The packaging is pretty straight forward, no frills, cardboard surrounds inside to hold the speaker in place inside the box. Hey it just had to get to the store and then home with no damage.
First impression: Overall the speaker has a good look and feel.
Powering it up. I was able to easily pair it to my iPhone and checking the battery I found it was at half charge.
Pulling up my favorite play list produced a nice clean sound with solid bass at the initial setting. One place I plan on using this is at work, so I tried turning the volume down to a level I'd use there and found it still retained some good bass and I could still make out the vocals. Next I tried making a Skype call and the person on the other end couldn't hear the music, but the level was still acceptable for me.
The controls are what you'd expect: Power, volume up and down, play(call)/pause, Battery and Bluetooth Pairing. There's also a Party button for playing across multiple compatible speakers.
I tried pressing the Party button with only this one speaker and that resulted in the loss of the connection with my phone. Not sure there's any use for this with a single speaker but will have to check the instructions.
I also downloaded the Sony Music Center app which gave me access to the Extra Bass settings, a small equalizer (bass/mid/treb), and the ability to change between mono and stereo. There are also some Power Options available (Bluetooth Standby, Stamina and Battery Voice Levels). My preference was with the mid boosted slightly to bring the vocals out a little more with the Extra Bass on.
There are three ports on the bottom end of the speaker which act as a bass port at the bottom end while the speaker is standing up. The bottom also has a rubberized coating, which should help keep it from "walking" across a surface while playing.
It says you can also lay it down, but this speaker is a round tube. If the surface you're placing it on isn't level, the only thing that will keep it from rolling is the lanyard/hanging loop at the top if you initially place it in this manner. If the surface gets bumped hard enough or shifts I can see this rolling right off the edge. This is the only knock I have on the speaker.
I didn't really notice much of a difference in the sound standing up or on the side and it will take up less space standing so that's how I expect to use it most of the time, unless its hanging in my tent.
Overall the sound for the size of the speaker is pretty good. If you're looking for a party/dance speaker it may not be quite big enough, but for a small group sitting around a fire pit or hanging out at the beach/pool the Sony XB23 will fit the bill nicely.
By day it will be on my desk at the office and I can see it travelling with me on camping trips and tailgating with friends.
I have had the Sony SRS-XB23 for a little over a week now. The speaker performs way above the level that you expect at this price point. One of the great features is the richness of tones that the XB23 puts out. Sony has ventured out of the old school diaphragm and has developed a non-circular shape, which increases the diaphragm area and gives the richer tones and deeper bass. Another great feature is the Party Connect, connect up to 100 speakers to the same input device and be able to control the party from your phone. Battery life is about what you would expect, I drain mine a little faster than the 12 hour battery life at normal or 10 hours for Extra Bass that it states, but I usually have it turned all the way up and all the bass I can get.
I really like the music app that comes with the device, I wish it had some preset equalizers to match what your listening to, not just the standard Treble/Mid/Bass that it comes with. I do really like that when you set-up the app you include all the different apps that you would use with the speaker, whether it be Amazon Music, Tidal or Pandora, and you quick launch to each of those apps as you use them.
I take my music with me everywhere, when I am remodeling a house, when we are at the pool, when we are working in the garden or when I am in the shop. I always have to think of what will get in my speaker and try to protect it, Now I don’t have to worry with the Sony XB23 anymore. If it gets sawdust in it, just hose it off, if it gets wet, just dry it off. Anything you can throw at it, it can take, with it being rated IP67 and being rust-proof, dust-proof waterproof and shockproof. This speaker is also the perfect size to carry with you, it even comes with a leash so you can hang it up where ever you go.
I currently have a smaller portable bluetooth speaker that I use outdoors when doing yard work or washing my truck. While this speaker sounds pretty good, I wanted something bigger that would offer better sound both in the high end, but especially in the bass area where my smaller really lacked in the bass department.
Enter the new Sony SRS-XB23 portable bluetooth speaker. This speaker is twice the size as my older speaker unit. The Sony measures 8 1/2 inches high by 2 7/8 wide. It's lightweight at 1.3 pounds, so it's very easy to carry with you if on a walk or hiking using the attached lanyard which you can attach to your belt, back pack, or hanging from say a tree branch in your yard. And for someone like me who loves lots of bass in their music, this Sony SRS-XB23 offers an extra bass mode.
