A Fresh Take on Wireless Speakers

I've owned more than a few portable wireless speakers throughout the years, but this one is truly unique. You can count on it to deliver excellent sound quality and a splash of fun wherever your adventures take you. That being said, this speaker maintains a few drawbacks that plague most wireless speakers available today. PROS: - Truly excellent sound quality - probably some of the best I've heard from a wireless, battery-enabled speaker. Enabling the EXTRA BASS option puts the speaker above the competition, delivering deep, full sounds with clear and crisp vocals. You'd be hard-pressed to find a portable speaker with better sound quality in this price range. - Very portable: it's lightweight yet feels very sturdy and substantial. It will easily survive a weekend trip in a duffle bag. - Colored lights and strobe: you can create your own mini night club. The lights pulse and change based on the beat of the song. You won't want to look away. - A USB port is included on the back of the speaker so you can charge your phone while on the go. - Water resistant: I used the speaker by my pool over the weekend. It didn't get wet, but it's nice having the peace-of-mind knowing that it can withstand a few splashes. - Battery life: Sony claims up to 24 hours of battery life. I can't confirm that, but I used the speaker for more than 12 hours last weekend without having to recharge it. Needless to say, I'm not worried about battery life. SEEMS COOL, BUT COULDN'T TEST: - Wireless Party Chain: Sony says you can connect and synchronize up to 10 of these speakers via Bluetooth to create a massive light and music show. I would have loved to try this, but I don't have access to 10 XB40 speakers. CONS: - Bluetooth is the only option for wireless connectivity. It works fine, but there are obvious limitations. If your phone rings, you'll have to disable Bluetooth if you want to take the call. All of your phone alert sounds will go through the speaker when connected via Bluetooth. - The lights on the speaker are cool, but if you want to turn them off, the only way appears to be through the app on your phone. I wish Sony would have included a button on the speaker to control the lights. - Speaking of apps, the ones used to control this speaker (SongPal and Fiestable) are extremely basic (at least on iPhone). It took me a while to finally learn how to control the light effects. Hopefully Sony improves the iPhone apps in future updates. Overall, this is a solid wireless speaker from Sony that is sure to spark conversation and bring fun to any situation. A few small refinements from Sony would have really put this speaker over the top, but the light effects alone make this speaker a solid contender in the crowded wireless speaker market. Recommended!

The Sony SRS-XB40 has been the speaker my teenage kids have been fighting over since I received it. The sound on it is surprisingly loud and clear with rich sounding bass. With quick connection using NFC on my Android phone I was up and running in no time flat. This thing is like a little party box with the various light features and the ability to link multiple speakers together. I envision walking in with my family of 4, each carrying a speaker, setting them around and starting a party wherever we are. Price is the limiting factor on that though. The lights are entertaining and the only way to truly control them is through one of two apps advertised in the material that is in the package, Music Center and Fiestable, which Fiestable now appears only inside Music Center. You can turn the lights on and off by holding the Extra Bass button on the speaker itself, but by default it is in “Rave” mode. Through the Settings menu of the Music Center app you can find an EQ, power options and illumination. The lighting mode then can be changed off through 12 other settings, with some preset color modes. However, you can also play with the lights through Illumination in Fiestable, which only allows color changing and blinking rate of the color while you hold it. Also strangely is that if you set a color, then go back to settings and choose a color mode, it will continue to hold your set color instead of changing to “Calm Lime” per se. The DJ Control is interesting in the Fiestable app as well. It modifies the sound and plays sound effects from the speaker, no matter the source. It gives you a feel that you are a “real DJ”, for a moment, till you realize how annoying it can get. It feels sturdy and heavy enough to sit on a ledge by the pool without a beach ball knocking it off. Plus it is splash resistant and shouldn’t have any issues from the water of weather. It does have a rubber seal on the panel where USB, power, the charging cable and a reset button are and it is not meant to open in case of getting wet. The buttons all appear to be sealed with the rubber that wraps the entire speaker which also makes me wonder, why is there no skip button on there? Overall, it is a fun speaker and that is why my teenage kids love it. I just wish I had better control over the lights and didn’t have to go to an app within an app to make changes in two different places.

