When deciding between a fire pit and outdoor fireplace, one key difference is that fire pits can be moved around your outdoor space. Another difference is that outdoor fireplaces require a chimney. This might require a larger investment on the front end, but outdoor fireplaces can also be customized. 

If a metal fire pit or outdoor fireplace isn’t the right fit for your space, there are other options such as a fire column, fire bowl or fire pit table. Fire columns heat efficiently, while providing considerable heat output. Tall like a patio heater, fire columns are a stunning addition to your landscape and typically use a propane tank instead of natural flame so they’re easy to maintain.

Fire bowls are like round pits but have a smaller footprint. Some fire bowls can simply sit on a table and sometimes are even referred to as a table fire or personal fire. A fire bowl is perfect for small balconies. Fire pit tables are another great solution for small spaces because they do double duty by functioning as ambiance and a tabletop. You can also choose from round or rectangular fire tables.

Two of the most popular styles of fire pits are wood fire pits and gas fire pits. There are benefits to both types of fire pits, so it just comes down to personal preference. For example, if your ideas of backyard fun in the summer is enjoying bonfires with the family, but don’t love the smoky smell, a gas fire pit gives you all the beauty and heat of a fire but none of the scent, making it a great smokeless option. You can also adjust the flame height at any time, and enjoy the steady flame that propane provides. Keep in mind, you’ll need a propane tank to fuel a gas fire pit.

If you love the crackling sound of a fire, you’ll want a wood fire pit. Wood fire pits evoke more of a campfire-like feel. With a wood fire pit, you’ll need to stock up on firewood. Some models include a fire poker. If yours doesn’t include a poker, you should consider getting one because it’ll help you maintain the wood you have in a fire. Having to maintain a wood fire is one reason why they require more attention than a gas fire pit.