The speaker comes in 5 different colors. Other features are dual full range speakers and dual passive radiators work in tandem to provide full rich bass sound. As mentioned above, there is also an attached lanyard, so you can hang if from about anywhere. While I have not run out of battery capacity, Sony claims the battery will last about 12 hours when fully charged. In the extra bass mode, Sony says the battery life drops to about 10 hours on a full charge.
Sony says that it will take about 4 hours to charge the speaker with the included 18 inch USB type C cable. The cable does not have an adapter, so if you plug it into your computer to charge, it may take 4 hours to fully charge. I used an adapter to plug the USB type C cable into the wall, and it took 90 minutes to fully charge.
I highly recommend that you download the Sony music center app to your phone (Android or Apple). By default, the Sony SRS-XB23 audio is in mono, even though you have two speakers. When you go into the Sony app, you can switch it to stereo mode, and when placing your speaker horizontally, your music will be in stereo. If you place your speaker standing vertically, it automatically goes back to mono.
Other controls in the Sony app let you turn on the extra bass feature. A 3 band (bass, mid, treble) type equalizer. Select stereo or mono and feature called ClearAudio+. But if you use the ClearAudio+ feature, it will put your equalizer back to the factory specifications of flat. For my taste, I have the equalizer on with the extra bass enabled.
The Sony SRS-XB23 comes with the lanyard attached, but easily removed if you wish and a short (18 inches) USB type C charging cable that you'll need to plug into a computer or using an adapter to plug it into the wall for faster charging.
Overall, I highly recommend the Sony SRS-XB23 speaker for it audio qualities, especially when you use the Sony music center app to tweak the sound.
The Sony SRS-XB23 Portable Bluetooth speaker is a small speaker that packs a powerful punch.
It is very lightweight but don’t let that fool you. We took this camping this past weekend and it basically played the entire time on a single charge. We used the lanyard to hook it to one of the awning arms and left it. And it looked good as new when we packed up to leave.
The initial connection to my iPhone 7 (and my sons) was a breeze. Simply open up the settings app, click on the SONY SRS and it was playing almost immediately. Take the time and download the Sony Music Center app if you purchase this speaker. It truly improves the experience of this speaker.
Sound quality is exceptional. The speaker has a great bass. The highs and lows are great as well. The music is crystal clear and the range to the phone/music source is remarkable. I was more than 75 ft away at one point and it never lost connection with my phone. I have several other Bluetooth speakers, but this Sony SRS-XB23 is by far the best of them.
The build of this speaker is top notch. As I said, we attached it to the awning arm and left it. It was in the sun, shade, rain, wind, and like that little pink bunny, it kept going and going and going. I was a little weary of the waterproof ability at one point, because we had a very heavy rain and I thought about the speaker about half way through, but it survived, and the sound was still exceptional. This is a well built speaker that is very tough. VERY TOUGH.
Sony also did a fine job of the layout of the speaker controls. The on/off button, volume up/down next song/previous song, etc. are all easy to locate and use.
It came with a charge that was about half charged. I charged it for about three hours and it was fully charged. The provided charging cable attaches easily.
For me, there are none. I truly enjoy the speaker and can’t wait to try it out in a couple of weeks at Myrtle Beach. Can’t wait!

Decent Sound / Waterproof Design
Portable, Price, Sound quality
Admittedly, my need for portable music is minimal, but I do have a Beats Pill that I've been known to use on occasion. I never came to expect much from a mobile music experience and never had any concerns about my Beats Pill. With more time on my hands with everything shut down my wife and I found ourselves spending more time outside and she likes to listen to music when she's gardening or working on the landscaping. Not wanting my Beats Pill full of mud and water I looked at getting her a waterproof portable speaker to link up to her Apple Watch.
Of course I had to play with it before turning it over and after a rocky start I have to say I was impressed.
Opening the box I found no power cable included. Fortunately, I have plenty of USB-C cables but the point is...where was the cable? The instructions clearly indicate that one was supposed to be included so at least I can sleep knowing it was an one-off oversight and not a silly cost cutting decision.