    Great Bluetooth Speaker

Just to preface, I've never owned a bluetooth speaker, so my thoughts on this could be seen as biased. Firstly, this is not small, this is a pretty good size speaker, it's roughly a foot wide, about 4 inches tall and about 4 deep. So with it being a fairly large speaker that means that the speakers themselves aren't tiny and tinny sounding. Secondly, the biggest benefit to this speaker is that you can add a second, and it doesn't have to be the same model. Although I imagine in doing so you will end up with an imbalance of sound. The biggest issue with this though is cost. I don't imagine too many will be willing to shell out $500 for a pair of these speakers. So, as for quality of the speaker itself, the sound is pretty good. I've used it paired to my phone, my tablet, and my Vizio TV. It's really nice too in that it has an app you can download to connect to it to control the audio from whatever source you have it connected to. I noticed thought that when you do this, you need to connect the app first otherwise the BT will override the source it's initially connected to and stop audio/playback. Audio wise, I've listened to a variety of music and it's handled it all very well. It's not an exact accurate reproduction of the soundscape though. If the Extra Bass option is off it reverts to a flat eq, this can be adjusted from within the app thankfully. With it on flat it leaves something to be desired, but playing around with the EQ or even just turning on the Xtra Bass mode adds a lot of life and depth to the sound. Spending time with it can really transform the basic sound from it. It does get plenty loud too. The bass can get a bit muddled when the sound gets loud though. Some other pros of it I appreciate of this speaker is the fact that it's water resistant. The panel on the back that seals closed has a Aux port, USB to charge a device and the charging port. It seems to hold a charge for a good long while. The lights on it are to me, gimmicky, but to some it could be a welcome thing. I do wish that it was a bit better tuned to the audio coming through. It does pick up the pace when the playback get's busy, but for example, the strobe setting is just not very effective. Overall though, if you got the money to spend, for $250 this would be a good option. Again though, at $500 for a pair, that's a stretch. You might be better off going with some of the X20-30 models and then just pairing a bunch together. I believe you can have a maximum of 4 all in sync which is nice.

Fun option in crowded bluetooth market

After using this a few days I have the below opinions/info to pass on; I was a little surprised how small it is. But it is heavy. which I think speaks to having good speaker magnets. From a sound standpoint I would rate it above average. If bass is your thing, the Maga Bass is a nice option, but for me I found that it kind of muddled up the sound. There are buttons on the top of the speaker that you can use to control the attached device (such as moving forward/back thru your playlist), turning lights on/off, volume, but to do some functions you have to know the "combination" to use (multiple taps on certain buttons). I found this somewhat confusing initially and would suggest just using your device to scroll thru music, etc. You can download Sony’s app for added control. I did download it and as stated in other reviews I dont think the average person would use it much. It does let you change the light effects, which is nice to amaze and astound your friends and small children. Or if you have multiple speakers it may come in handy to synch them all up. It also has an EQ option but most music apps do as well, but I didnt play with it. I have an android LG4 which was easily synched using bluetooth. Once synched I just used my favorite local music app and it worked fine. I was able to control it from my phone from at least 50 feet away thru 3 walls, which was nice. Lets face it - the lighting is just cool, BUT it is nice to be able to turn it off so easily - everything in moderation. I have an 18 month old grandson and if he was writing this review it would be rated a 5 no question about it. He is amazed with the lights to state it midly. On the back there is a "port cover" under which you will find a USB attachment you can use to keep your device charged. An external input using I believe 3.5 mm (1/8 inch) jack - so you could use your old non-bluetooth devices - I used it with an old apple ipod and it worked fine. There is also the plug to charge the device as well as a reset button.. Overall I would definitely recommend this speaker. It is supposed to be water resistant, is portable, is very loud when both speaker and device are turned up full blast, is supposed to play 24 hours on a charge (I only tried 5 hours and it was still going strong) and last but certainly not least - there is the lighting!

These are party ready speakers! Huge sound that doesn't distort and I put these up loud. The lighting features are fun and move to the music letting you create a club scene in your living room. Seriously - add a smoke machine and you just setup a club. You can turn the lights off or change their colors with the app. Tried all kinds of different music through them and it doesn't disappoint. Good bass (enhanced with XB - "extra bass" mode), highs, lows, and mid all sound good. Put on a live song and it sounded like they were playing in my living room. Haven't played it for more than a few hours, but still going strong and claims a 24 battery life, so could see this being a great must have for a weekend at the beach, camping, etc. without needing a charge. The Fiestable app is pretty cool - it gives you a ton of DJ-esk features like drums, horns, voice, and other effects that alter the song while playing (like soloing out the bass track, vocal track, etc.) - Not sure how it does it, but it was fun to play with. I only have one, but I could see how the linking feature would be cool setup 2 to 4 of these together and then just drop them in the corners of your room and party on. Up to 10 can be linked so you could drop these thoughout the whole house. The XB40 is has some weight to it, but that's easily justified with it's huge loud sound and 24 battery capabilities. Definitely recommend.

