Buying Car Subwoofers

Types of Subwoofers

If you want to add quality audio and a full bass range to your vehicle, car subwoofers can improve the sound of your existing car speakers. There are several types of car subwoofers available, including component subs, enclosed subs, powered subwoofers and vehicle-specific subs.

If you buy a component sub, you'll need to mount it in a subwoofer box. You'll also need a car amplifier to power the sub.

An enclosed sub comes with a subwoofer pre-mounted into a box. You'll still need to add a car amplifier to power the sub.

A powered sub includes an amplifier and subwoofer in an enclosure for an all-in-one system. Most powered subs are compact and won't take up a significant amount of room in your car, but small drivers and amplifiers mean that the bass won't be as loud as you'd get from most component or enclosed subs.

A vehicle-specific sub is created to fit your vehicle make and model. They are available either as powered or unpowered subs.

Choosing the Best Subwoofer for Your Car

If you want to customize your car audio for the best sound and bass, your best option may be to choose a component or enclosed sub. You'll have multiple options to choose from; however, you'll need to be able to find the right parts for your system that work together.

If you want a subwoofer system that's ready to install out of the box, you may want to choose a powered sub that's specifically made for your vehicle. This will take the guesswork out of finding parts that work together and fit in your car.
