    Synopsis

    Savages
Oscar-winning director Oliver Stone adapts author Don Winslow's best-selling novel into this all-star ensemble crime drama about a pair of peaceful, Laguna Beach marijuana dealers who are targeted for extortion by the ruthless Mexican Baja cartel. Ben (Aaron Johnson) is a devout Buddhist and dedicated philanthropist, and his best friend Chon (Taylor Kitsch) is a former mercenary who trained as a Navy SEAL. They may not seem like major drug dealers, but together they make a comfortable living selling top-quality marijuana. And they share more than just a profitable business; their mutual girlfriend O (Blake Lively) is more than enough woman for the two ambitious young entrepreneurs to handle. But just as Ben and Chun are feeling like they're on top of the world, their blissful life of lawless hedonism threatens to yield dire repercussions. The Mexican Baja cartel wants a piece of the action, and their cruel leader Elena (Salma Hayek) has dispatched her top hatchet man Lado (Benicio Del Toro) to ensure that she gets it. When the cartel kidnaps Ophelia and threatens to kill her unless Ben and Chun comply, the desperate pot dealers enlist the aid of a shady DEA agent (John Travolta) to try and avert a tragedy. Emile Hirsch and Uma Thurman also star. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Can two men share a woman and stay friends? Can a small, independent group of marijuana dealers take on a Mexican cartel? Has Oliver Stone lost his touch? We are given a brief history of two of the lead characters, Ben and Chon (played by Aaron Johnson and Taylor Kitsch) by their girlfriend and the film’s narrator O (short for Ophelia, played by Blake Lively). Ben (Johnson) is a college graduate who majored in business and botany. Chon (Kitsch) is a veteran who returned from Afghanistan with the seeds that became an extremely potent form of marijuana and the foundation of their successful business. Ben contributes a great deal of his income to worthy causes and travels extensively. While he’s away, O and Chon receive a video containing numerous severed heads and chainsaw. They fear Ben has been killed until he returns home a short time later. They had a scheduled meeting with the cartel and so, they go ahead with it. The cartel representatives propose that Ben and Chon join their organization, but rather than consider their offer, they say they take the time they’ve been given to consider it and make plans to flee the country. A DEA agent named Dennis (played by John Travolta) tells them that the partnership is the best option. They disagree but, before they can leave the country, O is kidnapped. Ben and Chon hear this directly from Elena Sanchez, the leader of the cartel who ordered it. Elena (played by Salma Hayek) tells the two men that she intends to hold O hostage until they honor the terms of their agreement. During that time, she’s held prisoner amid miserable surroundings and guarded by a cartel henchman who goes by Lado (played by Benicio del Toro). Now, regardless of what anyone might say about its historical accuracy, or lack thereof, I greatly enjoyed JFK. Same goes for Wall Street, Nixon, The Doors and Born on the Fourth of July. I thought Any Given Sunday was alright, but nowhere near as good as the others I’ve mentioned. I don’t know if this movie’s failure is something to be blamed on Stone, the actors or the source material, but the story didn’t really go anywhere and the characters were completely unrealistic. I’m not saying I won’t watch it again, but I certainly won’t pay for the opportunity.

      REVENGE AND VIOLENCE

Savages boils down to a revenge film, but it's tarted up with so many extraneous plot machinations and stylistic flashiness that the grittiness of the core storyline gets lost at times. Still, this is one of Stone's most gorgeously shot recent films (if you don't mind the occasional decapitation, random shooting, and body being set on fire). The film is relentlessly breathless, which actually helps it overcome some of its dramatic stumbles, but its attempts to briefly interject some humor (mostly courtesy of Travolta's character) never seem nearly as funny as del Toro and Hayek playing not just to the second balcony, but evidently to some far off planet. Those who can stomach the mayhem and who won't mind the logical inconsistencies of this film may want to check it out on style points alone. Others may want to recycle their old VHS of JFK instead—it actually makes more sense than this film a lot of the time.

If you have ever watched a movie about drug cartels then save your money buying this movie. Blake Lively plays herself as she does in every role, Benico Del Torro gives a bad impression of a Mexican immigrant drug thug and John Trovolta shines only when he's eating- that's the only believable performance from him. I like Selma Hayek in this movie; her character is likable even though is she a ruthless, blood hungry and sensitive ruler. I don't have to tell you the ending- you've already seen it.

This film is a classic. Did it receive the hype and acknowledgment that it deserves? Probably not. This is a film that is just fantastic! The story is weird, quirky, but engaging. It makes you ask yourself questions, why are the characters doing what they're doing, what motivates them? How does that reflect on myself? The visual storytelling is fantastic, you can tell alot of time and attention to detail was put into every single shot you see and sound that you hear. Truly a sensory overload!

The movie moves along at a brisk pace and has some good action set pieces that make it highly watchable. There are some flaws however, the story can be odd at times with strange character motivations and sometimes random scenes pop up. There is a good amount of momentum to the movie and it can be intense at points which make it a good movie to watch. Oliver Stone has returned to some of his old form but it is definitely not his greatest work. Still, the movie is highly watchable and can be enjoyed.

I was hoping this would be a great movie, as I had seen the previews and it looked interesting and different. The plot itself was pretty good, but the Salma Hayek character was at times too friendly and it made the ruthless parts of that character less believable. I know other movie villains also have balanced friendly/charming and ruthless, but this one didn't hold up. I think of the Anthony Quinn character in Revenge, for how much more menacing and vindictive a 'bad guy' could be.

This movie has a good plot, it keeps you guessing throughout. We didn't know what to expect, and ended up really enjoying it.. Best Buy only has a rating with whole stars, we would rate this a 3.5 star movie. It's not the best movie ever, but it's not just mediocre either....like I said, good plot along with good acting. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but I definitely recommend it.

I stole this review, but it says it all. Overall, I just don't think this was a very good film. I don't think that Stone felt entirely comfortable with what he was doing here, trying at times to be Tarantino but failing miserably. And likewise, I think that if this film had been in the hands of Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez, it likely would have come out much better, perhaps even great.