Very Solid, Fun and Versatile Speaker

The Sony XB40 speaker is a very solid and well built speaker. It is easy to use and is fun for the whole family. The sound is really good but not fantastic, however, all of the other features make it worth the money. For example, there are mini strobe lights and LEDs that change colors and flash with the music. Also, the whole unit is water resistant (in case you leave it out in the rain or use near a pool). Here are some of the pros and cons as I see them, but remember that one person's pro may be another's con. Pros: The speaker is well built, has good sound, is easy to hookup, is water resistant, it creates a cool party atmosphere with the lights, and it can be hooked up to more speakers to fill a room. The speaker is sturdy and has plenty of volume to fill a room (inside or outside#. Importantly, the battery life is estimated to be up to 24 hours, which is 2-3 times what I've seen in other Bluetooth speakers #I have 3 others). One more pro is that the technology is easy to use. Some speakers have trouble connecting to many devices but this one connected very quickly and to several different devices. The speaker also has a bass boost function. I couldn't tell if it sounded better or worse with the bass boost, but then again I was just playing pop music. Either way, the function is nice to have. Cons: There are only 2 cons to this speaker, and they are not very negative. First, the sound is not as refined as I would like it. Its hard to describe but you know what awesome sound quality is when your face is in front of a speaker. Don't get me wrong, this speaker has really good sound but not quite the quality of a true high end speaker. The second con is the overall size of the speaker. It is larger and heavier than most of the other speakers I've used. However, the extra size is why it has the cool light show and the extra long battery life, so it is a tradeoff that I think is worth it. Overall, I would recommend this speaker to almost anyone, but if you are looking at tradeoffs between sound quality and functionality, this speaker leans toward functionality.

After a full day of use, I am loving this speaker! First, off the cool factor is there. I got the version in a dark blue, it almost looks purple. When you turn it on first sync your music. The light show is pretty entertaining and if you have any toddlers around the house they will stare at it for hours. The product comes in your typical Sony boxing which is rather cheap and unappealing. There is nothing special about the unboxing experience and you will just find the speaker, a charging cable and some documentation in the box. No frills here. I synced up the device with my Android Phone using NFC and with a tap, it was ready to go. The documentation recommends you download the ones of Sony’s apps for added control. I downloaded it and feel for the average person it will be pretty useless. If you own multiple speakers and want to control the tethering it comes in handy and if you want to mess with the EQ settings and light features a little more in depth it gives you a few more options. Sound quality is great overall. I compared it to some other speakers and the mids seemed a bit lacking with lots of emphasis on Mega Bass. If you are in a large room this sounds great but in my bedroom it just seemed like too much. I did not like the sound when I turned Mega Bass off as it seemed too muffled. As stated earlier, there are EQ settings in the app but I did not see any drastic difference after messing with that. This speaker seems tuned to carry sound in larger rooms and open air settings which I feel it excels at (pool party!!!). The device is also water resistant to rain and splashes (not waterproof so don't drop it in a pool). Again, this speaker appears designed to be used outdoors and it is light enough to carry around. The box says it can do 24 hours of music. This was difficult to test but I did play it in my office the entire day without charging and it ran strong the entire time over a 10 hour shift. There is also a USB attachment on the back under a flap so you can charge your devices. Also, you can turn off the lights if you find them annoying or they do not fit the setting. If you have a use for an outdoor speaker a large room, and want something durable and exciting with blinking lights to start conversations and have some fun, this speaker is great. I plan on using this quite a bit and would love to take it on trips. A great buy overall!

The Sony XB40 definitely has lived up to the billing for me. It is relatively portable speaker that provides great sound on a long battery life with light weather resistance. While the mid tones can become a bit washed out at higher volumes and it is certainly not the lightest of speakers, I highly recommend against any of it's competitors. Features - While the lights seemed kitchy to me at first, I have actually grown to like them. Now I caveat this with the fact that downloading the app to take control of the lights is a must unless you want a constant rave fest (no judgement here, just not my thing). The app also allows for EQ control, which is nice. The speaker itself also has the ability to pair with others. Although I have not tried that myself. I imagine that it would provide a nice whole-home audio experience. Build - The speaker overall feels solidly built. Now most will likely read that as heavy which, in fact, isn't completely wrong. The speaker itself is not something you would want to tote around in your had. under your arm all day long, but I would doubt you would notice it if you threw it in a bag to go to the beach or camping. While I didn't personally try out the weather resistance, it is a nice touch a long with the claim of 24 hr music playback battery life that I have yet to test. The speaker also has ports for a traditional 3.5 mm headphone jack and a usb port to charge your device which is a nice touch. Sound - This speaker will easily fill a large room with good, even sound. The mid tones do tend to be a bit washed out at louder volumes, but I appreciated the "XB" in most instances.
