way to add accounts, and I'm not sure why Netflix was singled out. The interface on the device is pretty straightforward. Newcomers will not be overwhelmed, and its pretty intuitive. I was used to it coming from the 2 and 3, so there was no learning curve. The remote is just OK. It does what I need it to, so I guess that is good enough. Picture quality is solid. I'm watching at 1080P without it buffering/lagging/pixelating. I was worried about my router having enough signal in my bedroom to keep up, but it hasn't been an issue. For an MSRP of $30, this is a nice little streamer.

Roku Channel has hundreds of free movies

      Posted

I have used Roku for years, including several different models. The best new thing of note is Roku has recently released The Roku Channel, which has hundreds of free movies. It is ad supported.Roku has just about every app you can imagine. The Express is the least expensive model, but it works fine. Here are some points to consider when deciding on which model of Roku to buy: 1)If you need to connect by WiFi in a room far away from your WiFi router,I would recommend the Roku Streaming Stick PLUS or Roku Ultra. 2)If you have a 4K TV,I would recommend the Roku Ultra or Roku Streaming Stick PLUS. 3)To search for content using your voice,go with either the Streaming Stick,Streaming Stick PLUS or Ultra. 4)If you want a wired ethernet connection,go with the Roku Ultra. 5)If you want to connect to an old TV with RCA/Composite audio/video jacks, you will need the Express PLUS 6)The Express models have a remote where it has to be pointed at the device, unlike the other Roku models. 7)If you are only going to buy one Roku device,I would recommend the Roku Ultra. The Ultra has many unique features that the other Roku models don't such as: -Gaming buttons to play video games -Remote finder to find a lost remote control -Ethernet port for a wired connection -Micro SD card slot -USB Port -Night listening mode (this lowers the volume of loud, explosive sounds and raises the volume of soft sounds like whispers.Very useful!) -Headphone jack on the remote for listening without disturbing others

I own and older version of the Roku but after reading the Xfinity website I found I could replace my Xfinity box with a newer version of the Roku stick. The Roku does take the place of the secondary box, it is not as easy with the Roku remote since the Roku remote has no numbers and the setup for Xfinity is slightly different but it serves its purpose and I don't pay extra monthly fees for the small cable box from Xfinity. I do on the other hand receive all the Roku channels so it is a win for me. As I think about it... I did buy the cheapest version of a Roku for $29 and unlike my first one the remote is line of sight which means that the remote has to be pointed right at the Roku device as opposed to my old one which hid behind the television connected to the HDMI port. So the Box they give you is now taped to the bottom of my television so I can point my remote at it. Maybe this cuts down on cost for the least expensive version but it's not a big deal for me.

Overall, I like the Roku Streaming Media Player, and I prefer it to the Amazon Fire Stick which I have also tried. The Roku delivers better quality, I do not see the annoying "stuttering effect" that I frequently experienced with the Amazon Fire stick. I also prefer Roku's user interface as it is simple and straightforward. I would give this product the full five stars if not for the occasional problems I have with the Roku remote control. Sometimes the remote looses its connection with the Roku streaming stick, and I tried the reset button inside the remote's battery compartment but that usually fails to correct this issue. I found through a process of trail and error that the best thing to do in this case is to just reset the Roku stick by unplugging its A/C adapter and then plugging it back in. Then the remote works again. I would not consider this issue a deal breaker though, as it only occurs occasionally, and when it does occur it is easy to fix.

      Great Roku Express Streaming Player!

My old Roku streaming stick seemed to be running so slowly lately but I wasn't sure if it was the Roku or the old 22 inch HDTV I had it attached to. With the great price of this Roku express streaming player I decided to see if there would be any difference and wow. It's like night and day. This little express streaming Roku compared to my older streaming stick is much faster with no lags. As fast as I can click it can go. It also runs the most modern version of Netflix with the annoying auto preview which my older steaming stick did not run. Finally, the remote is great and even pointing it at the opposite direction from the little Roku box commands are affected instantly. They even include an HDMI cable and 2 AAA Duracell batteries with the little Roku box and remote. Amazing value. This is definitely one of those rare "steal" purchases where it seems you really are getting the better deal by a mile. Excellent device and value!

It's a Roku and that makes it good but the Express is a significantly smaller and underpowered streaming device. The main issues with the Express are that it's a bit on the slow side and that it's not nearly as clear in picture quality as the Roku Stick or the Ultra. If you need smart TV functions on guest rooms and small TV's, the Express is the way to go. Otherwise, for home theater enthusiasts, pay a little bit more and get yourself the Ultra. A few things to keep in mind: there is no TV volume control with this remote, DirecTV Now is so slow on this device compared to other Roku products, and there is no ethernet connection so you must have a good wifi connection. Otherwise, I would still keep this as an option for anyone looking to add Roku features on the cheap.

In order to get rid of my cable boxes and stream Spectrum instead I got two Roku streaming players. The setup instructions are fairly simple, but there are two things that I did not like. One was that the included HDMI cable was way too short...I simply used the existing one from my boxes. The second thing I did not like...you have to activate these devices online, was that you had to provide a credit card even if you never plan to make a purchase. All I want to do is stream Spectrum. Those two things aside, I am very happy with their performance so far. Picture quality and sound are excellent and I like the remote control, it is simple to use with few buttons.

I bought this Roku device to hook up to an older DLP TV in my guest bedroom that didn't have smart features. I love this device! You cannot beat Roku in terms of the amount of apps and content. The Roku user interface and remote are very easy to figure out and use. This Roku Express is the lowest level Roku device, but it still performs well and it has all the content of the higher-end Roku devices. Overall I think any Roku device is much better than any of the competitors (Amazon Stick, Chromecast, etc). Nowadays all the competing devices have pretty fast hardware, but the deciding factor is which one has the most content to choose from and best service, and Roku provides big advantages there in my opinion.
