David O. Russell's Silver Linings Playbook stars Bradley Cooper as Pat, a bipolar man from Philadelphia who has spent the last eight months in a mental hospital. He was ordered there after a violent incident involving his wife and another man. Pat moves in with his father (Robert De Niro), a lifelong Eagles fans who has low-level OCD issues. Pat wants to get back together with his wife, even though there is a restraining order keeping him from contacting her. He soon befriends Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a depressed young woman who's mourning the death of her husband by engaging in compulsive sex with almost everyone she meets; she also knows his wife and offers to deliver a letter of his to her if he acts as her partner in a local dance competition. Silver Linings Playbook: the movie that became a movement
Sexy funny and entertaining this is one of my favorite movies so I had to upgrade to the Blu-ray copy but it also comes with a DVD which is nice Jennifer Lawrence is my celebrity crush this is one of the best performances of her young career she is sexy naughty flirty fun blunt and broken in this role and gets the most out of the complex character Bradley Cooper is equally impressive in his performance Silver linings playbook has a star-studded cast alongside them as well including the great Robert De Niro The fast talking hilarious Chris tucker and classily all American girl Julia Stiles all of these actors and actresses brilliantly lend layers and depth to the film not a single character feels wasted even if their role is small this is one of those movies you can watch over and over and it is a must have for any movie collection I only wish they would release it in the 4K format If you want to see a well written highly entertaining movie that is sure to stand out from others then do yourself a favor and watch The Award-winning film silver linings playbook
I loved this movie. The story and the characters are "different" and the acting is great. I think It is important for all of us to get more familiar and comfortable around people who are "different" from us. The 2 main characters in this movie, I believe, have bi-polar disorders; and "bi-polar" is a type of "mental illness." Maybe "mental illness" just means "different," at least sometimes. I loved these two characters and I loved the way they were. They didn't seem "ill" to me, they just seemed "different" and interesting--more "colorful" than most people. Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper were both great in portraying these "quirky" and--to me, lovable--individuals. I am so happy that I have this Blu Ray in my collection. That way I can enjoy it repeatedly. I found it at a great price on the Best Buy website.
Silver Linings Playbook is an exceptionally crafted film, and one of the better releases in 2012. All the characters are represented with their various quirks and flaws, giving them the depth needed to make this tale about two genuinely damaged people so engaging.
If you haven't seen it yet, I would highly recommend it. In the romantic comedy vein, it will appeal to anyone who likes their movies generally uplifting.
On the technical side of things, the Blu-ray reproduction is brilliant. No grain is to be found in this film, with spectacular detail on close-ups and even background objects. There is a bit of a dark crush in some of the darker scenes, but it isn't overpowering.
On the audio side, this is a dialogue heavy film as many films in the genre tend to be. With that said, there isn't much surround action going on here. The surround effects only really kick in with the music, but the dialogue is clear and crisp and the mix is solid for this type of movie.
In summary, if you like romantic comedies, or just stories about people overcoming their own failings to find happiness with one another, I think you'll enjoy this film.
Silver Linings Playbook - One of 2012's Best Films
Written and directed by David O. Russell (The Fighter), Silver Linings Playbook is based on the 2008 novel by Matthew Quick and stars (Bradley Cooper) as Pat Solitano, a troubled man who has lost everything – his house, his job, and his wife.
After spending eight months in a Baltimore mental institution, Pat finds himself back in Philadelphia, living with his mother (Jacki Weaver) and father (Robert De Niro). Despite a restraining order, Pat is determined to remain positive, rebuild his life, and reunite with his estranged wife Nikki (Brea Bee).
Meanwhile, Pat’s parents hope he’ll get back on his feet and take part in the family’s obsession with the Philadelphia Eagles. Things take an unexpected turn when he meets kindred crazy person Tiffany (Jennifer Lawrence), a young woman trying to cope with her husband’s death by sleeping with everyone at her work.
Pat and Tiffany bond over their issues and idiosyncrasies, with ‘crazy person’ topics like the types of medication they’ve taken. Tiffany offers to help Pat reconnect with his wife, but only if he’ll return the favor by doing something very important for her – be her partner in a freestyle dance competition.
Silver Linings Playbook is a delightful, uplifting film that soars on incredible performances. Jacki Weaver (Animal Kingdom) delivers a realistic portrayal of a worried, protective mother while DeNiro’s Pat Sr. is a bookmaker and sports fanatic, obsessively arranging his television remotes and rubbing his lucky handkerchief during Eagles games.
This is the best DeNiro has been since the mid-nineties. Sure, he was a funny caricature in films like Meet the Parents and Machete, but here he plays a living, breathing person who buries his emotions and attempts to bond with his troubled son over watching the game.
A father unable to express his emotions, Pat Sr. is forced to confront his son and in turn, open up and address some of his own emotional hangups. DeNiro deserves Best Supporting Actor for this role and I sincerely hope the Academy recognizes him for his work here.
Cooper and Lawrence display versatility and surprising range in their performances as imperfect people searching for a silver lining. Usually with romantic comedies, the reasons for love are inherent: Katherine Heigl is super attractive, Gerard Butler is super attractive – they should hook up (so I can watch).
But here, there is a real, palpable chemistry between Cooper and Lawrence – they need each other, and we love watching them repair each other’s broken heart and mind… and of course they’re drop-dead gorgeous and sexy as all get-out, so that doesn’t hurt either.
Silver Linings Playbook is one of the best films of the year – and a great followup to David O. Russell’s 2010 film, The Fighter. I think it gets nominated across the board, from acting to Adapted Screenplay, Director, and Best Picture.
A humorous, relatable journey into all matters of the heart, Silver Linings Playbook is a reminder that we’ve all got baggage and problems and stuff to worry about – but we can get past it and find things that make life worth living.
If you like seeing on film characters that seem real life, enjoy romantic themes and a fresh somewhat comical look at two unlikely mates - this is the film for you.
While the character Jennifer Lawrence plays is not going to be everyone's cup of tea, she does an outstandingly true portral of this undesirable. The hidden jewel in the movie and unsung hero is actually Bradley Cooper who battles his way back to mental health.
I watched this movie when tired and found myslef dozing off in a couple of long passages - but rewatched it when freshly rested and enjoyed every bit of it. I don't recommend this film for folks that are into horror, mind numbing non-stop action or tons of gore - you won't find that here.
I bought this movie for my wife thinking she would like it. I work out of state and was taking the train back home when I decided to watch it. I was thinking "this is some kind of chick flick". This is likely one of the best movies I have even seen. It's full of comedic remarks, serious discussions, and imitates real life. It is even more hilarious if you know someone that struggles with bi-polar disorders, since you have a better understanding of the characters struggles. As an added plus, Jennifer Lawrence, since she is such a great actress
