Sony - typical issues, but not bad overall
|Posted .There's a lot of negative about the 'runway' look of the backlit keyboard. I don't find this to be distracting. And if it is, I change my angle of viewing slightly. The vents that are open only when the laptop is open... I think are a nice touch. Less cat hair gets stuck in there. And really, it's not that much 'louder' than my 10 year old HP laptop was. The thing I hate the most... is Win 8. No Media Center... so have to 'pay more' for something I should have had all along. I mean, really? Gobs of room on the 1 TB drive... okay video card. I bought this for the 2 GB dedicated ram on an NVidia graphics card... but have not yet tested the application that needs it. I'm too busy tracking down and de-installing all the junk loaded up on the laptop. Have not tried all the Sony movie, sound, etc. editing applications yet. Again, no time to do so... but they look to be the equiv. of at least stock HP stuff and garageband. Processor speed is a little slow: the i7 chip in this is a little underpowered but still acceptable. Just be careful, depending on your needs there might be better chipsets to be had. That said, the transfer of files from my back up drive to this...was lightning fast - even with the 'slow' USB connection. Very few ports on the unit: and only one HDMI out (no VGA or any other vid out). Note that if you are hooking up to an older projector using VGA - you will need an adapter/converter. AND if you want sound... but have an HDMI projector... remember that the headphone audio out jack on the laptop is disabled when the HDMI port is active with an HDMI connection (cause HDMI is both Audio and Video of course). My old projector has an HDMI port... but I can't get sound to the soundboard from the projector... SO I have to convert the Video to VGA for the projector and run a cable from my headphone out jack on the laptop to get sound. That's all pretty standard... but if you don't know that ahead of time... life can get a little interesting for you. Battery life is a surprisingly long 4+ hours, even pushing video. Best Buy customer service was okay... knowledge of the associates for higher end needs was sketchy... and the website doesn't allow you to search in stock merch at a store. But that has nothing to do with the Sony Vaio. Overall, I would buy it again... but if I could have... I'd have bought it with Win7Pro.

Great system, frustrating set-up
|Posted .So, I bought this laptop because of the technical specs - it has a decent video card, plenty of ram, and ample hard drive space. Mostly, I needed good, fast, video for the work that I do. I was not especially interested in the fact that it had a touch screen, even though I know that this is one of the latest developments in technology, or the windows 8 operating system (which I don't especially like, but I can tolerate). I was, however, expecting to be able to use the computer fully, as is, without having to rely on the touch screen. I run complex photo and video editing programs, which do not lend themselves well to touch screen operation. However, one of the MAJOR drawbacks of this machine, that I somehow failed to notice in the store, is that it lacks mouse buttons. entirely. You can click on something by using the touch pad, but you can't right click, nor can you click and drag something, without reaching up and doing it using the touch screen. This was incredibly frustrating for me, and meant that one of the first things I had to do was go out and find an external mouse to use with this computer. My second frustration was lack of a microphone jack. I got around this by borrowing a friends mic that is usb enabled, but it still required me seeking out a solution right off the bat. Yes, I probably should have looked for these things before purchasing the computer, but honestly, this was the best machine within my price range for what I needed to do. The pros - it's fast, I haven't had any trouble running different programs, it's got great display and sound, decent batter life, and it's fairly lightweight. So what I bought it for - the tech specs - are great. The rest? I am frustrated by the desire to turn laptops into phones. I don't run apps on my computer, I run programs. The windows 8 interface and the touch screen are not at all useful to my work. I can get around it, but it's certainly not a feature for me.

Overall a very great, solid computer (College use)
|Posted .This computer is a high resolution screen, so it will look crisp and clear. Along with the nice screen comes an i7 processor running at 2.7 Ghz which allows it to run fast. 12gb of ram along with 2gb of dedicated graphics, couldn't ask for better memory at this price. The only ;troubles I have experienced from the month that I have used it is this: A simple click on a file, tab, window, anything, can be mistaken for me dragging it. I have used plenty of laptops in my days and never had this problem. But it may be just me still. Overall great bang for your buck and a great computer to last years.

