I’ve used several of their line of these speakers. I still use my XB41 to this day, though I think the XB33 will take its place.
I wasn’t expecting too much of a difference but boy oh boy is there one. The addition of the side-firing “woofers” definitely brings more to the table than just have 2 speakers and 2 Tweeters to drive all the sound. The fact that this change was made, helps the Live Sound option to sound so much better than before. On my XB41 the Live muddled everything but the highs and those were way too bright so I stuck with using my own sound profile. Now though, that’s a different story because the low frequency response is handled by the woofers. Sound is no longer muddled and everything is boosted. It does sound like they adjusted the mid-range with the Live Sound profile as before it seemed as though it was completely missing.
All the typical features of the speaker are there though. You have your USB port to charge a device like on previous models. There is no aux this time which is a shame, but I think that takes away from the fact this is a Bluetooth speaker. The biggest change here though and it’s quite a shame it didn’t make it in to the last series with the style now being the standard in mobile devices and even laptops, is USB Type-C. This is such a huge welcome change as it means less need to have a certain style cable with you anymore. Now I’m not certain if it supports fast charging and can find no mention of it. If it does, then I’d imagine you’ll spend much less time waiting than you would the previous generations.
Another thing is that there is no DC charging anymore which is again very welcome. I can’t recall how many times I misplaced the charger for my XB41. Battery life is on par with previous models, though I never used it for that amount of time straight. I would keep my 41 in the bathroom so I could have music while in there or listen to a podcast and typically charge it every other month. It holds its battery over long term incredibly well. Even the little XB12 I have holds its charge for long amounts of time.
If you’re looking for a fantastic sounding Bluetooth speaker that’s waterproof that you can keep with you by the pool or in the yard or even out on the beach, I’d say you definitely can’t go wrong with this generation of the XB series.
Can’t wait to see what Sony cooks up next.
'Party-Time' is what Sony should have named this latest in the line of its Bluetooth speakers. Sony has built this unit with all of the most desirable features I could ever ask in a BT speaker. It is IP67, waterproof and dustproof rated, which allows me to use this FUN party machine outside around my pool and hot tub. WoW! It is also shock-resistant, and can take some bumps and falls too. It has a speakerphone function with voice assist, rustproof, completely washable, and can be used around salt water too. Add all these features with a downloadable, phone app, which let's me create dazzling light shows, DJ effects, and customized sound effects, too equals 'Party-Time'. WooHoo!
** SOUND QUALITY – This XB-33 delivers rich, robust, and resounding bass. It will take high volume levels without distortion. Since I use this speaker outside a lot I keep the sound level a little higher then moderate. It reproduces the mid-ranges with vibrant instruments and clear voice. For the size of this speaker the bass frequency is outstanding, low and dynamic. It features five sound modes: Clear Audio+, DSEE, LIVE SOUND, EXTRA BASS TM, and STAMINA MODE. STAMINA will give me the most battery life while using moderate volume levels. Clear Audio+ is what Sony recommends for the most simplest operation. EXTRA BASS is the highlight of this speaker and also my Grand Kids favorite sound setting. And, using the Sony Music App I can set the EQ for different genres of music to further heighten and customize the sound quality I want. My Grand Kids love this baby for its reverberating bass over all its numerous sound features. This speaker reproduces the BT music choices from my cell phone into near CD quality. My Grand Kids found out that the already deep bass can be further pronounced by placing this speaker in a corner. YIKES! For musical enjoyment around my pool and anywhere outside this XB-33 is my 'Go-To' choice.
** SOUND ENGINEERING - The Sony SRS-XB33 Portable BT Speaker has been totally redesigned to deliver live, breathing, extra bass. The Sony engineers built two side passive radiators on either end of this speaker to enhance the richness of the delivered bass output. This speaker sits front-facing at an slight angle to project the Live Sound as a three dimensional experience to my ears. Sony uses its own proprietary DSP chip (Digital Signal Processing) to intensify the listening area of the speaker and improve the width and depth of the projected sound. The Live Sound feature is what sets this BT speaker above all others. Another FUN feature is that this speaker can stand on its end, or even upside down. It has two non-slip, extended supports, on its bottom, which give this speaker the angle it needs to project Live Sound and keep it stable too. This XB-33 has the SBC, AAC, LDAC codecs, which reproduce sound the closet to that of CD quality.
