Owned many phones... the Note is the best one yet!
Owned many phones... the Note is the best one yet!Posted .
My review builds upon the rave reviews for this amazing device, called the Samsung Galaxy Note. This is my first Samsung branded phone. I was a little bit worried about it, due to there being issues with the build quality of the Galaxy S II, the phone the Note is largely based off. But, upon actually holding the phone, you'll find the Note is higher quality build. I've previously owned only HTC branded smartphones, most notably the HTC Touch Pro II, EVO 4G, and EVO 3D. Having extreme issues with Sprint's network and lack of competitive phones, I knew it was time for a change and I wanted the Note after hearing so much about it. I wanted the white Note, as the black model seemed too typical, generic, and all of the other phones I've owned have been black. It was time for a change. I made a good move. The white Galaxy Note is gorgeous and looks so high-end and much more expensive than the black (or blue as Samsung claims) Note. Your first impression will most likely be a curse word said out of surprise, followed by amazement at the sheer size of the thing. You may also get a bit intimidated. Don't! For a guy, my hands aren't very large, and the note feels mostly good in my hand. It really helps that this phone is insanely thin, as with most Samsung devices. I don't know how they do it, but it's incredibly thin. Thinner than the iPod touch, even. The display is a 1280x800 HD Super AMOLED resolution, which provides an absolute stunning display! The display is higher than most other HD displays which only have 720p, so the Note's HD display is better than pretty much any other device, sans the iPhone with its retina display. The screen real estate is wonderfully huge! So large the unlike virtually every other smartphone, there are five rows of icons supported, instead of the usual four. "TouchWiz" is Samsung's user interface. I am only used to HTC's "Sense." I still think that in most ways, Sense is a bit more refined and advanced, but I'm growing to really like TouchWiz. The 1.5GHz Snapdragon process means that the Galaxy Note is extremely quick and fluid. In fact, coming from HTC devices, the Note shatters the HTC products in speed and it's very comparable to the iPhone. I want to talk about battery life. If all the phones you've ever owned have been non-iPhones and particularly HTC devices, you should be all too familiar with the horrid battery lives these smartphones provide. You may initially get pretty adequate battery life from them, but soon after, things take a huge turn for the worse. At this point, my EVO 3D can be completely drained of its battery after about 5-6 hours off the charger and literally NO use from me, whatsoever. So, even though I've heard so many raving reviews about the Note's battery life, imagine my surprise when the other day, off of one charge I got an astounding 19 hours of battery life from my Galaxy Note! This was with moderate (close to heavy) usage, including downloading many apps, web surfing, texting, a few calls, live wallpaper running in the background, and WiFi being enabled. Traditionally, all of these things spell doom for other devices. Not this phone. By the time I had decided to recharge after 19 hours, my Note still had an impressive 27% battery life left! I can't make this stuff up. That's more than impressive. This has to be the first and only smartphone, to upstage the battery life of the iPhone. Reviews online have stated the same thing. At worst, all professional reviewers agree that the Note has a battery equal to the iPhones. Some reviewers also go as far to say that the Note's battery is better than the iPhone, which I have experienced. I like the massive 16GB internal RAM. I'm so used to 8GB of RAM on-board, from HTC. I have a 16GB Class 6 microSD card that I used on my EVO. Added to my Galaxy Note, I now have 32GB of memory on this beast! Plenty of room for music, videos, apps, photos, and much more! Now, let me talk about the stylus or "S-Pen," as Samsung insists you call it. The S-Pen is not like the boring stylus you are used to from cell phones in the past. This S-Pen is intelligent and powered. You can use it to input text or even draw on the screen! The S-Pen is also pressure sensitive, which means that how light or dark your drawings are, is based on how hard you press the pen against the screen. You can also use the S-Pen to take a snapshot of whatever is on your screen, and use that snapshot to write notes and captions on it. While browsing the web, you can use the S-Pen to cut out an image you like, and attach it to an S-Memo (a built-in Galaxy Note app) and you can do all sorts of things with the image, including sending it to a friend via email or text messaging. Network/Data speeds are unprecedented, at least for me. I stay in the Washington, DC suburbs, and coming from the third largest carrier in the nation, I became accustomed to non-existent 4G and 3G data speeds that were laughable at the very least. Using AT&Ts 4G LTE network, my last network data test revealed I was getting 33.31Mbps download and 12.7Mbps upload speed. If you know anything about understanding data speeds, you know that it insanely high. Videos and web content load at a flash. I have yet to experience that annoying buffering while trying to watch videos on YouTube. Call quality has been really good in my area. AT&Ts coverage map shows I should be getting the best call quality they offer. I can hear other callers loud and clear, and other callers tell me I sound really good and clear, also. Using the Galaxy Note as a music player, is now a reality for me. I have never been able to do that with any of the other phones I've owned, because I feel that the sound quality (and video quality) didn't compare to my iPod touch. Well, Samsung has now got me singing another tune! Firstly, you can transfer almost any type of music file to the Note, such as WMA, AAC, MP3, WAV, and others. That in its self makes this phone amazing. Then, audio quality is superb! There is a function that lets you transform the sound to 5.1 stereo surround sound. It makes a huge difference! Also, if you combined the inherently good audio quality of the Note with a third party app from the "Play Shop" (formerly the "Android Market") you can transform your phone to a beast in terms of sound quality. There were songs that made me have to say "Ouch!" because they were so loud. I have never had to do that with any other phone I've owned. I am really impressed. For those people who think they might feel a little ridiculous using this phone and putting it up to your head to talk, you can always use a bluetooth headset. The bluetooth setup was literally the easiest I've ever experienced one a cell phone. Oh, and I know many people will worry about pocket ability of this giant. I can tell you, I do not wear baggy jeans, and I can easily slip this phone into my pocket and feel totally comfortable. It doesn't feel bulky and it fits perfectly. I opted to not use the generic Samsung case, as I did not find it particularly attractive or useful. Plus, I love the way my phone looks and didn't want to hide it with an ugly case. This is the first phone I've ever owned where I didn't have some sort of protection, such as a case or screen protector. One more thing about the screen... it's so big that I think I will sell my Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. It basically has no use for me, anymore. The Note can do everything an tablet or iPad can do. I even have downloaded books that I had on my Galaxy Tab, transferred to my Note, and the screen is big enough that it makes reading books on it, quite feasible. To end a very long review, so far I am totally happy with the Samsung Galaxy Note. I highly recommend it. This certainly isn't a phone for everyone, given its immense size, but I think most people will find they could work with it. My one and only gripe, is the placement of the on/off/sleep button. Most phones have this button practically located at the very top of the phone. Samsung, for whatever reason, thought it necessary to awkwardly place this button the upper-right hand corner of the device. This is at a place where most people grasp their phone to hold it or pick it up. So, you accidentally end up turning off your screen all the time. It's aggravating, but you can learn to deal with it and kind of become more aware of the positioning of the button, so it's not a huge problem anymore. Of the many pluses, the phone is super fast, beautiful, and there are so many feature built into it that will keep you amazed for a long time to come. Well done, Samsung! I can now see why you guys have become the market leader for cellular phones. Easily the best phone I had ever been proud to own!Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.

