If you know what you wantPosted .
It's not going to render 3D animations in a minute or anything like that, but it is plenty quick for what it should be used for. My girlfriend uses it as her only computer, internet browsing, word processing, power point viewing, college related tasks. It also works great with skype, the webcam is ok (about on par for most built in web cams I guess) and the sound quality is actually pretty good (including the microphone audio on the other end). It is very light weight, and easy for carrying around as well. The battery life is not all that great, right around 3.5 hours when using wifi and browsing the internet, about 2.5 hours watching a movie (blu-ray) with about 75% brightness Blu-ray works quite well in my opinion. I don't know what other reviewers were experiencing to say it was so bad, but no problems for me... Even when hooked up through HDMI to a 42" HDTV at 1920x1080 while running the audio through the HDMI at the same time, watching Iron Man on blu-ray only had a few (3-5 maybe) small barely noticeable stutters (I was the only one to actually notice them) I liked the mouse, it takes some getting used to, but it's not bad. I like (and was already used to) the multi-touch functions similar to my Eee PC. But it also has the right side scroll slide like a lot of other laptops do (not clearly stated, unless you dive into the owners manual I imagine) The Integrated graphics aren't that bad, for integrated graphics, and are capable of pushing blu-ray at 1080p. It gets a Windows 7 Experience Index score of 5.4. The i3 wasn't meant to set any records, so don't buy this expecting it to be a good gaming desktop replacement or anything like that. If you know you what you want, and do your research, you won't end up buying something you don't like. This is an excellent laptop, and does what it was purchased for extremely well. I would recommend it for anyone looking for a solid laptop, but no need to go "rip your face off" fast.I would recommend this to a friend

Nothing else comparedPosted .
I've had this laptop for 3 weeks now. I had been struggling with power vs. size for a desktop replacement and did a ton of research. I'm very glad I went for size (i3 vs i7 etc). Some items I haven't seen mentioned yet : 1. The rubber feet on the bottom protrude from the chassis, they are not flush. Very nice for having the laptop on your lap, they stick to your legs at an angle. 2. Although the screen rez is 1,366 x 768, it will output 19x12 thru the HDMI port, great for hooking up to big screen TVs when traveling. There are many options for dual display. 3. I like that I can save the restore software to any removable media, not just DVD. 4. All aspects of the trackpad's sensitivity are adjustable (tap sensitivity, anti-palm settings, gestures etc). Yes the keyboard is not backlit, but that's rare at this price anyhow. 5. Blu-ray response seems quick to me, close to PS3 loading times. I found the screen was excellent, and I am very picky as I do graphic design work. People have been complaining, but if you take the time to adjust the settings to your liking, it's fine. There are also complaints about the trackpad and it's buttons. I've gotten used to it, it didn't take much time at all, and it is VERY adjustable. I do prefer the left and right buttons have a physical separation of some type, but it's really minor. The speed of this machine at this price is what sold me. Since I spent less, I can upgrade quicker to the latest and greatest in the next few years, or I have money left over to upgrade this one (such as the hard drive to SSD). That and I couldn't find any other laptop with this feature set at this price and still have Blu-ray. Highly recommended.I would recommend this to a friend

Great for writing!Posted .
I just picked this up yesterday, and it is a joy to type on. Best keyboard I've used. It's a solidly built little machine that doesn't look or feel cheap like many laptops in this price range and just below. Good price for the specs -- i3 is more than sufficient for everyday use. The screen is nice, and the 500gb hard drive will come in handy. On the flip side, the battery life is pretty bad. 2.5 hours out of the box, and that's just web browsing and working with word documents. It's also a little heavy for a 14", so if you're looking for something ultra-portable with a long battery life, this is not the laptop for you. (I've got a toshiba netbook for that, and it's fantastic). However, if you want a good looking laptop with snappy performance for everyday tasks, this is the one, particularly if you have to write a lot for work, as I do. One thing that puzzles me -- what is a blue ray drive doing on a 14" laptop? This isn't 1080p and it's only 14 inches, so I'd happily sacrifice the blue ray for a low end video card for light gaming or a slightly faster processor.I would recommend this to a friend

