Chromebooks are a great option for people looking at laptops who want a fast, lightweight machine with a very stable operating system and a set of programs that accomplish many of the common tasks they ask of their computers – all for a very reasonable price.

Chromebooks are different from many conventional laptops:

They use the Google Chrome operating system rather than macOS or Windows.
Chromebooks usually have a smaller hard drive but take advantage of large cloud-based storage.
Chromebooks have a paired-down suite of programs that still take care of popular needs like web browsing, writing documents and sending email.

Chromebooks are just like any other laptop when it comes to accessories and peripherals, however. You can use a laptop mouse with a Chromebook, hook up printers to it, and of course use your favorite laptop bag or padded sleeve.

The Chrome operating system (or “OS”) that comes installed on Chromebooks is generally smaller in size and uses less system resources because it takes advantage of web-based programs for many common computing tasks like word processing. But don’t worry: you don’t always need an internet connection to get work done – many programs have an offline mode. What is important to keep in mind, however, is that many traditional third-party desktop programs can’t be loaded onto a Google Chromebook. So, if you want to use your laptop for resource-intensive computing with a piece of software like Microsoft Office that’s only made for Windows and Mac, you’ll want to look elsewhere.

One of the most important differences in the range of Chromebook laptops we carry at Best Buy is the amount of storage space included in the machine. You can usually buy more cloud (web-accessed) storage, and sometimes you can add more physical hard drive space, but in general, you’ll want to pick a Chromebook that matches your storage needs. If you keep everything on the web and don’t download a lot of programs, you can probably get by with one of the smaller 16GB versions. If you want to keep a lot of photos or music on your device, on the other hand, you’ll want to look at Chromebooks in the 32GB+ range.
