Lamps

Lamps vary greatly by size, style and design. The general categories include floor lamps, table lamps, desk lights and reading lights. In many of these categories, you can choose between traditional lamps and smart lamps which you can control via an app on your phone, tablet or other device instead of using a switch.

Conveniently, you can make just about any lamp a smart lamp with the addition of a smart light bulb. You can even install smart light bulbs in most permanent fixtures, giving you remote control over your lighting. And, if you opt for bulbs with color variation, you can adjust the hue to match your mood or needs.

Depending on your needs, you might consider a lamp with certain features. For example, a lamp with adjustable height is useful if you need versatility. Battery-powered table lamps are handy if you want something portable that you can use in different settings.

Arranging the right lamps in your space can create a much more pleasing aesthetic than relying on just overhead lighting. Make your bedroom or living room cozier with table lamps next to the couch or bed. Brighten a corner of the room with a well-placed floor lamp, or make it easy to work in your home office with a desk lamp.

Your activities will dictate the design you choose for a specific spot. Need to light a general space? Try a set of floor lamps. For reading or a sitting area, you may want table lamps—or a floor lamp that incorporates an additional reading light (sometimes called a mother-daughter floor lamp).

If you would like to lower your electric bill, choose LED bulbs for your light fixtures. LED lights both draw less power than incandescent bulbs and provide more hours of illumination during their lifetime. You can also save energy by using smart lighting that is programmed to turn off at a certain time.
