    The Greatest Album Ever? (Rhetorically)

    Posted

If ever there were one album that one could listen to, it would most certainly be Sgt. Pepper's. Any and all styles of Beatles music are featured on this masterpiece. Quick and exciting (Sgt Peppers, Good Morning, Good Morning, Sgt Pepper's Reprise, Getting Better, Lovely Rita), beautiful and mystifying (She's Leaving Home, When I'm 64, A Day in the Life), experiments in song (Within You Without You, Mr. Kite, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds), soul-esque (Fixing a Hole, With a Little Help From my Friends). Paul McCartney's virtuosity and versatility in all music is expressed immensely, John Lennon's work is exceptional as well (especially some of his vocals), George Harrison showed his turn to Indian music with Within You WIthout You while still managing to keep his general mastery of the guitar, and Ringo Starr creates his best song with the group (With a Little Help From my Friends). Excellent performance all around. I also suggest The Beatles 1, Rubber Soul, and The Beatles (White Album).

Mono is the true way to listen to Peppers

The mono version of Peppers is the way the Beatles themselves prefered to record and release their music. They spent an inordinate amount of time in the studio perfecting the track sequences, edits, tape loops etc. and would not give their approval for release until all four agreed with the mono versions. They left the stereo mixes up to George Martin and his engineers to complete-they had no real interest in doing the stereo versions of their music .The mono version is completely different with the horns, and strings, sections in diffferent spots throuhgout the play of the album. It is the same but different. The only negatives are the cd's come with no extra, or alternate versions-but there is always tomorrow!

Worth buying CD for Beatles Fan!

I have owned the CD for more than a week and enjoying them. I have played in my Sony Walkman A-816 and my Ken wood audio system. Plus The bass is awesome! It sounds like Paul have rerecorded the bass with the latest recording systems. Some times too laud. Down side Since some of the instruments became so clear the vocals sound out dated and weak. But I am glad the they did not compress the vocal in the mixing process to keep it live and real. This CD made me want to upgrade the Audio system to hear even beyond what I can hear form my system.

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band is one of the best Beatle albums. This album marked the advent of multi-track recording which allowed for unlimited musical experimentation. Many of the songs could not be reproduced live exactly like they sounded on the record. Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds is one of my favorite Beatles tunes and is still a great song to this day.

I was so excited to buy a new copy of Sgt. Peppers. I don't buy many cds any more but had to replace this one. I was crushed when at the beginning of every single track there is a weird pause on the disc. It pauses and re-starts each song. Not enough to be a deal breaker, but still kind of a bummer, especially with such an important album.

Replacing my Beatles albums with remastered CDs is like rediscovering the Beatles all over again. I fully appreciate the "warmth" of the vinyl recordings, but the remastered CDs allow for so much more of the recordings to be heard. The subtle sounds of this recording in particular make this a "new" listening experience.

This is it. The point at which the Beatles stopped being a fantastic pop singles band and started being the fathers of modern album artistry. It's all been said before, but it bears repeating: this album is essential for anyone who considers themselves a fan of music.
