      3 Months Use ISSUES

My 5 year old got a Blu-Ray for our new tv for his birthday in August. This player was purchased new in July but not opened until September of 2015. Things worked great until a few days ago. A few days ago the player became noticeably louder while playing the DVD (both Blu-Ray and Regular DVDs) you can hear the disc spinning and the player making noises while deciphering what is on the movie. Prior to this it used to be whisper quiet and I wouldn't need to close my DVD door to shut it up while playing a movie, now I do. It's so loud that if you don't close the door and you're watching a quiet movie it will be louder than the movie itself. After that, the next day it had issues with playing a regular DVD, claimed it "couldn't read the DVD" and spit it out. I reset it via the setting reset screen and it only spit out the DVDs more!! So I reset it again and it worked that day. The next day I played a DVD again (my son is into Thomas from the Library and so it's become part of our daily routine) and it once again spit the DVD out (while still being noisy while loading/trying to play) I reset again and it worked fine. Today I decided to call up Best Buy to see if I could exchange for a new player, my thought was I would try the Sony Blu-Ray player because clearly I'm having issues with Samsung. Turns out that I CAN NOT RETURN or EXCHANGE the DVD player, the manufacturer Samsung won't let them! What a crock, it used to be the businesses job to keep the peace between the consumer and returning items, now I have to call Samsung customer support, which I did right after. Samsung customer support appears to be outsourced, big surprise there of course. So naturally I have to go through all the trouble shooting issues. She instead of having me reset from the settings screen had me press and hold the EJECT button until it reset. The DVDs play but the noise is STILL there, which I did not expect to be fixed by a reset, lets be honest I suspect its a hardware issue. So she put me on hold to find out what I can do. She claimed that because my firmware is not updated, and mind you my player has NEVER been connected to the internet nor has it ever had issues until now that I need to update my firmware. I am not pleased, she claims that the firmware will fix the noise issue, I just don't see how. That's like your car engine is making a popping sound but if you update your cars chips the popping sound will go away even though its in your engine.....yea ok. I'll try it, but I'm not buying it. So I go to Samsung's website, the website for this DVD play is "no longer there" ugh ok, so I go to chat hopefully they can help. NOPE, there is maintenance going on in the website and he doesn't know when it will be up (mind you this is the only part of the website that seems down) and that it's down on their end too so he can't email me the drivers.....which I find odd. Bottom line I didn't get this issue fixed and I've barely had the player for 3 months of total playing time. I'm irritated that I'm already having issues with this player and I can't unload it to Best Buy to get myself a new one and wash my hands of this issue. Some other notes: NO INDICATOR LIGHT!!! (my biggest issue because I mean how do I know this thing is on or off? Unless I'm on the DVD screen in my TV? What if my kid decided to turn it on, I wouldn't know and it'd be sitting there sucking up energy all day DOES NOT COME WITH HDMI cable . HARDWIRE to INTERNET ONLY aka NO WIFI Easy to install, easy to get going. Appears to play fine when it works.

I recently purchased a 4k TV and was in need of a Blu-Ray disc player so I could enjoy Blu-Ray movies that I owned and also so I could tweak settings on my new set with Blu-Ray versions of the DVE and Disney WOW discs. With the new 4k/UHD Blu-ray players coming later in 2015/2016, I had zero interest in laying down any more than absolutely necessary on a Blu-Ray player. This Samsung player fit the bill and, much to my surprise, it's a very capable player. It plays regular ol' DVD discs as well as Blu-Ray. It'll also playback BD-R and DVD-R discs, though there may be coding limitations with those formats - read the instructions for more info. Blu-Ray content is pristine coming from the player and passing through my AVR to my TV. This model does have a limited number of connections - 1 HDMI out, 1 coax/digital out - so, if your theater setup requires anything other than HDMI or Coax, then this particular unit may not work for you. This model doesn't do 3-D, either. This player does have Smart TV apps, but you will need an ethernet cable from your router to enjoy those. My particular implementation doesn't allow for that, so I can't comment on whether that works or how well it works. I didn't think WiFi was worth the additional cost and, frankly, Roku, Apple TV, and Chromecast, and many others are all FAR better at serving up online video content to a TV than all of the built-in BD player or TV apps that are currently available. My particular unit was a customer return, so I did save additional $ off the sales price. Box was in good shape, all of the accessories were there, and the unit works great. It does not have the multiple connection options or the upscaling and audio prowess of an Oppo, but it'll more than hold me over until the new UHD BD players hit the market and drop to an affordable price point.