A Man's review: Fast but has some issues
Posted .I'm a control Systems Engr, and also managed an Elec/Instr shop for 12 yrs. I'm not new to laptops, and have quite a bit of experience with using all sorts of programs and laptops. I bought this laptop when the service dept finally got around to junking out my previous laptop ( which was an ASUS G73JH 17" Screen#. 1st to discuss Best Buy's Great ADH policy - I always buy my Laptops from Best Buy because of their great warranty service. They are way ahead of the competitors on this aspect IMO. This is what happened to me on my old laptop. On that old laptop...it took 2 motherboard changes, 1 ram change, and then a power supply problem for the GEEKs to finally decide to junk it out. So I got this laptop #and made sure to get the 3yr ADH #for $500 !!!!#. This is not the 1st time getting the ADH has paid off for me. What was nice, was they actually gave me "In Store" credit #because their computer search system couldn't find a laptop with equivalent functionality to my junked out laptop#. So I got the full price back that I paid for it, and my 3 yr ADH only had about 2 weeks left before it expired. Sweet. The ADH paid off on that one. For the SONY VAIO, I've had it for 1 month now, and have all my software installed. Pros: Boots super fast, and runs super cool. The new 8GP solid state hard drive must be the key. I can't see any fan vents on the laptop.whih is just amazing, that the CPU, and the onboard Graphics card stays so cool. Amazing to say the least. Also it's incredibly light, and wafer thin. Great for airports & travelling. 5 Hrs battery life - there are laptops with longer battery life, but I rarely need much more battery life longer than that. It also has a nice 2GB dedicated on board Graphics card #which is not part of the motherboard#. This is the 1st laptop I've had which is Bluetooth enabled, and it's kind of handy to be able to access internet through a cell phone when I'm out in the boonies. Very cool. The sound is acceptable for those of you who don't like to use headphones or earclips etc. CONS: There are two USB 3.0 Ports, and one USB 2.0. Port. I have a Logitech Wireless M510 mouse, and logically you've want to plug in the mouse to the slower USB port #freeing up the faster USB 3.0 ports for USB drives, etc#. Well the problem is that dang USB 2.0 port messes up, and the mouse stops working right, and the only way I've found to get it fixed is to A# unplug the Logitech wireless USB from the USB 2 port, B) Plug it in to a USB 3 port #which cures the mouse#, and then C) Plug it back into the USB 2 port again, and the Mouse works ok until the next time it messes up. This has happened more than once and I've only had it one month. Hmmmm.... Other CONS are related to the WINDOWS 8 software, which is so riddled with glitches, and is so confusing, I feel like I've been swindled by Microsoft. Problems that arise here are software freezing up, no easy way to close out of programs, no "START" program. It's like they purposely designed it to be completely confusing, and crash. But that's not the Laptop's problem.... except that SONY likely will have to update patches for the Laptop & drivers to work out these glitches with WIN8. Also don't like the Touch screen. It seems illogical to me to try and turn a laptop into an android. For example, when working in Excell, and tying a formula into 1 cell, but my big guy hands accidentally brushes the touch screen, which moves what I'm typing into another cell! And if you weren't paying attention, you've totally messed up your file. Arrrrggghh. I ended up turning off the stoopid touch screen. IF I'D WANTED AN ANDROID I WOULD HAVE BOUGHT ONE. Sony decided to take the right/left click buttons off of the mouse touch pad, and the functions are still there, it's just that there's one big square on the touch pad, making it hard to tell by feel if your on the right/left click point locations. It takes a little getting used to - I don't like it, but can live with it. SOFTWARE: There's some pretty nice SONY software for recording music, videos, burning DVD's #including Blueray# which is sweet. It also comes with 1 yr license WEBROOT Secure anywhere. I usually hadn't used the security software that came with PC's I've purchased, since we get NORTON free from Comcast. HOWEVER... Norton is got to be the most irritating Security software I have ever encountered, and so I decided to use the Webroot this time. So far I like it pretty well. No getting inundated with stupid meaningless messages from that stinky NORTON. So... the WEBROOT is sweet IMO. The only reason I didn't give it a full 5 stars was because of the USB issues, and Sony apparently needs to add some driver patches to make the laptop work better with WIN8. Pretty typical glitches though IMO. It's a good laptop, and I'd recommend it if you can afford it. Fortunately for me, they had an open box laptop in the store which gave me about $160 off the purchase price.

