PSA: Will NOT work as PS4 extended storage

I'm writing this review mostly to warn others thinking about getting this as an external hard drive to use with their PS4 now that the 4.50 update has hit. Apparently, because of the "hub" part - the fact that it has 2 USB ports - the PS4 will refuse to use it as an external hard drive. When you try to format it to be used as extended storage, you'll get the error code CE-41899-1, which when looked up on https://support.us.playstation.com/articles/en_US/KC_Article/PS4-External-HDD-Support means you should "Connect the USB storage Device directly to the PS4." Evidently because of the USB ports, the way the drive is set up there isn't a "direct" connection being made. Since this seems to be more Sony's fault than Seagate though (for not allowing it's use, and for not being clear to begin with that this is the case), I'll give it 4 stars. Sounds like an amazing hard drive, but not the one I apparently need.

Earlier Version - Nice, and now with USB ports

I purchased what appears to be the earlier version that does not have the nice USB ports on the front. These were being sold for $69 and are sold out. The only difference appears to be the lack of the USB on the front. I did some speed tests on my 2017 MacBook Pro 15" i7 TouchBar. Using a USB-C to USB-3 converter, I tested using BlackMagic on the Mac. The results were quite surprising. I tested all formats that I could produce from Mac OS Journaled to MSDOS and ExFAT, including the new AFS format. Posted are the screen snapshots of the AFS and the ExFAT tests. You will be surprised. One was "I'm not sure if I believe it" fast. I would presume that the same drive mechanism that I have is in this Seagate unit but I have not verified. If it is, expect a nice drive.

Finally Seagate has come out with an external drive that has a hub in it. You can finally daisy chain drives without going all the way back to a hub or the back of your computer. Sure helps with the cable mess behind one's desk! Now let's hope they're looking into making them wireless! I have stayed away from drives bigger than 2Tb for the simple fact that if it dies, you're out one HUGE amount of data... but the technology has improved, so I'm more at ease with the bigger capacities! The ONLY thing I might suggest to Seagate would be to at least ventilate the cases better, or put some sort of fan in or on them. On this 4Tb drive, there are only a few holes on the bottom, but heat rises, so wouldn't the top be a better place for holes?? Personally, I strap an external fan to the outside with rubber bands so it doesn't ever shut down because of a thermal overload. Sure it looks clunky, but it works, and it doesn't void the warranty like drilling the holes into the case or opening it up to the atmosphere!

The Seagate external drive is compact with a low profile design. It is virtually silent to the point that I usually double check to make sure it's powered on. Plugged into a USB 3 port in my desktop I noticed file transfer rates of up to 39 megabytes per second. I also tried it in a USB 2 port and the transfer speeds were only up to 8 megabytes per second even though USB 2 is rated at higher transfer speeds. It must be the way it read/writes to the older port. If you don't have a USB 3 port on your computer you're not going to be happy with this drive. While plugged into the USB 3 port I was able to copy 90 plus gigabytes very quickly. I received no read or write errors during the entire process and completely satisfied with the overall performance.

I bought this drive because my old (using the term loosely, it was only 14 months old) Western Digital external hard drive started clicking and needed to have disk repair run on it almost daily. In the last few years it seemed that WD wasn't the bulletproof hard drive they used to be, so I decided to gamble on Seagate (in the past I have had problems with Seagate drives). Setup is very easy, it was picked up right away by my Mac. Since I only have USB 2.0 in the iMac I was using this on but both my old WD drive and this drive have USB 3.0, I was able to connect the old drive to the hub USB ports on the front of the unit and copy my data drive to drive at USB 3.0 speeds. There is really nothing more I can say, it just works, it's fast, it's quiet and my data is there.

Great Hard drive in general. Speed is great sometimes. Good others. That's my only real complaint. The speed is not consistent. You can see 100Mb per sec sometimes and 10Mb per at others. Not sure if this is normal use case or not for a spinning disk drive. It generally reads and writes at about 50Mb per sec which is plenty fast. That said, It works well. Love the drag and drop nature of the drive. I edit videos off of it for my YouTube channel, and it works great. Would I buy this again? Yup. Check out my YouTube review below. Just last week a buddy and I were discussing the fact that you really couldn't daisy chain these external drives, then I came across this one from Seagate, so I bought one! My only concern is that with no ventilation holes but a few in the bottom of the case it will shut down on a thermal overload to save itself from burning up. So I strap a double hard drive fan to the outside of the case! It looks clunky, but it does work! I know they don't put fans in these drives because of size restrictions, and those tiny little fans don't have a very long lifespan anyhow, but since heat rises, a few holes on the TOP of the drive might help immensely! And I'm SURE that drilling holes in the case would probably void the warranty, and also opening it up definitely would!

I have a lot of portable hard drives for many things, but after loosing some important documents off my computer, I decided to purchase a good desktop hard drive. You can't put a price on saving and securing years of photos/videos and a huge music collection, but this hard drive is a solid purchase. I love how it has two usb ports on it, so I can charge my devices and connect them to my computer, or I can back-up directly to the drive. Haven't figured that out but i'm sure it'll be a good idea soon. 4 terabytes is plenty big enough for me, for now, so I partition 1tb to be my backup, and 3tb for storage. I'm sure if I treat this drive properly, it will last me years just sitting on my desk.