I came from using a 5" Dell Streak to this Samsung phone and the size is just about the same, but that is about the only thing in common. (I do like the Streak but now it is my son's. I just couldn't trade it in...). Here are some of the reasons I give this phone a five star rating: The Samsung is so FAST that it almost seems to be reading my mind. The screen resolution and brightness are absolutely spell binding. 4G service is almost as fast as my WI-FI. The camera with it's anti shake is amazing. Video in HD looks pro. Kindle books are easy to read on this phone. Love the stylus and the free apps to be creative. (No I would never draw a Hitler mustache on my boss's picture and send it around the room during a meeting.) Voice control: perfect interface while i'm riding my motorcycle. Listen to tunes, answer / place a phone call, dictate and send a text, have incoming texts read to me, all hands free! Just say "Hello Galaxy" and the phone responds by asking you what you want to do. Truly cool.... Battery life is the best I have ever had in a "smart" phone. Love the swype key board, got used to using it on my Dell and don't want a phone without it any more. Light weight and thin, (at least for a phone / tablet this size) with beautifully rounded edges that scream quality and attention to detail. Is the phone to big? Not for most people, only for people who insist they have to use their phone one handed, like texting while they drive. If you watch people use their phones you will see most people use two hands to operate their phones, so why put up with a tiny screen? This phone fits in my shirt pocket and is comfortable for two hand operation or one handed calls. It's not like this phone is as big as the old "bag" phones of the 80's, so I don't understand the people who whine about it being to big. I hardly use my laptop anymore and no longer desire a tablet because this.... "everything" ..unit is SOOO GOOD! Finally a phone that deserves to be called "Smart", and in my opinion, BEAUTIFUL! All BS aside, this "phone" does more than my 1 year old laptop! My laptop isn't voice controlled, doesn't have GPS, can't match the camera or video capture quality, doesn't have swype input, etc...... Buy this and give yourself thirty days to decide whether you will keep it or not. I doubt you will trade it back in! I also recommend the Samsung front cover for the phone....Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.

Hits the mark between phone & tablet Perfectly!

