    The Spaceman Deals an Ace

Man oh man oh man. What a terrifically fun, listenable, brilliant album this is! The Space Ace returns in top form on what is his best solo release ever. He's raw and honest about his wild, partying, substance-abuse laden past. And yet, he is more than up to the challenge of reclaiming his throne as the king supreme of rock guitarists; actually, it's not so much a challenge as it is his birthright. In this both hard-rocking and, yes, introspective collection of tunes, Frehley seems to be having the time of his life. His relatively new-founded sober lust for life comes through whether he's invading space, wants to hold you, is "Inside the Vortex," or giving every girl what she wants. Ace is simultaneously the Space Man we've always known and loved while being a renaissance man. He's proven he doesn't need the megalomaniacal Gene and Paul to succeed; in fact, he's better off without them.

Ace Frehley is back with Space Invader. This may be the most consistent album Ace has ever released. The opening track Space Invader brings back memories of Ace's 1978 solo album. Several tracks have that 70s Ace/Kiss sound while others sound more like his Frehely's Comet releases from the 80s. The album is full of guitar solos, but they don't always appear where you expect them. Gimmie a Feelin', Change, Inside the Vortex, What Every Girl Wants, and Past the Milky Way are my favorites. I could have done without the cover of Steve MIller's The Joker. I may leave it off when I import the album to iTunes.

I have been a fan of Kiss since the 1970's. The ORIGINAL band that is. And Ace was Kiss to me. His guitar playing is what made that band special. Here we have Ace's second album of the 21st century and he is still the same old character, and NO, that is not an insult. His guitar playing is still smoking and his voice sounds stronger than ever! Sure, there's a lot of cheesy lyrics and silly jokes throughout but that has always been the case with an Ace record. If you love him, you will love this record. And that's all you need to know!

Space Invader definitely lives up to all the positive reviews and hype it has received. From start to finish, it is classic Ace and KISS with a little twist. I haven't removed it from my car stereo since the day I got it. If you are an Ace fan, don't hesitate to buy this. It reminds me of his earlier stuff, but even better. Amazing guitar work, decent songwriting and great hooks abound.

Another great job by Ace. If you liked Anomoly, then you'll most likely love Space Invader. The whole cd is harder rock with great riffs and vocals. Cover of The Joker (Steve Miller Band) has gotten some mixed reviews but Ace put his spin on it and I like it a lot. Very modern and heavier. Deluxe version also has two extended versions and different cover art.

Space Ace produces another entertaining record. It's not his best work, but it has some great moments on it. Spaced Invaders has some good hooks and there are some rockin' solos, but it also has a few weak moments. Overall it's a fun ride.
