There are enough vintage Santana songs, "Fillmore East," "Suenos," "Blues Magic," "Echizo," & "Leave Me Alone," to please one of Santana's original fans who has grown away from the directions he has taken over the years. Greg Rolie, Neal Schon, Michael Carabello, and Michael Shrieve, et al have reconstituted to provide new, yet authentic, mesmerizing renditions of what they once shared together. Neal Schon's guitar work perfectly compliments the Master's with distinction! I only wish Greg Rolie only performed on his first organ, leave synthesizers for the upstarts: you're still great Greg! Percussionists M&M still rock! "If you love Rock & Roll & Afro-Cuban Santana's style, you've come to the right place!"

The album reunites the early 1970s classic lineup of Carlos Santana, Gregg Rolie, Neal Schon, Mike Carabello and Michael Shrieve and marks the first time in 45 years – since 1971's multi-platinum classic Santana III – that the quintet has recorded together. Joining the core Santana IV band in the studio are current Santana members Karl Perazzo (percussion) and Benny Rietveld (bass), with vocalist Ronald Isley guesting on two cuts. It is immediately apparent that this group has learned a few things since their last effort. This is a tasty and obviously Santana album.

This may be the core of the 70's Santana band, but they don't quite reach the levels of the premier Santana...the first four albums for most fans. The musicianship is excellent as you would expect, Greg Rolie's vocals are as good as ever, but the lyrics seemed forced, and for the most part pretty silly. Not sure what they were thinking with Ronald Isely stuff...just seems out of place. Still, there are some cookin' tracks here...but maybe a few too many stinkers. The Carlos / Neil Schon chemistry is still golden.

Not Quite The Original Santana Sound

This recording gathered the key members of the original Santana Band. The theory was good, but the execution was not quite there. A few of the tracks are reminiscent of the early Santana sound, but most are closer in sound to the late '70s/early '80s incarnation of the band. This album lacks the percussive fire of the early albums, and Greg Rolie's voice shows its age. However, the playing is solid and the songs are enjoyable. If you like Santana, get this and you won't be disappointed. Just don't expect a time travel experience.

Derivative Of Past Triumphs Con Fuego (With Fire)

Santana homed in on perfection with its initial quartet of albums. The bad news about latest comeback disc: The band is competing with its own past triumphs, and a fair share of the material harks back to specific songs in their catalog. The good news: Everyone plays with convincing fire, especially the double-threat lead guitarists. No sign of geezer-dom here. Longtime fans should be pleased. I was happy I gave this a shot. Play it again Carlos!

This Santana album took me back to the beginning of the epic sound of his sownd of his classic guitar style and the keyboards and original drums and bongos of his backup group. There were songs on this newer album that reminded me of his first album. Even though years later their more polished with that old school Santana sound. Have not taken it out of the car CD player since I bought it.

A return to their roots, featuring the reunion of the best version of the band (or most of them), is never a bad thing when it comes to Santana. While some of the grittiness and energy may be not be there anymore, there is confidence here from grizzled vets who know what they're doing. That mix of blues and Afro-Cuban rhythms is as hot as ever. I'm not a fan of the spacey, fusion jams, but when they get down to business they still have it!

    Worth The Wait

It took 45 years for this Santana lineup to return to the studio, but it was well worth the wait. Carlos Santana along with Gregg Rolie, Neal Schon, Michael Carabello and Michael Shrieve recreate that classic sound of the first three Santana band albums of the late 60's & early 70's. While sonically there is little that is new, the passion and musicianship these veterans bring to the material is palpable and stands up to repeated listenings.
