Synopsis

Roots
This award-winning six-part historical epic was one of the first examples of the miniseries format and one of the highest-rated television programs in broadcasting history. Based on the best-selling novel by author Alex Haley, Roots chronicles the progress of Haley's own family across many generations, from the kidnapping of an African warrior by American slave traders to eventual post-Civil War freedom. Kunta Kinte (LeVar Burton) is a young tribesman of coastal Africa who has passed the rituals marking his transition into manhood. Searching for wood to build a drum, he is set upon by slavers who sell him in the United States after a nightmarish Atlantic crossing. Defiant, Kunta refuses to consider himself a slave, despite some sage advice from his mentor, the more mature Fiddler (Louis Gossett Jr.). As the years pass, the aging Kunta (John Amos) is hobbled for his repeated escape attempts. Realizing he'll never return to Africa, Kunta settles down, becoming husband to Bell (Madge Sinclair) and father to Kizzy (Leslie Uggams), a girl infused with her father's independent spirit. Sold and then raped by her new master, Kizzy has a son, Chicken George (Ben Vereen), a happy go lucky cockfighting expert who uses his skills to buy his freedom. George paves the way for his children, the great-grandchildren of Kunta Kinte, who finally become free in the aftermath of the Civil War. Roots (1977) was followed by a sequel miniseries, Roots: The Next Generations (1979), and a made-for-television feature, Roots: The Gift (1988), as well as another telefilm based on the family history of the Haley clan, Queen (1993). ~ Karl Williams, Rovi

I remember watching the show when I was 13 years old. And now having the show on Blu-ray from what I can remember it's all there complete and unedited. This was something that I was worried about on the previous DVD releases. The sound is fine, It's in DTS but I know it is in mono. I have to say that this restoration / transfer to Blu-ray is remarkable! The image is crystal clear and sharp for a television programme that was shot in 1977. The special features are fine I wish there was more behind the scenes special features . If you grew up in the 70s and remember watching this program you will thoroughly enjoy it! I cannot praise this Blu-ray release a enough! I really hope that Warner Home Video releases Roots The Next Generation and Roots The Gift on Blu-ray soon!

The product was great just had a hard time finding it..the Best Buy closest to me Westheimer /Highway 6 said they had one copy but couldn't find it.. So therefore I had to ride to the Galleria location where they had several copies on the shelf .. Went back to the highway 6 location a week later and they FINALLY had copies on the shelf .. Go figure .. I don't know whose responsible for ordering there Blu ray movies but they need to get it together .. I go in there weekly to buy movies cause I'm a collector and spend a ton of money with them cause they're closer to where I live .. But something has to change or else I will start ordering on line from Amazon.. That's my review!

I really loved that I could have gotten this great tale of struggle and triumph for both my brother and sister (so I bought 2) for Christmas because they are always talking about it. However, when they watched it I was informed that an episode was missing. To be exact... it is the 2nd episode where Kunta in on the boat to America as a slave; They had both seen it when it premiered as a mini-series on TV . Too bad I spent money on this and they were not happy. I'm not sure if anyone should take a chance on buying until the issue has been resolved. Great story though!

I remember first seeing ROOTS on television. I also purchased the complete series. Now I have it remastered in blu ray. It was well worth the wait to have this extraordinary series permanently in my collection. The images are a great improvement over the original DVDs. It belongs in everyone's collection. This TV series was and will always be among the greatest ever aired.

I Think everyone has either seen or heard of the classic ROOTS 7 Disc Mini-series from ABC TV in the mid-seventies. I bought it at an insanely low price of $9.99 (normally $50 to $70) was a no-brainer. Now if Best Buy would do the same for the next generation sequel that would be a fantastic conclusion to own the complete set. Thanks Best Buy

I use to watch this TV Movie series as a kid. I liked it then but didn't understand it's message. Now as an adult with my own children I felt it was neccessary for my children to know their history. I think our kids take things for granted. They need to understand the past so that they can appreciate the present.

The landmark mini-series looks a bit dated...

A true landmark when it first aired, Roots became the template for the mini-series form, and while it's fun to look at, it's a bit creaky to look at nowadays.A bit too clean looking, and strange to see O.J. Simpson playing an African native. Worth seeing if you've never seen it, but that's about it.

America has a mixed history. This is a thread in that history that speaks to our sordid past involving slavery, but also the perseverance that caused a man to rise up in the midst of great adversity. Honestly, a true American story.
