    Synopsis

    Scrooged
A darkly comic and surreal contemporization of Charles Dickens's A Christmas Carol, this effects-heavy Bill Murray holiday vehicle from 1988 sees the former SNL funnyman assuming the role of television executive Frank Cross, the meanest and most depraved man on earth. Cross will stoop to unheard of levels to increase his network's ratings -- even if it means mounting outrageous programs to retain an audience, such as "Robert Goulet's Cajun Christmas" and Lee Majors in "The Night the Reindeer Died," with an AK-47-toting Santa. Cross plots his foulest move, however, for the Christmas holiday, when he will force his office staff to mount a live production of A Christmas Carol on national television -- and thus work through Christmas Eve. Cross's life is turned upside down with visits from three ghosts: a craggy-faced cabbie known as The Ghost of Christmas Past (David Johansen); the sugar-plum fairy Ghost of Christmas Present (Carol Kane) (who gets her jollies by bonking Frank across the face with a toaster oven); and, eventually, the caped, headless Ghost of Christmas Future, who will send Frank sliding into a crematory oven -- just before he gives the sleazoid one last chance to redeem himself. Along the way, the spirits carry Frank to scenes from his past, present, and future (per Scrooge) and impart a glimpse of how he became so thoroughly rotten. The radiant Karen Allen co-stars as Frank's girlfriend, Claire Phillips, and the film packs in cameos from countless celebrities -- among them, Mary Lou Retton, John Houseman, Jamie Farr, and, in a truly grisly and tasteless bit, John Forsythe. Richard Donner directs, from a script credited to the late Michael O'Donoghue and Mitch Glazer. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

I remember seeing this movie in the theaters at age 14 on Christmas night when it came out. It's a hilarious twist on the Charles Dickens classic and Bill Murray is downright perfect for the role. He is snarky, smug, sarcastic as a horrible boss that could care less about anybody but himself. Then of course he's visited by the 3 ghosts and his outlook on life changes for the best. Carol Kane's cameo as the Ghost of Christmas Present is the funniest part, in my opinion. I watch this movie with my family every Christmas season.

What else can be said that hasn't already been said about this late 80's Yuletide classic? It's become a staple amongst moviegoers and cinema fans alike every holiday season and for good reason. It's a film that take's the classic Dickens tale and updates it with a great deal of style and flair. Bill Murray is a joy to watch, even when he's demeaning his co-workers, and the remainder of the ensemble cast doesn't fall short either! The Blu Ray unfortunately is lacking in pretty much every department as far as extras go, but provides a solid video/audio presentation. This is a film that deserves better! If the price is right and you don't have the DVD, snag it, if not, I'm sure a better edition is down the road somewhere!

I mostly got this to get the digital copy to insure I have the almighty Bill Murray on the go, because when this movie was made, they couldn't fathom the high definition that is our standard today, so the blu ray copy isn't necessary, although it is pretty sweet. The holidays aren't complete without watching this film at least once in my house, and this is the best version out there. The digital copy insures I get to enjoy this whenever, wherever, holidays or not, so this is truly a must have for the movie collection, and if you're not a Bill Murray fan, you don't really have any business watching movies in the fist place ;o)

I'm not a huge Christmas movie fan, overall. I like a few but notice that half of the selections my wife and I grab out each year to watch are just set around Christmas; Gremlins, Die Hard, etc. This was the last Christmas movie on my list to get that I like to watch leading up to Christmas morning. It seems it's on Netflix often but I've also noticed it getting taken down often during the season people actually want to watch it so I finally just grabbed the DVD. Sure, it's yet another take on the often redone A Christmas Carol. It's a fun take on it, though. It's crass and a little raunchy but it works for me.

This is a hilarious take on Dickens' classic. Murray is great as the modern day Scrooge. All of the actors are great in this besides Murray: Alfre Woodard, Karen Allen, and all of the ghosts are great. My favorite ghost is the Ghost of the Past- he's hysterical. This movie is inappropriate for kids, though. I first saw a relatively cleaned up version of this movie in 1996 when I was nine, and I really enjoyed it. So, just be aware that the full edition of this movie is for teens and adults. Anyway, it's just not Christmas without this hilarious, and I think, the most successful reinterpretation of Dickens' work.

If you're A Christmas Carol & 80s comedy fan, this is a must add to your annual Christmas DVD viewing. Bill Murray is at his over-the-top best as an obnoxious, politically incorrect, TV exec (aka Ebeneezer Scrooge), and has an excellent supporting cast (Robert Mitchum, John Forsythe, David Johansen, Carol Kane, & Bobcat Goldthwait, and of course, Karen Allen, to name a few). To many 80s references to count so those not familiar will miss some of the humor. Still a great laugh after all these years. Celebrate your Christmas holiday with Bill & friends!

Every year I do a month long Christmas movie marathon and watch a different movie each day in December. A couple of friends Suggested this movie since I had never seen it. It is basically a modernized version of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol with a different script. I wasn't in love with this movie but I would consider watching it again in. the future when I'm bored with the other versions of A Christmal Carol.

This year my boys were FINALLY old enough to watch one of my favorite holiday movies EVER! Bill Murray is a scream and there's an amazing supporting cast. I wouldn't suggest it for kids under 12 (they wouldn't understand most of the really funny parts anyway) and some of the pop culture references are dated but it really doesn't matter - - one of Bill Murray's best!
