  • General
    • Product Name: Alpha a5100 Mirrorless Camera with 16-50mm Retractable Lens
    • Brand: Sony
    • Model Number: ILCE5100L/B
    • Color: Black
    • Product Set: w/ 16-50mm Lens
    • Camera Model Family: Sony a5100
    • Digital Camera Type: Mirrorless Camera with Lens
  • Imaging
    • Image Sensor Type: CMOS (CCD and CMOS are the two main technologies used in image sensors. CCD, the older of the two types, turns analog light signals into digital pixels. This conversion happens without distortion, resulting in high-quality images. Newer CMOS sensors use transistors at each pixel to move electrical charges. CMOS sensors are typically less expensive, but also require more light to create distortion-free images.)
    • Image Sensor Size: APS-C (23.6 x 15.7 mm)
    • Image Resolution (Display): 6000 x 4000 (Refers to the number of pixels, both horizontally and vertically, used to either capture an image or display it. The higher the resolution the finer the image details.)
    • Zoom Capability: true (This function allows for magnification of the subject.)
    • Digital Zoom: 8x (A digital zoom is accomplished electronically, with no adjustment of the camera's optics, and no optical resolution gained in the process. The existing data is not enhanced or added to, merely displayed at a lower resolution, thereby giving an illusion of an enlarged image.)
    • Low Light/High Sensitivity: true (High sensitivity digital imaging devices are designed to work in low light conditions to produce a high dynamic range image.)
    • Image File Format(s): JPEG (Standardized software format(s) of storing digital images. The type of format chosen for capturing and compressing the image can determine quality, level of detail, and storage space required.)
  • Focus
    • Autofocus: true (Allows the camera to automatically focus through the lens, rather than by adjusting the lens manually.)
    • Eye Autofocus (Eye AF): true (Automatically seeks out and focuses on the subject's eye and holds it as the camera and subject move and as the photographer shoots at high frame rates.)
  • Exposure Control
    • Shutter Speeds: 1/4000 - 30 sec.; bulb (The length of time the shutter remains open when the shutter release is activated, expressed in fractions of seconds. The longer the shutter is open, the more light that is able to be captured by the camera sensor.)
    • Minimum Aperture: f/3.5 (The smallest opening of a lens, typically expressed in f-numbers. The larger the number, the smaller the aperture and the less light that can enter the lens. A smaller aperture creates a larger depth of field, which keeps both foreground and background in focus.)
    • Maximum Aperture: f/36 (The limit to how wide a lens can be open, typically expressed in f-numbers. The smaller the number, the larger the aperture and the more light that can enter the lens. A larger aperture creates a shallower depth of field, helpful for keeping subjects in focus and blurring background details.)
    • Minimum ISO: 100 (ISO is the measurement of a camera image sensor's light sensitivity. When there is plenty of light, using the lowest ISO setting available will typically result in a higher quality image.)
    • Maximum ISO: 25600 (ISO is the measurement of a camera image sensor's light sensitivity. In low-light environments, using a higher ISO setting helps to capture a sharp, bright image.)
    • Brightness Control: true (Allows the camera to adjust the brightness of a captured image for optimal exposure.)
    • Burst Mode: true (Also referred to as continuous shooting. This feature captures multiple shots in rapid succession.)
    • Burst Rate: 6 frames per second
    • Self Timer: true
    • Self-Timer Delay: 10 seconds
    • Shooting Modes: None (Exposure modes employed by the photographer to control the optimal aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and other settings for capturing specific subjects/scenes. Examples include Aperture-Priority, Macro, and Manual modes.)
    • Panorama Mode: true
    • Scene Modes: Anti-Motion Blur, Hand-held Twilight, Landscape, Macro, Night portrait, Night Scene, Portrait, Sports action, Sunset (Exposure modes with predetermined optimal settings for capturing specific scenes. Examples include Landcape, Portrait, and Sports modes.)
    • White Balance Modes: Auto, daylight, shade, cloudy, incandescent, fluorescent and more (Settings that calibrates how the color white is rendered in an image/video, reducing the appearance of unnatural contrasts caused by various light sources.)
    • Effective Pixels: 24.3 megapixels (The actual number of pixels which make up the viewable image.)
  • Lens
    • Lens Mount Compatibility: Sony E-Mount
    • Lens Type: Standard Zoom
    • Minimum Focal Length: 16 millimeters (The minimum distance between the lens and the image sensor that allows the subject to be in focus. The shorter the focal length, the greater the area of scene captured.)
    • Maximum Focal Length: 50 millimeters (The maximum distance between the lens and the image sensor that allows the subject to be in focus. The greater the focal length, the smaller the area of scene captured.)
    • In-Lens Image Stabilization: true (This feature helps reduce image blurring from camera motion. Lens stabilization means an element within the lens moves automatically to counteract detected motion.)
    • Lens Series: Sony PZ (The product group that the lens belongs to, based on similar shared features.)
    • Lens Model Number: SELP1650

Q: Would you recommend this for someone who wants to upload high quality YouTube videos?

A: Hi Maya! Yes. Beyond stunning stills, the α5100 is also a movie-making machine. you can achieve accurate live AF tracking, beautiful background blur and high-quality sound. -Anthony

Q: I want to start doing daily vlogs on YouTube...I'm stuck between the Sony a5100 and the Canon G7X Mark ii. Which one do you think is better and why?

A: I had the same issue when I was deciding. I ended up going for the A5100. After watching many reviews on both cameras, sometimes side by side comparisons, I decided this camera was the one I wanted (A5100). I liked the sound quality on this one better. Also when seeing the side by side comparisons, the colors and video quality was more lifelike (to me) on the Sony. It is a fragile camera. Just don't go throwing it around and you'll be fine. I also really liked how this camera has a "smart" feature for both photo and video. Meaning the camera will adjust the lighting for you (helpful if you're a beginner). I would reccommend watching some comparison videos on YouTube if you haven't already.

Q: How do i send pictures to my phone? using wifi.

A: If you are using an iPhone, download the App "Play Memories Mobile." Then open up the wifi on your phone to accept your camera. Then open up the wifi while the photos are being transferred. You'll have the photos saved on the camera roll and available to you on the app as well.

Q: Does this camera have a place to put a MIC?

A: Hi Red, no. This camera does not support the use of external microphones. You may refer to this link for more information: https://docs.sony.com/release//ILCE5100.pdf Thanks, -Mark

Q: I am double minded between getting the Sony Alpha a5100 or 6000? I am only going to take makeup selfies for instagram and OOTDs, therefore, I want the selfie screen 5100 comes with. However, for image quality I read 6000 is better? Please help!

A: I would say go with the a5100 it's really good if you're just wanting it for selfies. Right out of the box with its setting is not good, so you will have to change some settings for a better picture in low light. Hope that helps.

Q: When using the built in wifi am i able to send videos to my iphone?

A: Yes-ish. You have to set your File Format in the camera to shoot in MP4 in order to then send it to your phone. If you shoot the video in AVCHD or XAVC S to get a different frame rate, it will not send it to your phone because phones can only read the MP4 files. You don't have to change any settings to send a photo to your phone, though.

Q: Does A5100 kit lens have image stabilization?

A: Yes, there is image stabilization. There's no in-body image stabilization in the a5100. But the 16-50mm kit lens has a quite good in-lens image stabilization, called OSS -- Optical Steady Shot.

Q: Will the 16-50mm lens work well for recording or taking pictures during a college graduation?

A: The 16-50mm is good for short distance. For a large halls, you'll need the 55-210mm lens. They sell the A5100 with the 55-210mm lens as a package. This would be the best deal for you, and the package also save you more money when compared buying separately.