** SONY MUSIC CENTER APP – This is a feature-packed app, which can be downloaded for Free from the Google Play or Apple Stores. Also included in this download is the Fiestable App. Together these two apps create the 'party' atmosphere, and make it so interactive. The Music Center App also allows me to access my personal Music Library (must give this app permission to access) like Pandora, Spotify, or Tune-In, etc. The Fiestable App is absolutely awesome. This app allows me to enable DJ Control by customizing my music genres using Isolator, Notch, Noise, and Jet. I can also add Drums, Scratch, Audience, Voice (Cool Sayings), Phaser, Reggaehorn, and Rhythm by simply tapping or using my finger swirling around on a circle on the pad of my Smartphone when I enable DJ Controls. My Grand Kids can make these effects in sync with both the music and lighting. Illumination Controls feature Party-Flash and Custom Color, which is unbelievable. Again, tapping or swirling my finger around on a circle on the pad of my Smartphone that appears when selecting this setting makes these fantastic party effects. My Grand Kids love to dance with their cell phones in hand and change the light show to the rhythm, beat, add DJ effects, or, anyway they choose using the Fiestable App. They do this with the Motion-Control by swinging their phones back and forth, side to side and pivoting them. It is absolutely fascinating to watch and see what effects they can do in sync with the music. I don't have the talent for this, but they make it look so easy and FUN to do. YooHoo!
** BATTERY LIFE – After fully charging this speaker I got a full 18 hours before I had to recharge it again. But, in fairness I play the volume above moderate levels. And, the illumination effects are only used when the Grand Kids come over at night for a dip in the pool, and to dance to the music on our deck. This speaker can be charged with the included USB Type-C cable. There is also a USB port for me to charge my cell phone or any other device. Using the lighting mode and effects along with EXTRA BASS decreases the available battery reserve.
** OTHER FEATURES – Hands free calling using my voice assistant, Siri, is an nice option, that I really do not use it. But, it is available, and I might use it on my upcoming fishing trip. At the back of the unit is a Party Connect button, which will allow up to 100 (Sony select models, compatible speakers) to be connected over Bluetooth. How cool is that? This speaker only weighs approximately two and half pounds, making it extremely portable. I am taking it along on my boat for my next fishing trip for entertainment. I only need to figure out what music I need to play to catch fish?
** CONCLUSION – I enjoy using this speaker outside by my pool the most. I highly recommend it. Since it is waterproof I have NO worries about it getting splashed on. My Grand Kids absolutely love it and all the FUN party features. And, I am so pleased watching them enjoy this party machine. This speaker would make a great gift to a young teen, family member, or friend, who enjoys spending time outdoors.
The Sony SRS-XB33 speaker is a great choice for a portable Bluetooth speaker. The XB-33 has great full-range sound and cool lighting that you can customize by downloading the Sony Music Center app and the Fiestable app. I like that you can add the apps of your choice into the Sony Music Center app so all of your entertainment apps are right there in one place. The XB-33 has passive radiators built into each end of the speaker to give you that extra Bass punch. It has a USB-C charging port which is the latest tech and is what new phones use. Additionally, it has a USB-A out port so you can charge your phone, headphones or other devices with it. The Sony SRS XB-33 has great range and a lot of clarity especially with the LDAC high-quality wireless Bluetooth feature turned on under Bluetooth settings on your device. I have found it sounds best to me with the live feature turned off. Furthermore, you can connect up to 100 more Bluetooth speakers together to play simultaneously. I am very impressed with the sound quality of this speaker and it is a great choice for outdoor use whether you are by the pool or out in a boat the IP67 water rating will keep it going without issue if it gets wet. I would not hesitate to recommend this speaker to anyone looking for one in this size range. With all of the Bluetooth speakers out there these days choosing one can be difficult. For the price of this speaker, it is a great choice that I feel anyone would be happy with!
This Sony SRS-XB33 is an excellent portable speaker with an outstanding sound, and cool lighting feature. The speaker is just a little bigger than its predecessor XB32 and weights little over 2 pounds. When carrying you definitely will not feel the weight. The built quality is excellent, on the corners where the bass drivers are it is made of plastic. Surrounding the rest of the speaker it has cloth mesh that feels soft on the hands. On the top are the control buttons and on the back there is a rubber cap that covers other several buttons, and USB ports. Connecting the speaker with my smartphone via Bluetooth was a breeze, you can also connect it using the NFC by placing your phone on top of the NFC logo.
I was quite impressed with the sound quality, it was very well balanced and the voices are heard clearly especially with the Live Mode on. The bass was pretty good, nothing out of this word but for the size of the speaker it kicks pretty well. One thing I noticed the further you are from the speakers you hear less of that dep bass. Volume wise this thing can get pretty loud that impressed me as well. if you really want to get the best sound out of this speaker is all about placement. If you put it in a corner where the sound can bounce off walls you will be impressed how great it sounds and how loud this thing can be. This speaker not only sounds great but also supports Sony’s LDAC “ high quality wireless listening”.
The speaker comes with several features like Stereo Pair you get stereo sound when paired with another XB33. With Party connect you can connect up to 100 sony speakers. I tried to use the party connect feature with an XB32 and MHC-V71 but it didn’t work. I tried using the pair button on the back and the Music app and nothing. This feature did not work right out the box hopefully they enable it with a future update because this feature is awesome. The speaker has multi color lights, which can be turned on and off, they look pretty cool in the dark. Using the Fiestable app you can control the light colors and make Dj sounds.