First off Lastone24 obviously has not done his research on this phone, though he thought he'd comment anyway. This phone has 800 lines of horizontal resolution in landscape mode. By definition, HD is 720 lines of horizontal resolution, hence the term "720p". This phone not only takes the next step up from the Galaxy S II Skyrocket, but it adds an HD screen, and the S Pen (despite Samsung's branding, is in fact a very fancy stylus). The specs speak for themselves. Unfortunately it has no NFC. However, that's not a huge draw back, as the Skyrocket's NFC has not been enabled at this point. You can't really miss something you've never had. That does speak very loudly, that this is probably not your cell phone replacement. I love the phone, but the size can make it a big difficult to always carry with you. However, if you need a phone & a tablet, there is no better compromise! Huge screen, but one of the thinnest devices on the market. Pure greatness! My reason for wanting this phone? I run a business. With the use of a portable card reader that plugs into the top of the Galaxy Note, and the S Pen, it makes for the perfect mobile P.O.S. device. Customers can swipe their card, and sign using the S Pen. You can easily take notes, handle inventory, and make changes to documents. This device is meant to get down to work. The Galaxy Note will by my Skyrocket's business companion. I can't wait!Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.

This phone is the best phone I've had ever! Size is great for reading, editing, surfing the net, all things. The speed is great on this phone and it makes for great video watching. Volume is great and clarity is great also. All the same apps plus more specialty ones for my Note. I understand that when ICS hits there will be a little something special in the stocking for Note users, looking forward to that! I find myself just tapping the speaker button when I call or receive calls for ease of use or holding it somewhat like a walkie talkie. The speaker is awesome and the reception on the other end I understand is excellent. I'm not a heavy talker so it works great for me. Only drawback is you can't use if it's a private convo in a public place, so I have to use it like a regular phone. It also keeps people from making their little remarks about it's size. I know everyone who's made that remark would give their eye teeth to be eligible for a upgrade to get one themselves! This phone is sleek and slim so it slides right into my pocket, I do take it out when sitting down, wouldn't want to squish "my precious" :) As far as battery life, as with my previous phone as well as my Note, I purchased a little charger and extra battery online (ebay) for next to nothing and keep an extra in my purse. Works fine for me! Normally don't need it but sometimes with heavy use you need it. Once you have a Note, you can't go back! Everyone else's phone looks so lame now, sometimes have to snicker to myself at the iphones and others.Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.

This will be a quick review for me. If you know the size of this device and pick one up I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's fast. Real fast. The screen is the highest resolution of any current Smartphone and the extra screen real estate takes advantage of it. Video playback (many codecs supported) is amazing. Web browsing is fantastic and very fast on LTE in my area. Camera is basically the same as the GS2 and that's alright by me as it's an excellent camera. S Pen is very cool and works very well. Don't listen to the guy before me who called it "a waste" as he has never even touched one. People like that just skew the average ratings for no reason. I went from an iPhone 4s to the Note and I'm not going back. I also picked up the Samsung OEM folio style case that replaces the back battery cover and it's pretty sweet.Sorry, there was a problem. Easily the best phone on the market. I've had it for 2 days now and its been nearly impossible to put down. The battery life is far better than any other Android phone. Especially for powering up such a big screen. I went from galaxy nexus to this phone and am very glad I did! Android OS has never ran as smooth as it does on any other phone. The inferior part to Android is its lag. But on this phone i experience little to none! This phone is by far the best in terms of great screen, intuitive functions, design, great browsing experience, usability, customizable, and overall great quality. Now I don't have to drop an extra $500 on a tablet. The size is perfect and does enough to replace my tablet.Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.

This phone is simply incredible. Picture the Samsung Galaxy S2 on steroids and that's basically what this phone is. If you are looking for a phone that is somewhat exclusive and performs well then this is your phone. I can promise that everybody and there brother will not be carrying one of these around, such is the case with the iPhone. Hands down the best phone already of 2012. Samsung has topped the market with this one!Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.

I had my eye on another Droid based phone and then saw the ad for the Samsung Note. Wow, what a phone, you might even say 'Phablet" (phone and tablet combined). I am very impressed. This phone came out 2/19 and I bought it that day. I was not sure how I would like the size of the phone, but having it for a couple of days I can say I don't mind it at all. It is blazing fast and the screen is great. All of the extra stuff you can do on this phone more than make up for the size. The pictures are clear and the sound is great. Even without that many accessories for it I don't mind. I use this to keep up with my social accounts and email and web stuff when I am out and about. If you are looking for a phone that will do it all and still give you the freedom of a Droid based system, this is the phone for you. The price is worth it for sure.Sorry, there was a problem.
