    Synopsis

    Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
Based extremely loosely on the Stephen Vincent Benet story Sobbin' Women," Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is one of the best MGM musicals of the 1950s. Most of the story takes place on an Oregon ranch, maintained by Adam Pontabee (Howard Keel) and his six brothers, played by Jeff Richards, Russ Tamblyn, Tommy Rall, Mark Platt, Matt Mattox, and Jacques d'Amboise (it is no coincidence that five of those six boys are played by professional dancers). When Adam brings home his new bride Milly (Jane Powell), she is appalled at the brothers' slovenliness and sets about turning these unwashed louts into immaculate gentlemen. During the boisterous barn-raising scene, the brothers get into a scuffle with a group of townsmen over the affection of six comely lasses: Virginia Gibson, Julie Newmeyer (later Newmar), Ruth Kilmonis (later Ruth Lee), Nancy Kilgas, Betty Carr, and Norma Doggett (yep, most of the girls are dancers, too). Yearning to become husbands like their big brother, they ask Adam for advice. Alas, he has been reading a book about the abduction of the Sabine Women (or, as he puts it, the Sobbin' Women); and, in order to claim their gals, Adam explains, the boys must kidnap them--which they do, after blocking off all avenues of escape. Vowing to remain on their best behavior, the boys make no untoward advances towards their reluctant female guests--not even during one of the coldest winters on record. Comes the spring thaw, the angry townsfolk come charging up the mountain, demanding the return of the stolen girls (who, by this time, have "tamed" their men). A happy ending is ultimately had by all in this delightful if politically incorrect concoction. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

      My Favorite Musical

When I'm down, I watch the barn-raising scene and immediately feel better. There's nothing delicate about the dancing -- it's sheer power, agiility and elegance. "I'm a Lonesome Polecat," on the other hand, is laugh-out-loud funny. Howard Keel (Adam) and Jane Powell (Milly) are the putative stars of the movie but they really just provide the basic plot device. Watching Benjamin, Caleb, Daniel, Ephraim, Frank and Gabriel woo and win their girls is where all the fun is. It's as politically incorrect as can be, but there's a sweet innocence to it that makes it inoffensive. The video quality of the DVD is very good and, considering the movie is over 50 years old, they managed to provide excellent extras.

Seven Brides For Seven Brothers is a classic musical in the grand tradition of big casts, big sets, big music, big drama, and big fun. Well worth a watch of this one if you like Oklahoma! or any of the other big musicals of the era. The product itself is one DVD in a super-flimsy plastic case. The wraparound refers to a disc 2, that is not included. This item is not the special edition/anniversary version with all of the special extras released for the 50th anniversary of the movie. It does have the usual commentary and such as bonus material, but not the "extra" extras of the special edition. Price is competitive with any of the major online shops.

      Best Classic

This classic is both entertaining and witty. The lyrics are both clean and mesmerizingly humourous at times. The opening song by Howard Keel will grab your attention and imagination as he searches for a wife before harvest! The dance numbers are unforgetable and well choreographed. The barn raising dance will entertain even skeptics with men dancing on 2x4's! For musical enthusiasts or families wanting good clean musicals for their children this movie is a must. My only criticism being the unrealistic side of the movie. Finding a woman to marry you in one day and her new brothers-in-law finding love at first sight in one day is unrealistic, but ultimately not harmful.

If you enjoy musicals, then Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is a must for any movie collection. It is one of those diamond in the rough movies that the big wigs of Hollywood never thought would be much of anything an yet it earned 5 academy awards in 1955 and won for Best Music. It's just a classic that should be cherished and enjoyed but everyone. Additionally, I am a part time nanny and the 7 year old little girl who I take care of loves to watch old movies. This has become one of her favorites, along with Meet Me in St. Louis. You have to agree, she's got good taste. Buy this DVD. It's worth it.

... it was a gift for my better half so I'm probably not the one to give a review of how good/bad the movie is. However, the technical aspects of the movie are that it's in standard def (i.e.720x480) so if you're used to Blu-ray or 4KUHD you're going to have to lower your expectations a bit. I will say the characters sure wear some brightly colored clothes consider their location.

This was one of my daughter's favorite movies when she was little. She has it on VHS, but her VHS player broke so she couldn't watch it anymore. She is 28 now and still loves it so I bought it for her for a birthday gift. I also got a second one for my niece's 10th birthday. She has never seen it and as soon as she watched it she loved it. She said it is definitely in her list of top 3 movies. Wonderful to see a classic movie loved by many generations.

The alphabetically named human-relations challenged Pontipee boys are a delight to watch as they sing in this old yarn about trying to get yourself a wife, in a very politically incorrect, possibly-wouldn't-get-made-today kind of way. It's a special kind of movie, that probably isn't everyone's cup of tea, but is worth a try for it's classic nature.

Despite the description of DVD, this is a blu-ray released 06/05/2018. The restoration is beautiful and I am so glad they finally released it. This has been one of my favorite musicals since I was a little girl.