This speaker battery power is rated to last 24 hours. I am pretty confident it will because after 3 straight hours of listening the battery was still at 100%. This is very relieving to know that you don’t have to worry about charging it while at an extended party, gathering or just hanging out. If you are worried about your cell phone or other battery powered accessory running low on juice, no problem just plug it to this speaker it will act as a charging device. Be advised that, doing that it will deplete the speaker battery power. I do like the fact they finally added USBC to charge the speaker which finally I can use my phone charging cable.
Overall is an excellent product with great built quality, outstanding sound and IP67 waterproof, I would definitely recommend it. In the box it comes with the speaker, manual and USBC cable, unfortunately it does not include a power brick but you can use the one from your phone.
I’ve had the pleasure of listening to music and movies with the Sony SRS-XB33 speaker for the last 48 hours and I am pretty impressed with it. It is a little bigger than I was expecting it to be, but it is still very portable. The speaker has little rubber feet on the bottom that keep the speaker from sliding or vibrating too much off smooth surfaces. Build quality is very strong and sturdy. It feels like it would definitely survive multiple drops. It is splash proof and dust proof, I feel confident that I would be able to take this to the beach , leave out in the back yard while grilling and keep it poolside without worrying about dust , dirt or water damaging the speaker. It charges with a USB-C cable and charged to full in just a couple of hours. Sony doesn’t provide a charging brick but you can plug in the cable to any USB port or plug you might already own. The speaker has a built in usb charging port that will charge your phone! Very neat and convenient feature. The one thing it is missing though is an aux port. So you will only be able to connect the speaker with Bluetooth capable devices. I’ve been using the speaker to listen to music while out in the yard and on the patio. The speaker gets very loud and has good thumping bass. The free downloadable app will let you control the EQ and party lights on the speaker. The lights sync and flash / strobe with the music. You can turn them off if they bother you. I connected the speaker to my projector via Bluetooth, and the movies I watched sounded great through this speaker. I watched about 6 hours worth of movies and shows with this speaker on and the battery held up like a champ. I still haven’t needed to charge it after two days of use. Would I recommend this to a friend? Definitely. Every genre of music I streamed through the speaker sounded great. I am definitely taking this speaker everywhere with me.
Pros: Great sound quality
Long battery life
Rugged build quality
Party lights provide cool ambience, and can be tweaked to your liking within the free app.
Cons : No Auxiliary port.
I can see why Sony is an alternative to JBL and Bose, less expensive and the sound is great, this one in particular got my attention at the store and I have the opportunity to tested in a trip to the beach, I am really pleased to say that the battery is great, last forever, and the sound is very clear, is built very strong and the lights are super nice. I will recommend everyone to have one for small party's with the family and friends.
Sony has been killin' it lately in the premium audio products sector. I own multiple styles of their latest headphones and love them all. This is my first Sony bluetooth speaker and it continues the trend.
The XB33 is on the smaller side so it is very portable, but it puts out big sound. Its got 3 sound modes, Extra Bass, Live, and Stamina for long playing. To me the Extra Bass mode sounds best and it definitely delivers the bass for a smallish audio device. Another thing I like about it is when you press the 'on' button it turns on immediately, no delay in waiting for the speaker to power up. And connecting to your bluetooth device takes literally 2 seconds, its very fast. Sony advertises that it is waterproof, dustproof and shockproof so it will stand up to the elements when outside. They also say the battery will last up to 24 hours with the lights turned off, but I always have them on because it looks awesome. The light show syncs with the music, its constantly changing colors, and it is a lot of fun to watch. I love this speaker, tons of fun and sounds fantastic!
A simple, portable speaker that will bring the life out of any atmosphere. Whether you are on a date, at the beach, or smoking a cigar outside with your friends.
It will boost the activity in any situation and bring clear, clarity, and bass with any artist you are playing through your Bluetooth device.
I highly recommend this speaker.

Thanks for reaching out and for your interest in Sony! We apologize, stereo pair function will only work with 2 SRS-XB33 speakers or 2 SRS-XB32 speakers. Using one of each models will not be compatible.
I hope this helps!
Thank you so much for your inquiry. Yes, the XB33 supports the following Bluetooth profiles for Amazon Echo Dot Bluetooth pairing.
Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP)
Audio/Video Remote Control Profile (AVRCP)
You will need to connect it through the Alexa app on your phone. The speaker will then play the audio for the Dot.
I hope this helps!
Thanks for your interest in Sony’s XB33! Unfortunately we do not disclose decibels however the XB33 features EXTRA BASS for a deep, punchy sound.
