Couldn’t be more simple for cord-cutters!

Wow, I didn’t expect this to be so easy! I’ve been wanting to cut the cord (sorry Directv) for quite some time. I purchased an over-the-air (OTA) antenna, with amplifier, and intended to “wire it into” the cabling system in my home (using the same input into the splitter where the Directv satellite came in) to feed signal to 5 different outlets / TVs in our home. Then I discovered the HDHomeRun! What, no wires? I purchased the HDHomeRun and in two simple connections (power and Ethernet cable into a WiFi extender in my garage), I am broadcasting over-the-air TV in HD throughout my home. I chose to buy the “Channels” app in the Apple App Store which works EXTREMELY well, rather than the free HDHomeRun app (just ok, but works). Now I can broadcast the over-the-air TV signals wirelessly to my families iPhones, iPads, and Apple TVs... WITHOUT WIRES! LOVE IT! If you’re considering cutting the cord, and looking for easy options, then consider the HDHomeRun Connect with multiple tuners as the ideal solution. You’ll need a good OTA antenna to capture HD TV signals from broadcasting stations, a good WiFi network in your home (add extenders with Ethernet port if needed, in case you can’t get the antenna wired to the HDHomeRun Connect, which must hard-wired to your wireless network router - remember, a wireless extender works fine, too), and download the apps to your Apple devices, and you’ll be basking in cord-cutter, saving all kinds of money glory! NOTE: The “Channels” app works great for Apple products, and I understand they’re moving toward Android, too. I haven’t tested it with any Android devices (Nvidia Shield TV, etc.), but expect they will get it right when it’s available. Search for “Channels” in your device’s App Store. Lastly, I have recently subscribed to Directv NOW to get ESPN and other “favorite” non-OTA channels and Premium Channels... and I’m still saving over $100 per month compared to Directv satellite service... and still, I’m all wireless, and able to watch TV on my iPhone, iPad, or Apple TVs. This enables me to watch TV on my deck now, with a TV and Apple TV on a small cart I can easily move onto the deck, or garage, or driveway... wherever, as long as I’m able to access my home WiFi network!

Looking to cut the cord and get rid of cable, I decided to purchase the HDHomeRun Connect Quattro and connect it to an antenna, which I've mounted in my attic. When I got the HDHomeRun home, I kind of chuckled when I read the installation instructions: plug in the cables and go to a website. What shocked me was that that's really it. The website immediately detected my HDHomeRun device and instructed me to download the appropriate installer for the computer I was using (which happened to be a Mac). The software not only installed the client app, but also updated the devices' firmware, and I was up and running in under five minutes. I didn't have to create an account or enter any codes anywhere...it just worked. That's probably the easiest hardware installation I've ever done (and as an IT guy, I've done many)! From there, I was able to start watching all of my local TV on my Mac. Another couple quick installs got me access to it on my TVs via my Amazon Fire Sticks, my phone, and my iPad. Every app found the HDHomeRun with no configuration needed. Now I can watch local TV on any of my devices, not just my TVs, and the quality is as good (if not better) as with cable. I was also surprised to see how many unique channels are available over the air that aren't on cable. The next step was to connect the HDHomeRun to my Plex server so that I can record shows and access my local TV over the Internet when I travel. Again, a couple clicks and the Plex server found the HDHomeRun, imported it's channel list, and started downloading a program guide. I remember how excited I was when we finally got cable on our street when I was a little kid--I could finally watch Nickelodeon at home. Now I'm just as excited that I'll be returning my cable boxes to the cable company in the next few days. I don't watch Nickelodeon anymore, nor do I really watch any of the other 10 million channels I get...I think I will be quite happy with my HDHomeRun (along with my various streaming services) for many years to come.

