    Synopsis

    Snitch
A desperate father infiltrates a powerful drug cartel in order to save his son from a 10-year prison sentence in this crime drama based on actual events. Arrested on charges of drug distribution after he's caught with a package of Ecstasy, 18-year-old Jason Collins (Rafi Gavron) faces a mandatory ten-year sentence in a federal prison. But Jason's father John (Dwayne Johnson) knows that his son is no drug dealer, and vows to do whatever it takes to win back his freedom. When Jason refuses an offer to reduce his sentence by setting someone up to take a big fall, John pleads with U.S. Attorney Joanne Keeghan (Susan Sarandon) to let him go undercover, and gather enough evidence to convict the real power players. With the help of ex-con-turned-family man Daniel (Jon Bernthal), John is hot on the trail of Malik (Michael Kenneth Williams), a vicious drug dealer and the leader of a notorious street gang. Meanwhile, in his efforts to free his son, John may have inadvertently put Daniel's family in jeopardy. Later, when the growing trail of clues leads John to ruthless cartel leader Juan Carlos "El Topo" Pintera (Benjamin Bratt), the loyal father vows not to let his fate be dictated by the ambitious powers that be on either side of the law. Barry Pepper also stars. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

As an attorney who practices federal criminal defense law, I saw this movie as generally a very realistic portrayal of what is known as third-party cooperation or assistance in which a friend or family member of the defendant provides assistance to the government in exchange for a lesser sentence for the defendant. Obviously, this kind of cooperation is fraught with danger. But this movie also seems to suggest that imprisoning first time offenders for drug trafficking is unfair and that the war against drugs has not contributed to a decline in drug consumption or a decline in the number of drug dealers. Many thoughtful people, including many defense lawyers, would agree with these suggestions. Rock does a great job in his role as a caring and dedicated father who puts his life on the line to help his son get an earlier release from prison. He is clearly receiving more complex character roles and portraying them with great skill. The only unrealistic component of the movie was the federal prosecutor who appeared to be campaigning during her tenure as U.S. Attorney. This would not be allowed. Otherwise Snitch is an engaging and thought-provoking movie.

I wanted to check out this movie based on Roger Ebert's review. A review far more eloquent than what I can write. That said, this movie did not disappoint in that it gave me an interesting story, supposedly based on real events (and one which was not a rehash of something I had previously seen), action, entertainment, and some food for thought about the current state of drug laws. The director's commentary said he was not taking any particular position. I think he is kidding himself. But that's okay. It is his film. Seeing this on disk and not in the theater, I wonder if the little pre-movie infomercial (for lack of a better word) about high American incarceration rates was shown there. The numbers might be disturbing. But not addressed is the matter of whether our police are simply more effective at catching criminals than in other countries or whether there is just more crime here or whether you believe the numbers reported by other countries. For fans of action movies, especially action movies that make you think, I would recommend this film.

We all know the Rock aka Dwayne Johnson is best known for his action films when he does them. The Rundown, Walking Tall, Fast Five & 6, his comedies Be Cool, Tooth Fairy which would fall under more family fair then comedy and now he tries drama. "Snitch" is inspired by true events of a father hell bent on keeping his son from the slam after being set up with the distribution of drugs. What happens as a result is his sudden jump from smart businessman to drug runner all in the name of the law. The Federal Government to be exact who seems pretty at ease to allow this average citizen to burrow his way into the underworld in order to capture a local drug king just to find out of the bigger cartel king ping is just around the corner. The movie itself holds its own with good performances and situations. The blu side of things Lionsgate offers up an average PQ & AQ presentation with a few extra's good for a once over. Bottom line a decent offering from the Rock as a rental or under $10 purchase.

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson plays construction worker, John Matthews. He finds himself in a bind, when his son, Jason Collins is arrested for reception of drugs with intent to sell. To reduce the sentence, Matthews agrees to work with the DEA to take down a notorious drug dealer, who actually deals drugs for a notorious cartel. Matthews aides the help of a fellow co-worker to do this. Meanwhile, watchers of Snitch will get a glimpse of the dark underworld of what it is like to be a mule for a drug cartel. That's as far, as I will go with no spoilers. The 4K resolution of the movie is superb.

A classic good guy vs the criminal underworld story, but this one has The Rock. It tries to manage some heavy themes, and pulls them off about as good as any summer crime drama would. The settings and the characters aren't going to make you have some giant revelation like the director wants you too, but they are good enough. Its a solid C movie, with some good moments, and a charismatic star.

I really enjoyed this movie! Dewayne Johnson's acting has gotten so much better and the graphics in this are amazing! I have the Sony xbr-900e and the newest Sony 4k movie player and I really believe there isn't many Tvs or players that have a better picture than what I have! This is a really great movie to watch with my set up!

It starts out slow and builds to a big ending. I'm not confident that this fictional tell is more than pure speculation. It did not seem real enough. But if such seedy characters did exist in positions of US security administration then this movie definitely is an informer of such poor behavior. But his son is not innocent, nor worth all that trouble! Or is he? You decide.
