How routers work.

A router connects—usually by an Ethernet cable—to a modem, a device that serves as the bridge between computers and the analog signal used on communication lines. It then creates and broadcasts a wireless network to your home or office.

Router technology has been constantly improving over the years to provide faster speeds and more bands. Wi-Fi 7 routers are the newest and fastest routers on the market. They increase speed by reducing latency and having extremely high throughput. However, you don’t always need the latest technology to be satisfied. Wi-Fi 6E routers and Wi-Fi 6 routers provide very fast and efficient wireless speeds at a much lower price point.

The number of bands provided by a router influences how many devices it can support at the same time. While dual-band routers are sufficient for many homes, you may want a tri-band router if you work from home or have a lot of smart home devices or other technology that relies on a wireless connection.

Choosing the best router for your network.

The best routers for you will meet your Wi-Fi needs and your budget. You might want a modem and router combo that unites the two essential devices into one, or you might want to purchase each separately. Also, remember that speed isn’t everything. While Wi-Fi 6 and 7 routers are the fastest available, they have smaller network coverage areas than some earlier models because they use higher frequencies. So, they may not always be the best routers for the job, depending on your space and budget.

If you have a large home, you could benefit from multiple Wi-Fi access points, a Wi-Fi extender or a mesh Wi-Fi system with multiple Wi-Fi routers throughout your home. You can also use a 5G router, which creates a wireless network by connecting to a 5G cell service like a mobile hotspot does.