Pairing was a breeze and I like that turning it has a separate pairing button for pairing with future devices. I also like that the power button is a solid click that turns the speaker on/off. No holding and waiting a few seconds like other bluetooth devices I've used. The design is much more muted and simple than their previous designs that had a cheesy light system that made the speakers look kiddish. The XB23 is all black with sturdy rubber ends and a strong mesh middle. I think they accomplished quite a feat - strong and rugged yet light and portable.
I paired the speaker to my phone and just as I was starting to play my first test song I got a phone call. When I answered the music stopped as intended, but when ended the phone call the music didn't start again. I opened the Apple Music app and saw that the music was playing but no sound could be heard. I closed the app, re-opened and played again...still no sound. Only after I turned the speaker off and back on was I able to get the music playing again. Maybe it's a totally random isolated occurrence, or maybe the problem lies with Apple and not the speaker, but it was really frustrating.
After I started playing my test songs things got better for this little powerhouse. The volume was quite impressive and at its loudest volumes there was just the faintest hint of distortion, but certainly much better than what I had been used to on my Beats Pill. My 'bass' test song is Space Lord by Monster Magnet and it confirmed how difficult it is to get a truly deep and resonating sound out of a small speaker. The drivers at the end definitely showed a lot of movement and looked impressive, but in reality there wasn't a rich bass sound that I know the song arrangement to have. Don't let that sway your decision though, I'd likely be dissatisfied with any $100 portable speaker in that regard.
The party connect seems like a pretty neat feature where you can connect up to 100 speakers from the same Sony family, but to me that doesn't seem practical. If I'm outside doing something I might want to hook up an extra speaker...maybe 3 total. If you're talking inside the house there are much better, albeit non-portable, options that are going to sound much better than using a portable device for whole home audio. I just don't see where Party Connect is that big of deal.
In summary the XB23 is a decent value for a waterproof device that has a simple minimalistic design and with a strong sound that gets loud without a lot of distortion.
Hi Farns, Thanks for purchasing the XB23 for your wife’s outdoor gardening adventures. The Xb23 is great for any outdoor activity, as it is waterproof and dustproof. So, even if your wife buries her XB23 in potting soil, and leaves it outside for 3 days while it rains, her speaker will be just fine. Also, please try the Sony Music Center app. This may help with the connection issues you had. It also has useful tools such as an EQ, so you can customize the sound to your liking. You are right, you can add up to 99 more XB23s to your current one. While this is cool, I recommend just adding 1 more to your collection for yourself, and then using the “ST Pair” button to join them for true stereo sound! It is awesome!!! Thank you for choosing Sony! Erin

A:AnswerHi Damien, this speaker does not come with an AC Power Adaptor. The built-in battery of the speaker can be charged when connected to an AC outlet via the supplied USB Type-C cable and a USB AC adaptor (commercially available). The speaker supports USB AC adaptors that are capable of delivering an output current of 1.5 A. Thanks! -Jess
A:AnswerHi Dijo, thank you for your inquiry. This will work with your phone. The speaker also works with compatible BLUETOOTH Profiles:
A2DP (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile)
AVRCP (Audio Video Remote Control Profile)
HSP (Headset Profile)
HFP (Hands-free Profile)
Thanks for inquiring about the XB23.
The speaker supports USB type C charging cable. There should have been one in the box.
That cable can be connected to most USB AC adaptors that are capable of delivering an output current of 1.5 A.
We hope this helps,
A:AnswerHi Mulberry, Thanks for your inquiry! Yes, the XB23 will auto connect to the first Bluetooth signal it sees. The unit must be on in order to do this. You can turn “Auto Standby” mode off and leave the unit plugged in while you are out. The Party Connect function is terminated when the speaker is turned off and needs to establish the Party Connect function again to play in sync. I hope this helps. Regards, Erin
We appreciate your interest in the XB23. It comes only with a USB Cable and warranty card. We apologize, this unit doesn't feature an AUDIO IN jack. It is a Bluetooth only model.
If you want to play music, you can use your smartphone and connect it via Bluetooth connection.
You might want to consider getting the XB43, XB12, XB22, XB32, or the XB41 which do have 3.5mm in, but connecting an audio cable to this jack turns off sound output from the connected BLUETOOTH device. I hope this helps!