Great Overall Computer
Posted .I ordered this laptop from Sony to replace my Hp to get the silver version of this laptop, not only does it look better but I have also noticed that it does not show finger prints as much as people were saying this computer does. Performance: This computer with these specs will easily be enough to get a person through everyday tasks and heavier loads. Although, I have not played any games on big platforms such as Battlefield 3, im sure it would perform moderately well on medium settings. Download speed is fast on this computer. Also not sure if its my house/router or what but my Mother's 400 dollar laptop gets one bar higher on her wireless reception basically anywhere in my house. I don't know if this is because of a poor engineering decision on the type of antenna to use in the laptop or not. I will update the review when I know after I call Sony. Display: The display on this computer is top of the line (well straight on at least#. When turning the laptop screen sideways the screen seems to far well and also as you pull the screen towards you. If you tilt it back almost immediately the color washes away #Makes sense why the screen is only able to go so far back). Sound: Overall the sound performs well, with hip hop or something with lots of bass, it is basically no existent with all you getting is a tapping noise, so if you need bass do not get this computer get the fit E. The speakers easily fill a room. Fan Noise: The Fan Noise is not apparent at all when performing basic tasks like surfing the web, Microsoft Office, and sometimes just watching a movie. But when performing more rigorous tasks it is audible, but not too loud for a library. Overall, fan noise is not a problem. Design: The design is actually ingenious. The fan is not noticeable at all on the computer because with the speakers it fits between the screen and the keyboard pushing the air away from you. Overall, typing feels nice on it, but reviews said key travel was bad but I don't notice it to bad. The Trackpad feels finicky at times but is GENEROUSLY sized. The computer is actually quite slim for not being an ultrabook, but it does feel a little heavy....almost six pounds weight. Overall, the computer looks amazing cause it is one of the things sony seriously thinks about when engineering these laptops. Battery Life: Video Playback: 3hr 15minutes Surfing Web: 4hr 30min Battery life is not the greatest with this laptop, I would maybe consider waiting for haswell to be installed in this computer to give it a hour or two more of battery life if you need it that bad. I would definitely recommend this laptop. I actually ordered the T series laptop from Sony first and this computer seems a lot like it, this computer mainly fixing issues with the T series such as fan noise and horrible webcam

Good but overpriced
|Posted .Bearing in mind my last two laptops (both HP) cost a third of the price I am not seeing a huge difference in performance. My biggest issue is the trackpad which is very difficult to use for things like drag and drop. The laptop also gets noisy when doing more intensive tasks and this is partly due to the venting being in front of the screen rather than the rear or side. The wifi has also been intermittent at times when my older HP laptop is fine. Sony updates have not helped but it's so intermittent that I have not contacted Sony support as yet. Lastly, the DVD drive ejection button is far too sensitive. I am accidentally ejecting it all the time when picking up the laptop. Other than those minor annoyances it is a decent product. The keyboard is good, the touchscreen works well, sound is excellent and the laptop performs well although I was getting almost equal performance from my 18 month old HP Win 7 laptop with 8GB Ram and dual core AMD processor. (I use my laptops for work as an IT consultant and occasional 3d gaming). The laptop does boot/reboot very quickly (presumably due to the solid state drive).

Good speed, touch screen takes getting used to.
|Posted .Pretty good machine, runs cool and gets work done quickly. Starts reliably and boots quickly. Screen is amply sized and weight is very good. Thin profile makes it easy to stash. Some learning curve working w/Windows 8. Comes loaded with a 30 day virus software but clerk recommended another. I would have waited on the secondary purchase had I known. It's easy to "fat finger" the links if using a smaller font and you're picking from a menu list...mildly frustrating. The number keypad is on the right side (set up similarly to a desktop keyboard) puts the main keys to left of center...another mild learning curve issue.

Great Laptop with a few quirks
Posted .This is a great machine overall. It performs well and the screen is beautiful. The touchscreen is very accurate and responsive. Also the battery life doesn't seem as bad as some third party reviews suggested. The backlit keyboard is nice, but the touch pad isn't centered and doesn't always respond to taps. The fans are incredibly loud and the cd tray is way too easy to pop open. It's the single most annoying thing about this computer. Every time I pick it up or stick it in a case I hit the button on the tray and it ejects. It would have been nice if they had chosen a slot loading dvd drive. The display could tilt back a little further, but that's minimal. I would consider this a top notch laptop, worth showing off to your friends, but it does have a few annoyances,

Is it possible in general to replace a Intel processor with a newer one, like 3rd gen to the 4th gen? One last thing, can the RAM be expanded to 16GB? Would this be one of the best Touch screen, Gaming laptops out there. I want a laptop great for gaming, but also touch screen compatible, unless I can put in a touch screen.
