TENS Units & Muscle Stimulators

An electric muscle stimulator, or TENS unit, is a popular device for those who are focused on optimal personal health and wellness. TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and is a mode of therapy that uses a minor electrical current to activate muscles like those you might use during strength training. This type of therapy is designed to speed up healing by increasing circulation in the affected area. TENS machines can also help you manage pain by alleviating symptoms of chronic conditions and new injuries alike. While massagers can be great for general soreness, stimulator machines are also designed to manipulate the nervous system, which can promote even faster recovery and pain management. 

There are several different types of electrical muscle stimulators. Some use individual reusable electrode pads placed on the area that needs relief, and you control them with a connected device. Others are all-in-one wraps for your knees or back where the electrodes are concealed within the padding of the unit. There’s also the option to add heat to the treatment with models that offer this feature. TENS devices run on alkaline batteries, so be sure to keep a supply on hand to avoid running out of power when you need it most. Because you might need relief when you’re away from home, muscle stimulation machines are small enough to carry in your work bag each day or in your weekender bag for overnight trips, and many are FSA/HSA eligible. Make your treatment time as relaxing as possible by turning on a white noise machine in the background, or by playing soothing music on your noise-cancelling headphones. If you happen to fall asleep because you’re so comfortable, there’s an automatic shutoff feature for your safety.
