    Synopsis

    Slap Shot
Paul Newman plays Reggie Dunlop, the coach of a pathetic minor-league American hockey team. His career at a standstill and his marriage in tatters, Dunlop has nothing to lose by taking on a new group of players who are one evolutionary step above Neanderthals. Only when the team begins winning does he decide to get behind these players, and to encourage the rest of the team to play as down-and-dirty as the newcomers. Straight-arrow team member Ned Braden (Michael Ontkean) resents this influx of gonzo talent, preferring to play clean. As the film's multitude of subplots play themselves out, Dunlop does his best to keep the outraged Braden on the team. Slap Shot is the sort of film for which the "R" rating was invented: Its nonstop barrage of profanity and its raunchy action sequences are of such intensity that the film will probably never be shown intact on commercial television. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

      Great Hockey Movie

Truly a poignant film throughout, a quality which, for some reason, is generally not discussed-- as this movie revolves around an aging hockey player-coach with a dead marriage, the failing marriage of his young best player, that player's overall philosophic unhappiness with life (same for his alcoholic wife), the "we're going nowhere" feelings of basically all the players on the team (if not the league), false hopes of a new beginning for the team in another town under financially viable new owners, and more. This movie is about way more than just the funny (and violent) deeds of the Hanson brothers.

Slapshot is a classic as far as sports related movies go, Paul Newman does a great job as the player/coach of the team. When he hears of an impending sale of the local mill and that the team is going to be shutdown, he decides he is going to try and see if he can get the team sold somehow. To show that the team isn't going to just roll over and die, he is able to get them to play together and play tough.. sometimes to tough, mostly in part thanks to the Hanson Brothers.

If you have never seen Slapshot, you really should. It perfectly captures having a dream but not making it to the top of the profession, and just continuing to chuck away in the minor leagues. Many funny scenes, and a lot of fun. It also really captures the 1970s well - a much freer time than today. This blu-ray is the nicest I've seen the movie and well worth buying.

A truly funny look at a failing, minor league, hockey club and their management's efforts to build their fan base so they could survive in one of the toughest venues in the world of sport. Really funny sport movie with a bunch of lovable characters headed by Paul Newman in a novel role, which he handles with humorous perfection, as the coach of a bunch of singleminded, rowdy bunch of guys.

I had to honor the man who made "hockey puck" a comedy term. This movie ALSO made hockey puck comedy but more for the sport. Face it, you're watching this for the hockey morons and the Hanson Bros (who may or may not be morons according to your definition BUT they're loveable!). Very, very good value for the buck. An absolute steal at $5.99... Get this -- or you really ARE a hockey puck!

After viewing this flick I remembered that the flick wasn't great when it was originally released, and therefore it's not going to get better with age. I picked this up becasue I vaguely remeber the Hansen brothers bringing some life to this movie... unfortunately not enough!!! Ok to have if you're building the movie library with some bargin movies but it does look dated from the story telling aspect.

The actors are great, story is great. This just reminds me of so many classic movies from the 70's and 80's that only show their age in the clothes and world. The story, dialogue, and actors make this a timeless classic to be. You don't have to love hockey to appreciate the movie but it definitely adds to the overall film.

They don't get much funnier than Slap Shot. The Blu-ray is probably the best it will look and sound, pretty decent clarity for an older movie, solid color and grain is intact, not washed away by digital manipulation, thank you Universal. Lossless mono sound is serviceable and as I say, it won't get better than this.
