Samsung SH-S182M DVD-RW drive is BAD Quality.
Posted .No, I would not recommend this to a friendThis DVD±RW/CD-RW Drive is the WORST DVD burner I have ever owned. I had this drive installed by Best Buy Geek Squad under warranty to replace the other Samsung drive that came in my Gateway Core 2 Duo PC that I bought at Best Buy right before Christmas 2006. The original Samsung drive was bad and wasted 25-50 high quality Verbatim DVD -R 16x blanks before I had it replaced under warranty with this drive which over the last month has also wasted between 30-50 Verbatim 16x blanks due to incomplete burns or speed and write failures during the burning process or even burn process complted sucessfully but then DVD fails verification after writing. I have used Nero Ultra 7 enhanced latest version 7.10.1.0 running under Vista Home Premium with 4 Gb of DDR 2 ram on this PC. This drive is supposed to be 18x and when using verbatim 16x media it will burn at 18x according to nero but it takes 9-12 minutes which can't possibly be 18x!!! When I used IMG Burn to burn a .iso DVD image file which gives the actual speed during the entire burning process and this drive has long lead-in burn problem and it has never gone faster then 4x-8x during burning and it NEVER hits the 18x mark at all much less 16x for that matter. If you want a QUALITY DVD Burner then I highly recommend the Pioneer, Plextor, or HP DVD-RW burners sold at Best Buy and you will be satisfied but stay away from this drive unless you want to throw quality DVD-R blanks in the trash can. I plan on returning my Gateway PC to Best Buy Geek Squad very soon to have this drive replaced under warranty again and I will NOT accept this drive as a replacement and I expect a different drive installed preferrably the Pioneer or HP or Plextor instead.
