Keep your computer cool with a PC fan.

How does a computer case fan work?

A computer case fan keeps your computer cool by circulating hot air out of the computer case and cooler air into it — just like any other fan. A case fan attaches to either the back or sides of a computer tower case and into the motherboard to prevent computer components from overheating. The overheating of a CPU can cause a computer to shut down unexpectedly or repeatedly, so you’ll want to keep it cool with a fan. These case fans are ideal for PCs and desktops because laptops usually have fans built in, or you can add an external laptop cooling pad for additional air intake and exhaust.

Computer case fans quietly and powerfully displace the warm air and can vary in rates measured in cubic feet per minute, or CFM. The higher a computer fan’s CFM, the more air it dispels. Most of the PC fans at Best Buy are in the 50–59 CFM range, which will easily do the job for most computers, but you can find computer fans with CFM above 80. Keep in mind that while higher CFMs do mean more airflow, the trade-off can mean a louder case fan. In general, 70 CFMs and above constitute a “high” airflow.

Some computer fans also feature an antivibration mechanism to help with stability. Computer cases have dedicated areas where you can input these fans. You will need to check the specs of your PC to see just where these PC cooling fans can be placed and what size you’ll need. In addition to size, you may also consider case fans with RGB lighting, which are popular computer fans for gamers and anyone looking to add a little extra style to their computer setup. A computer case with RGB lights looks especially great in a completely clear case or one with clear panels.

Do you need a case fan or a CPU fan?

The main difference between a case fan and CPU fan is that a CPU fan or heatsink mounts directly on top of a CPU, whereas a case fan can be placed at various locations within the entire computer case. While a case fan may seem less efficient because of this, one of its main advantages is that it can cool more components in the computer case apart from just the CPU. You may want to look in to multiple computer case fans (and you’ll see many of these fans prepackaged this way) in order to cool a larger area than a CPU cooler; these case fans either intake or exhaust the air, so air is continually moving through the case and not stagnant. Case fans are generally less expensive, too, because of the simple fan functionality. However, don’t be fooled by the simple setup of a PC fan. Computer case fans are designed for one simple task — to make cooling your computer as efficient as possible.