Great performance for the money.Posted .
Got it on sale for $629 and I'm glad I waited. It's much more affordable than other brands (HP, Dell, Sony). The built is solid with no flexing of the screen, body or keyboard and no 'creaking' sound when picked up. Love the design and color scheme. I was pleasantly surprised that there wasn't that much bloatware loaded. I did a clean install which I lost the Samsung screen savers which I liked. If you do a clean install make sure you download all the drivers and softwares at the Samsung website prior to doing it. Window 7 didn't seem to recognize the wireless card automatically. Also make sure you burn a backup disc prior to tweaking your laptop. People complain about the shiny surface and it being a fingerprint magnet but it's a minor thing and it's a given. Just get a microfiber cloth and wipe it down! It's said that battery life is 4 hours but I believe that's only achievable in power saving mode, wireless off with the screen dimmed. Playing a regular DVD on balance mode with 50% brightness and wireless off will last around 2 1/2 hours. The plus side is that the battery charges fast compared to my HP and Dell laptops.I would recommend this to a friend

Great LaptopPosted .
I reviewed this laptop online and went into the store and purchased it. The overall look and feel of the laptop is amazing. The case has a very nice and stylish finish even though it does like finger prints. The first time I tried to update windows it froze but after a restart and since then the laptop has worked like a charm. The laptop is very light and very quick and upgradable to 8 gig of ram. I have done everything possible with the laptop. I have hooked up up via HDMI to my 60" tv and the screen is amazing. Able to run multiple applications at once (installing itunes, downloading torrents, music, and converting music) with no problem. I def recomment this laptop.. I have not tested the blue ray yet but I have no worries.I would recommend this to a friend

Got a great price, would not pay morePosted .
I came into the store intending to buy the Q430. I don't need the Nvidia graphics. But I liked the aluminum case and the keyboard. I compared it with this one (R480) and kept trying to talk myself into the spending the extra dough on the Q430. I tapped a salesperson for advice and he tells me this one is on sale for $470. In store sale, they were unloading them to make room for new models. What a steal. Left me room overtop to buy some warrantee and setup conveniences, and still came in well under the Q430. My only real complaint is that every time I use it the computer looks like I ate dinner on it. "Fingerprint magnet" does not begin to describe. Blueray works fine. Comments about the build around the disk drive are accurate, the plastic is flexible there. Everywhere else the build seems sturdy. Comments about the keyboard spacebar -- that is a problem with that person's unit. I'm very fussy about my keyboard, and I believe this keyboard is the best one I've ever used. Great action, no flex, minimal noise. Better than Apple, better than Sony. I'd love to find something wrong with it other than the messy finish. But it works perfectly, it's fast, it's a nice piece of engineering, it's just dirty all the time. For $470 I'll keep cleaning it.I would recommend this to a friend

Good deal for streaming videoPosted .
This laptop was a gift for my wife who wanted to use it to stream video from the internet and show it on our big screen. I bought a gateway netbook, which just didn't have enough graphics horsepower to do the job. The folks at Bestbuy took it back and I came home with a Toshiba Satelite T135, which we liked because it was compact. It had win 7, 64 bit and a graphics card which handled the video streaming. While on vacation, it started overheating in a cabin in Northern NM. It needed factory service, so the Toshiba tech recommended we return it to Bestbuy since we had it less than 2 weeks. When we got to Colorado, I returned it to Bestbuy and got the Samsung. We've had it about a month and no issues with overheating. It streams video better than the previous Toshiba and it comes with a built-in blu-ray player with an HDMI output. We can watch Hulu, ESPN or any other TV show and the picture is great. Battery life could be better, but it will go about 3 hours. Plugging in a mouse messes up the driver for the touchpad, so you lose the higher functions such as the 2 finger scrolling, but that can probably be fixed. The high gloss finishes shows fingerprints, but the problems are very minor. This is a good machine. My wife likes the jazzy looks and the integral touchpad with the little blue lights.I would recommend this to a friend

GREAT BUY!!!Posted .
This laptop is nothing short of perfect. For $629 (now even cheaper), how can you go wrong? It has a fast processor, great graphics and a good size hard drive. Not to mention, it has a Blu-ray player built in. Try to find a laptop with all of these specs for a better price. Samsung is quickly jumping to the top of the best laptop manufacturers. Some reviews of the r480 criticize the keypad, but I love it. I also love the look and color of this laptop. It is something different from the boring black and silver look. The island style keyboard is amazing. The keys feel sturdy and look great. Overall, this is a great laptop and a great buy.I would recommend this to a friend