Had to replace my Sony Bluray, and decided to give this model a try, since Samsung usually has a decent product. It did well at playing a disc. Also did an OK job of connecting to my home network via DLNA, although it seemed to take a long time to list the video files on my network server and then it seemed like it had to re-read the file list each time I accessed the server, so it sometimes took a long time to get to my video files. I liked the user interface which also allowed me to customize the main menu displayed apps (i.e., Netflix, Hulu, etc). The big problem I had was that I noticed that every time I had a disc in the player, but tried to play a file in another mode (i.e., DLNA Home Network, Internet, Streaming App) the whole unit would vibrate and make a very loud buzzing noise. In order to stop that noise you had to remove the disc from the player every time before using another mode. I returned the unit and exchanged it for another, hoping it was just a manufacturing defect. Well, the second one did exactly the same thing, so it seems like it may be a design flaw in this model. I wound up returning it and purchasing another Sony (which has actually been problem-free). If you can overlook the fact the you need to remove the discs before changing video modes, or if you don't use other video modes, this would be a good puchase for the price. If, however, you use the Bluray like most of us do, this particular unit might not be the way to go. Pay a little more for another unit. I would have some reservations about recommending this unit to everyone.

      Keeping things simple

I was looking for a bare bones Blu-ray disc player under $100 and purchased the BD-J5100 based on positive reviews. Setup involved little more than connecting the player via HDMI to my TV and following the initial onscreen setup menu prompts. I also went into the settings to set the native resolution to 720p (for my older Samsung plasma TV). This player lacks WIFI capability, but can be connected to the internet via Ethernet cable. Since I did not need to use this player as a streaming device, I will probably never use the internet features. As previous reviews have stated, this player does not have any display or indicator lights, making it impossible to tell whether the player is powered on or off without the TV being on as well. I don't mind this at all since there's no additional light source to distract from the picture on the TV screen. The player is slim, small and lightweight. Blu-ray movies look great. There is no noise from the spinning disc inside the player (so far.) The remote that comes with the player is simple. The top four buttons [Source, Power on/off, Vol + and Vol -] in the upper-right hand corner are dedicated to operating Samsung brand TVs. I don't think they can be programmed to operate other brands. I'm impressed with the quick load time for Blu-ray discs. (about 15 - 20 seconds). If you're looking for a simple, no-frills Blu-ray player for under $100, I would certainly recommend this as an option.

My husband and I bought this BluRay player as a means of avoiding cable bills and not having to continuously plug his laptop or mine into the TV for entertainment before bed each night. I have burn-up many DVD players over the past two or three years from all-night running, so I hoped stepping up to a different option would help. Unfortunately, there is not a "sleep" option on this player and it will continuously run a disc if there is one in the player itself. Additionally, though this could easily be an internet-related problem (but we haven't had issues with other devices), it sometimes completely freezes while we are watching Netflix. I would suggest either paying the extra money for the newer model or stepping your TV up to a SmartTV...that is, if you are like us and are only looking at buying a streaming BluRay player because it is the "best" of both worlds: streaming Netflix and playing DVDs/BluRays.

Admittedly, I am not a computer/electronics person. But I love watching TV, and DVDs/Blu-rays!! (I was one of those who always knew how to set the timer recordings on the original VCRs. You learn how to do what's important to you.) This Blu-ray player was purchased to go along with the 32" Samsung Smart TV in our bedroom. Electronic devices and I generally do not get along very well. Like our Smart TVs, the Samsung Blu-ray player likely has features that I don't even know about and therefore don't use. But for straightforward watching a movie, this Blu-ray player is easy to use. That is paramount with me, along with the picture quality being as good through the Blu-ray player as it is with just the TV. Sometimes you just care about the basics. And for that, the quality and price can't be beat.

When I purchased this, I knew it was going to be paired to a Samsung 4K smart tv. So, my requirements were that I didn’t want to pay for wi-fi and streaming apps like Netflix, etc. which would have been redundant to the tv’s capabilities. The apps are there, but there’s no wi-fi capability, and the lower price reflects that. On the other hand, I wanted a player that was capable of “upscaling” the resolution of whatever dvd I was playing, and the BD-J5100 does a good job there. Working in concert with the 4K smart tv, regular dvd’s appear to be in hi-def 1080p, and HD-1080p dvd’s appear to be near 4K quality. No indicator lights or display on the front panel? Who cares… when you press the remote power button, the player’s menu/control screen appears instantly on the tv. When you’re done watching the dvd, press the button to eject the disc, press the power button on the remote, and it’s off. Bottom line – it fits perfectly with the rest of my video set-up, and does everything that I need without costing me extra for bells and whistles that I don’t need.

AVOID AT ALL COSTS! This blu ray player will randomly shut off in the middle of watching and reboot to the home screen within only 6 months of owning! It does this at random and once it starts, it will do it over and over until you just stop trying all together. Tried to get the issue repaired/resolved for 4 months with Samsung, and all they can do is say that their technicians cannot duplicate the issue, so they will not do anything to try to help. We have used other devices to watch (like Xbox one) and have never had this issue with anything other than this Samsung blu ray player. I will be throwing this blu ray player away and having to spend more money to buy a new one (so sad, because it is so wasteful...). At least buy one from a company that will resolve/repair issues...or fork over the extra cash for Best Buy's warranty because you surely will need it for this one!
