    Synopsis

    Sleepy Hollow
Washington Irving's tale of Ichabod Crane and the Headless Horseman gets a few new twists in a screen adaptation directed by Tim Burton. In this version, Ichabod (Johnny Depp) is a New York City detective whose unorthodox techniques and penchant for gadgets make him unpopular with is colleagues. He is sent to the remote town of Sleepy Hollow to investigate a series of bizarre murders, in which a number of people have been found dead in the woods, with their heads cut off. Local legend has it that a Hessian ghost rides through the woods on horseback, lopping off the heads of the unsuspecting and unbelieving. Ichabod refuses to believe in this legend, convinced that there must be a logical explanation for the murders. In time, Ichabod becomes smitten with a local lass, Katrina Van Tassel (Christina Ricci), who is the sweetheart of the burly Brom Bones (Casper Van Dien), and he becomes determined to capture the murderer to prove his bravery and win her heart. Christopher Walken, Jeffrey Jones, and Christopher Lee highlight the supporting cast; Lee's appearance is particularly apt, since Burton has cited the Hammer films of the 1960s as a major influence in making this film. Andrew Kevin Walker and Tom Stoppard contributed to the screenplay. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

      scary ghost story

My favorite film version of Washington Irving's story, even if it is radically different from it. At the end of the 18th century, New York constable Ichabod Crane (Johnny Depp) is recruited to investigate murders in the town of Sleepy Hollow. The inhabitants believe the phantom known as the Headless Horseman is responsible but Crane, being a man of science, believes the murderer is human. Depp is perfect in the lead and the relationship between Crane & Katrina Van Tassel (Christina Ricci) is surprisingly sweet. Thankfully, the Headless Horseman is also perfect and scarier than in the Disney cartoon.

This is a great legend turned movie, as only Tim Burton can do. I love the Johnny Depp and Tim Burton combo, and even better there's no singing. Ignore the guy that said he didn't like it. If you read his reviews, he doesn't like anything. To everyone that's not as negative, you'll love this movie. Fun for the whole family, my little girls loved it. I highly recommend it! Also, some other great Depp/Burton films for families are Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and his newest Alice in Wonderland.

This is an excellent film, my wife and I love it! This film has that great imagery we've all come to know from Tim Burton. This film is reminiscent of Edward Scissorhands. I love the Depp/ Burton combo, (except thier more recent singing movies.) But, this film brings an old legend to life in a fantastic and brilliant movie. I highly recommend it! Where as my wife and I do not like singing in movies, if you do, you should watch Sweeney Todd.

A spin on the classic "Headless Horseman" tale. Interesting set up and thrilling because we live so close to Sleepy Hollow, NY. If you like thrillers with a twist, check it out, but be prepared for some different accents and lingo. Okay, but will wait until Halloween to watch it again. Thanks Best Buy for the great customer service when making this purchase.

This is such a classic story. I remember reading it when I was in the 5th grade. I fell in love with this movie. Johnny Depp is brilliant in in this movie. I had nightmares of that headless horseman for days. It is that scary; makes you want to sleep with the lights on. You'll be so scared; you might as well be scared headless but the question is do you dare?

The film itself is terrific fun. The BD transfer leaves a lot to be desired. It's a step up from the DVD, but nothing great in terms of real sharp picture quality. The very bland color pallete doesn't really allow for true "popping" in terms of detail and contrast. Lots of grainy spots. The film deserves a better transfer.

      So Much Potential

'Sleepy Hollow' is yet another Tim Burton directed picture that has so much potential, but instead fails miserably due to a ludicrous and twisted storyline that's extremely odd. Beautifully shot, the look of the film is its highlight, and it's a shame the story wasn't better, because this could have been a top-notch production. Widescreen.

      Great Adaptation by Tim Burton

This was a wonderfully interesting, down-right spooky adaptation of the Legend of Sleepy Hollow done by the modern master of the macabre, Tim Burton. Fascinating changes to the story make it a sort of fantasy, murder mystery which keeps you going until the very end. The disk is great. For $10 it's well worth it.