First, let me say this device is AMAZING! Works great with my Nvidia Shield TV 2017. One major issue I had that almost caused me to return the HDHomeRun - Connect Quatro Tuner was after setting up I would receive an error message of "Unable to play channel" "No video data" even though the channels I was receiving this error for (CBS and NBC) I get great signal so I figured it wasnt a signal issue. After rebooting my network several times, moving splitters, bypassing splitters I jumped on google and saw others were having this same issue. Someone suggested downloading the latest BETA Firmware https://forum.silicondust.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=126&t=20613&sid=d98c9b1e37090c82ff25c13f70db826b. ***Note- Just updating to the latest Firmware does not fix this issue. You need the BETA firmware. I had the latest firmware and was still experiencing these errors. After I did this, I rebooted everything including the HDHOMERUN, network switch, router and NVIDIA Shield TV. FINALLY! No more issues!!! I have been enjoying this setup for almost a week and not one "Unable to play channel" "No video data" issue. They really need to fix this as I am sure others have returned this device (just as I almost did). I gave this 4 stars only because of the frustrating setup and configuration hassle. Besides that...5 STARS!

I purchased this 4-tuner version ($99) to replace the 2-tuner connect that I have used for the past year. My set-up is a windows 8.1 PC as my Plex-pass media server, Nexus players as clients, all wired. The four tuner sounded great because I have run out of tuners while recording occasionally. I simply removed the 2-tuner version and replaced it with the Quarto with the same Ethernet/ coax connections. The 2-tuner connect pulled in all my channels without any problem. The new Quarto would give my "weak signal" errors on several channels.Even the android "channels app" wouldn't tune some of the channels. I ran the HdHomerun software several times to try to correct this without success. Since I already had a working infrastructure with a 2-tuner connect working great (never touched it after initial set-up), this new version must not be ready to launch. I did not want to return this thing, but just couldn't get it to work correctly. I have used the Cable card (Prime version) for 3 yrs prior to the 2-tuner Connect. Both of them were absolutely bulletproof, just set-up and forget it. I chose to return the Quarto and go back to my two tuner Connect instead of waiting for Silicondust to work out all the issues with firmware update. I will get another 2-tuner Connect to establish my 4-tuners that I need.

The newer four tuner Quatro came out and my two tuner Connect was still returnable so I sent the Connect back and replaced it with a Quatro. Boy am I sorry! The Connect had absolutely no tuning issues in my configuration for the 3+ weeks I had it. I was pleased the Quatro initially detected more channels but I can hardly get it to tune in anything! I get repeatedly "Unable to play channel" "No video data". Quatro struggles with the stronger stations, however, my stations are 50 to 60 miles from me and I only have a 50 mile antenna driving a 6-way passive whole house distribution system! Quatro seems to work better, if you manage to get all 4 tuners on channel and let it thermally heat up. Again, Connect had no tuning issues, nor do my 3 TV tuners presently have, with this setup. Quatro is also lacking the very useful tuner indicator LEDs featured on Connect. I have verified Quatro has the latest firmware and all my devices have the latest client software. I cannot recommend Quatro in its present state and will likely be returning it unless SiliconDust fixes something in the very near future.

I've been an HDHomeRun Prime user for about 6 years now and that product has always been great. A year ago I decided to set up an HDHomeRun Extend with an attic antenna and I just wasn't happy with the signal loss or degradation (broadcast towers are about 50 miles away) plus it required any Xbox 360 I was using as a WMC extender to be actively logged into Xbox Live in order to process the live TV signal from the tuner which was a pain in the butt with 4 different extenders in the house. I ended up returning that product. This new HDHomeRun Quatro model has fixed all of those issues and also added another tuner to the mix. My signals with the same attic antenna are flawless and I have zero signal loss or degradation. It's even picking up another set of channels outside of my viewing area that the Extend didn't receive. The only feature I wish it had are status LED's like my Prime has. Other than that I'm very happy with this product so far. I've disconnected the Prime for now and we are doing just fine on OTA television thanks to the HDHomeRun Quatro.

Just like with the old analog antennas you must position the antenna correctly for the best experience. I recommend either an outdoor anteanae or a powered indoor positioned in a window towards your prominent signals. The optional purchase of the DVR Service is great. Plex software also works great but isn’t as realiable with the recording yet. I use Plex to watch outside the home network and HDHomeRun software to watch inside. Would VPN from the outside of Oncould for a better experience. Great on fire stick, Xbox one, iOS, PlayStation 4, and Roku. TvOS support is wonky with 3rd party only app support. Hoping they will get the first party app up and working soon so the Apple TV will be all I need.
